Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Education for Sustainability: Policy Intervention in India
The 17 sustainable development goals (SDG’s) by the UN General Assembly have been formulated to achieve a coherence in the approach to deal with the various social, economic and environmental challenges at the global level to grassroots level. The goals deal with a varied spectrum of global challenges and call for partnership for achieving them. To achieve the goal, the agenda begins to understand and acknowledge the issue and the prominence of the same issues deeply rooted in the values of our societies. A transformation is thus required not just at the policy level but also at the mindset of people to welcome and initiate a change in the perspective and the ways in which the society works. Climate action, for instance in goal 13 in the Sustainable development goals with the aim to “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts”, to achieve the same, it becomes of utmost importance to be aware about the current situation in depth with the root causes and impacts. Thus education, both formal and in formal, becomes crucial.
In the current scenario with cities, in particular Indian cities like Chennai, facing acute water crises, the urgency of adopting a sustainable way of living has, moved from the periphery of our thoughts to the core center of our agenda to survive. Primary education plays a key role in developing the overall personality of an individual along with the basic idea of responsibilities towards the society. At this stage if the concept of sustainability, which was defined by the by the Brundtland Commission as, "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”, is planted in the young minds, a wider benefit to the entire community can be realized. Schools play a pivotal role in bringing this change. What is required today is not just a theoretical understanding of the concept of sustainable development but a practical approach towards problem solving, critical thinking and analytical approach towards the various issues and risks that cities face today along with the attitude and intention to achieve sustainability in all the sectors.
The paper describes the role of education for achieving the targets of the Sustainable development goals along with the various tools and methodologies adopted as best practices including the various policy level interventions in India to promote an ecosystem of sustainability capacity building amongst various levels. India’s education policy and the various organization and their roles in the education for sustainable development along with the new schemes like Smart Cities mission, Swatch Bharat mission etc., play a vital role in encouragement of student engagement for sustainable development. The paper discusses the role of the same in the capacity building for sustainable development.
The paper also highlights the integration of technology and innovation in understanding the current situation of global challenges at local level to be able to draw actionable insights which can be developed into solutions at ground level. The paper examines the role of technology in increasing the participation of multiple stakeholders in the education for sustainability and subsequently actions for the achievement of the same. Recent development of web portals and mobile apps, have led to a paradigm shift in the concept of participation in the development activities and this increased participation has been encouraged by the technological advancement and greater concerns for the biodiversity in the society.
The paper concludes with recommendations, based on the best practices globally, that can be adopted in cities for an enhanced quality of education for sustainable development through encouraging a deeper understanding of the need of actions today
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Growth strategy of trees related to successional status II. Leaf dynamics
The leaf dynamics of two early (Alnus nepalensis and Schima khasiana) and three late (Machilus kingii, Quercus dealbata and Q. griffithii) successional tree species of a subtropical humid, evergreen, montane forest at Upper Shillong (1900 m) in north-eastern India has been studied using demographic techniques. The open-grown early successional species show greater leaf production and higher turnover rate than the open-grown late successional species. The latter, under forest situations, have still slower turnover rates but with leaves of several age groups. It is suggested that the early successional species are attuned to environments of temporary resource availability while the late successional species are adapted to the relatively predictable but highly competitive environments of closed forests

The architecture and growth pattern of early (Alnus nepalensis and Schima khasiana) and late (Machilus kingii, Quercus dealbata and Q. griffithii) successional tree species in a sub-tropical montane, humid, evergreen forest at Upper Shillong (1900 m) in north-east India were analyzed and related to their ecological strategy for niche occupancy in the forest ecosystem. In the early successional species the architectural development pattern and growth design are geared to maximize production under high light environments. These trees have an indeterminate pattern of shoot growth, a prolonged growth period with greater extension growth and rhythmicity (except for A. nepalensis with continuous growth) and branch mainly by syllepsis. These species emphasize vertical growth at the expense of lateral spread. In contrast, the late successional species make modest growth under a determinate scheme, the growth being confined to preformed bud primordia for a brief period of the growing season. There is less rhythmicity in growth and branch productin is by prolepsis. These species emphasize lateral spread, as an adaptation to highly competitive environments. In forest situations these species have one determinate flush of shoot growth only but in open situations there were two such flushes. Bifurcation ratio values are found to vary in forest and open situations, suggesting the capacity of the species to adjust their architecture to changed light conditions

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
