Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

No full textTese de doutoramento, Filosofia (Filosofia em Portugal), Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Letras, 2015Surgindo muito cedo na escrita filosófica do adolescente Pessoa e caraterizando uma parte da produção filosófica do autor fictício António Mora, a temática árabe-islâmica foi também abordada por Pessoa ortónimo, durante a idade adulta, em vários momentos e áreas do seu pensamento e da sua obra, nomeadamente nos escritos sobre sensacionismo, neopaganismo, iberismo, heteronimismo, sebastianismo e Quinto Império, assim como na poesia ortónima Historicamente pouco considerada no âmbito dos estudos pessoanos, ou então reduzida unicamente à figura de Omar Khayyam, a presença do Islão e da civilização islâmica revela-se pelo contrário um elemento penetrante e funcional do pensamento pessoano, particularmente nas vertentes culturais e civilizacionais do mesmo. Pessoa refletiu e escreveu acerca do Islão, da filosofia islâmica, da cultura científica na civilização islâmica, das literaturas árabe e persa, das mentalidades e culturas dos povos islâmicos, da presença islâmica na Península Ibérica medieval bem como na história e nos mitos portugueses, da presença árabe-islâmica no seu próprio pensamento e na sua obra enquanto intelectual português e europeu. Existem no espólio e na biblioteca particular de Pessoa dezenas de documentos e escritos autógrafos, alguns dos quais publicados aqui pela primeira vez juntamente com outros reeditados, relativos ao Islão e à civilização islâmica. A presente dissertação, visando analisar da forma mais completa e pela primeira vez a presença árabe-islâmica em Pessoa, pretende assim ser um estudo que investigue um tema original do pensamento do escritor português.An early element of the young Pessoa’s philosophical writings, the Arabic-Islamic theme structures part of the fictitious author António Mora’s philosophical writing, and is also an overlapping theme of the adult age Pessoa’s thought and work, particularly in the writings on sensacionism, neopaganism, iberism, heteronimism, sebastianism and the Fifth Empire, as well as in the orthonym poetry. The presence of Islam and the Islamic civilisation, although historically not addressed in Pessoa studies is, on the contrary, a penetrating and funcional element of Pessoa’s thought and work, particularly in its cultural and civilisational aspects. Pessoa thought and wrote about Islam, islamic philosophy, scientific culture in the Islamic civilisation, the Islamic presence in the medieval Iberian Peninsula and in the Portuguese history and myths; persian and Arabic literature; the mentalities and cultures of the Islamic peoples; the Arabic-Islamic presence in his own thought and work as a Portuguese and european intelectual. Dozens of documents and manuscripts may be found at Pessoa’s private library and estate, some of which are published for the first time by the author of this work, accompanied by others already previously published, concerning Islam and the Islamic civilisation. Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Partindo de uma análise exaustiva da sua biografia intelectual, visa-se discutir as raízes, os propósitos e os limites da filosofia sergiana. Deste modo, a reflexão que o autor apresenta acerca do idealismo crítico e do antiempirismo revela-se crucial para a compreensão das suas categorias do conhecimento e da sua concepção de gnosiologia enquanto ontologia. Esta discussão adensa-se, contudo, a partir do momento em que Sérgio não reduz a noção de Uno unificante a uma perspectiva gnosiológica e se mostra a favor da metafísica e do racionalismo místico. Mas tal inclinação não é desconcertante, já que, enquanto perpetuador das problemáticas filosóficas finisseculares e dos sonhos de civilização, democracia e cultura emergentes, nas primeiras décadas do século XX, de alguns dos filósofos e homens de estado europeus, António Sérgio é um filósofo simultaneamente espiritualista e criticista, um homem da Filosofia com amplo diálogo nas áreas da historiografia, da educação, da política, da economia e da religião. Em síntese, poder-se-á afirmar que o seu pensar filosófico não ficou à margem nem das suas profundas convicções doutrinárias nem da sua acção efectiva. A sua intervenção no grupo da Seara Nova e a sua actividade polemicante, por exemplo, não só revelam a sua conspiração teorética como um todo, bem como expõem a sua filosofia em estrito senso.
