Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The symbolic education in the cantoria de santinho in Povo Novo/RS: the musicality and the night governing the rite.

This work was developed at the Postgraduate Program in Education of the Faculty of Education of UFPel, in the Study and Research Group on Imaginary, Education and Memory (GEPIEM), and funded by CAPES. The dissertation deals with the cultural and formative processes of the rural and religious celebration called Cantoria de Santinho, a practice still existing, performed by the Terno de Santos of Povo Novo/RS. Looking for the symbolic elements emerging from the verses of this Cantoria, a type of education was revealed, which escapes the school walls and gives the festivity a formative role. However, this formation is specific, it is a Symbolic Education established culturally in the locality of Povo Novo. For the making of this dissertation, the research relied mainly on the Theory of Imaginary, substantiated by the anthropologist Gilbert Durand, and the History of Religions, through the Romanian historian Mircea Eliade. The methodology used to collect the data was the Direct Observation (impregnation model), with the support of audio and photographic recordings. The data analysis was based on the Symbolic Convergence (DURAND, 2012) and the phenomenological comparison of the religious and cultural examples, mainly supported by Mircea Eliade and the concept of hierophany (manifestation of the sacred). It was noticed that the master of the Terno dos Santos activates symbols in his singing, like in the escada de flores, os galos cantando (filled with a religious, festive and rural context). These symbols, repeated by the devotees, compose the Imaginary not only of the pongondó community, but of all human culture, since such symbols intertwine in timelessness and (a)spatiality, in a communion between pongondós men and women and the Ancestral Man. It is concluded that the cyclical recurrence of the festivity and the annual maintenance/permanence of the last Terno de Santos of Povo Novo is due to the rite, which fulfills its formation role in the life of those who join the festive/religious manifestation, by means of a Symbolic Education: a cultural, humane and sensitive formation.

The symbolic education of Witches Pongondós (Povo Novo – Rio Grande/RS)

The present work, entitled The Symbolic Education of Witches Pongondós (Povo Novo – Rio Grande/RS), contemplates the narrative of the experience of three ladies, the Silveira sisters, from the community of Povo Novo/RS (3rd District of Rio Grande), who, based on their memories, expose their life trajectories. Upon noticing symbolic, ancestral, and perennial elements in the daily life of that community, as well as resonant in my own journey, armed with sources and experiences with the elderly, the following problem arose: how does education occur in this space where the rusticity of traditional relationships sets the tone of daily life? And what are its roots? A space that is still on the margins of formal education. With the general objective of identifying the roots of Symbolic Education, based on the popular pongondós narratives, we came to the thesis that the set of local practices translates into a symbology capable of educating, from popular knowledge, a homo sensitive to traditional knowledge and that this indirect, non-academic knowledge, fermented in noninstitutionalized environments, is capable of providing a Symbolic Education that expresses itself from the narrative of the Pongondós Witches and is evidenced by the rusticity of the forms, the symbolism of the gestures and the loveliness. The Fates are the living metaphor of the three sisters, and evoke all the ancestry of the witch, of feminine power, of dealing with nature, and of the nurturing, healing, and loving maternal archetype - necessary factors for the educational world. Women, the individuals who are the protagonists of this research, bless, overcome adversities through sympathy, and earn their bread from the craftsmanship that springs out of their hands. But, even more, echoes through the community the healing of the world through a sensitive look, a way of life that is updated in every But, even more they echo through the community the healing of the world through a sensitive look, a way of life that is updated in generations through Symbolic Education. For this study, the methodology used for the production of sources was based on (Auto)Biography and Narratives (ABRAHÃO; PASSEGGI, 2012; DELORY-MOMBERGER, 2012) and Autoethnography (CLIFFORD, 2002; SANTOS, 2017; and VERSIANI, 2002). Regarding the theory that guides the thesis, we find in the studies of the Imaginary and in the Phenomenology of Religions and Religiosities the main bases, mainly with, respectively, Gilbert Durand (1988; 1995; 2012), when addressing the image, the anthropological path and the imaginary itself; and Mircea Eliade (2013; 2002; 1999; and 1991), in the comparison of the cultural hierophanic expressions (appearances of the sacred) and the a-historical face of our species. The thesis finds its cradle in the Group of Studies and Research on Imaginary, Education and Memory (GEPIEM), at the Faculty of Education (FaE) of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel).Sem bolsaO presente trabalho, intitulado A Educação Simbólica das Bruxas Pongondós (Povo Novo – Rio Grande/RS), contempla a narrativa da vivência de três senhoras, irmãs Silveira, da comunidade do Povo Novo/RS (3º Distrito do Rio Grande) que, a partir de suas memórias, expõem suas trajetórias de vida. Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Música regional e sertão: a representação da identidade do Tocantins do final do século XX até as primeiras décadas do século XXI

    Get PDF
The present dissertation was developed within the Professional Master's Program in Amazonian Populations (PPGHISPAM), at the Federal University of Tocantins, in the Porto Nacional campus. The study presents musical language as a cultural element that links characteristics of time and space. Therefore, as a historical source, it demonstrates that contexts of experiences can be present in regional music, reflecting identity. Thus, through the regional music of Tocantins, represented by those considered pioneers of regional musicality, we seek to analyze how the Tocantins "sertaneja" identity is represented in the songs of composers Genésio Tocantins, Braguinha Barroso, Juraildes da Cruz, and Dorivã. The representation of the Tocantins "sertaneja" identity, from the late 20th century to the current decade of the 21st century, considered the reflections of authors such as Oliveira (2016), Storniolo (2020), and Lima and Meneses (2020), who pointed out the Tocantins identity based on the history of the state's creation and recognized regional music as a feature of that identity. Thus, within this historical process, the guiding question of this study asks how the language of Tocantins regional music shows the identity of the hinterland as a historical space. For this theme to be developed, the objectives led us to seek, in four regional songs of Tocantins, the characteristic representation that gives them a regionalist identity and how much the image of this space may be linked to space and power interests. Also, to see how much the narrative in the lyrics of songs by regionalist representatives demonstrates the hinterland within a territorial context pre- existing the creation of the state of Tocantins, since the historiography of northern Goiás until 1989, with traditions and customs also marked by an agropastoral society, became the setting for the Tocantins hinterland space. The qualitative research used bibliographic reflections that supported affirming what in the language of the songs represented the hinterland in the Tocantins "sertaneja" identity. These songs demonstrated a sertão that is not restricted only to physiographic space. However, they pointed out an identity that permeates contexts of spaces, where these, same culturally transformed, carry the essence of the sertanejo experience.
