The Politics of the 'New' Welfare States: Analysing Reforms in Western Europe
In this introductory chapter we review in a very brief and stylised manner the main changes that have taken place over the last decade in advanced welfare states. The Politics of the New Welfare State
With this book, we would like to move beyond a simple characterisation of this emerging settlement in terms of “newness”. On the basis of the most recent advances in welfare state research, our first objective is to gain a better understanding of the welfare settlement that is emerging in Europe. What role is the welfare state playing in today’s post-industrial society? To what extent are welfare states shifting away from the provision of income protection and towards social investment? Our second objective refers to the politics of this transformation. We are interested in finding out what are the mechanisms and trajectories that lead to the new welfare state. What role are the key political actors playing? How do they position themselves in the new social policy arena
The twisted cubic in PG(3,q) and translation spreads in H(q)
AbstractUsing the connection between translation spreads of the classical generalized hexagon H(q) and the twisted cubic of PG(3,q), established in [European J. Combin. 23 (2002) 367–376], we prove that if qn≡1(mod3), q odd, q⩾4n2-8n+2 and n>2, then H(qn) does not admit an Fq-translation spread

Multidimensional Transformations in the Early 21st Century Welfare States
Wit this chapter we want to be able to characterise the welfare settlement as it exists in the early 21st century. Our focus on multidimensionality allows us to identify patterns of change in several different sub-fields of the welfare state. Empirically, this text provides clear evidence of the direction taken by social policy over the last decade or so. What is more complicated, however, is to provide an interpretation that makes sense of it all
