    MABS validation through repeated execution and data mining analysis

    Agent Based Modelling is the most interesting and advanced approach for simulating a complex system: in a social context, the single parts and the whole are often very hard to describe in detail. Besides, there are agent based formalisms which allow to study the emergency of social behaviour with the creation and study of models, known as artificial societies. Thanks to the ever increasing computational power, it's been possible to use such models to create software, based on intelligent agents, which aggregate behaviour is complex and difficult to predict, and can be used in open and distributed systems. Data mining is born in the last decades in order to help users in finding useful knowledge from the otherwise overwhelming amount of data available nowadays from the web and the data collected every day by companies. Data Mining techniques can therefore be the keystone to reveal non-trivial knowledge expressed by the initial assumption used to build the micro-level of the model and the structure of the society of agents that emerged from the simulation

    The Author scrutinizes the image of the enemy warrior in the early European chronicles of the Spanish conquest, within a historical-comparative approach. In the 16th century sources the image of the Indios fighting Europeans offers a very specific vision of this enemy. It was an image that had its roots in stereotypes of the past. But it had been reshaped into a new and original version. Solidarity between the devil and the Indios did not produce fearsome warriors. It was an image that did not have to hinder the expansion of European traffic

    This essay discusses Dino Buzzati’s Il grande ritratto (Larger than Life) in the theoretical coordinates provided by ecocritical reflections on science fiction. Examining the science fictional dimension of Il grande ritratto is useful both to underline the close ties the author had with the genre from a historical perspective, and to highlight the possibilities presented by science fiction in terms of the representation of technological innovations and the environment. By analyzing the nature-technology hybrid in Il grande ritratto, the essay highlights how Buzzati’s notion of the agency of matter betrays an ecophobic attitude (which is to say, a fear of the agency of nature) that is intertwined with a similar fear of female agency, due to the identification of the landscape with a female artificial intelligence

    A Chopper Class-D Amplifier for PSRR Improvement Over the Entire Audio Band

    The power supply rejection ratio (PSRR) of conventional differential closed-loop Class-D amplifiers is limited by the feedback and input resistor mismatch and finite common-mode rejection ratio (CMRR) of the operational transconductance amplifier (OTA) in the first integrator. This article presents a 14.4-V Class-D amplifier employing chopping to tackle the mismatch, thereby improving the PSRR. However, chopping-induced intermodulation (IM) within a pulsewidth modulation (PWM)-based Class-D amplifier can severely degrade PSRR and linearity. Techniques to mitigate such IM are proposed and analyzed. To chop the 14.4-V PWM output signal, a high-voltage (HV) chopper employing double-diffused MOS (DMOS) transistors is developed. Its timing is carefully aligned with that of the low-voltage (LV) choppers to avoid further linearity degradation. The prototype, fabricated in a 180-nm BCD process, achieves a PSRR of >110 dB at low frequencies, which remains above 79 dB up to 20 kHz.     A - 121.5-dB THD Class-D Audio Amplifier With 49-dB LC Filter Nonlinearity Suppression

    Class-D audio amplifiers produce electromagnetic interference (EMI), which often needs to be suppressed by an external LC filter. However, due to component nonlinearity, this filter can itself cause significant distortion. This article presents a class-D amplifier that suppresses LC filter nonlinearity by 49 dB and is robust to ±30% variations in its cutoff frequency. This is achieved by a dual-loop architecture, in which an inner loop provides stability, while an outer loop provides the high gain needed to suppress the LC filter and output-stage nonlinearity. A prototype, implemented in a 180-nm BCD process, achieves -121.5-dB total harmonic distortion (THD) and -107.1-dB THD+N, which is maintained to within 3 dB even as the LC filter cutoff frequency is varied from 62 to 106 kHz. It can deliver a maximum of 21 W into a 4-Ω load with 87% efficiency and 12 W into an 8-Ω load with 91% efficiency, measured at 10% THD.     Serum biomarkers for the prediction of hepatocellular carcinoma

    Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a leading cause of global cancer death. Major etiologies of HCC relate to chronic viral infections as well as metabolic conditions. The survival rate of people with HCC is very low and has been attributed to late diagnosis with limited treatment options. Combining ultrasound and the biomarker alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is currently one of the most widely used screening combinations for HCC. However, the clinical utility of AFP is controversial, and the frequency and operator-dependence of ultrasound lead to a variable degree of sensitivity and specificity across the globe. In this review, we summarize recent developments in the search for non-invasive serum biomarkers for early detection of HCC to improve prognosis and outcome for patients. We focus on tumor-associated protein markers, immune mediators (cytokines and chemokines), and micro-RNAs in serum or circulating extracellular vesicles and examine their potential for clinical application.Fil: Debes, José D..
