Interview with James F. Bonner
Interview in 1980 with professor of biology James Bonner begins with his recollections of growing up in an academic family. In 1929, his father, a physical chemist at the University of Utah, was a visitor at Caltech, where Bonner enrolled as a junior. Recalls course work with X-ray crystallographer Roscoe G. Dickinson and activities of Division of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering under Arthur Amos Noyes; humanities courses with William B. Munro; physics with Earnest Watson, William V. Houston, and Carl Anderson; geology with John P. Buwalda; and biology with Thomas Hunt Morgan, Henry Borsook, and Theodosius Dobzhansky. Became Dobzhansky's summer researcher and editor; switched from chemistry to biology. Graduate work with Dobzhansky on Drosophila genetics and Kenneth Thimann on plant hormone auxin. Friendship with Noyes. NRC postdoctoral fellowship to Utrecht, Leiden, and ETH, 1934-35. Joined Caltech's Biology Division in 1936 as an instructor: recalls colleagues Frits Went, Arie J. The L-p-to-L-q boundedness of commutators with applications to the Jacobian operator
Supplying the missing necessary conditions, we complete the characterisation of the L-p -> L-q boundedness of commutators [b, T] of pointwise multiplication and Calderon-Zygmund operators, for arbitrary pairs of 1 q, our results are new even for special classical operators with smooth kernels. As an application, we show that every f is an element of L-p(R-d) can be represented as a convergent series of normalised Jacobians J(u) = det del uof u is an element of (over dot(W))(1,dp)(R-d)(d). This extends, from p = 1 to p > 1, a result of Coifman, Lions, Meyer and Semmes about J:. Double-clad structures and proximity coupling for diode-bar-pumped planar waveguide lasers
We report, for the first time, fabrication of double-clad planar waveguide structures and their use for multiwatt, diode-bar-pumped, planar waveguide lasers based on Nd3+ and Yb3+-doped YAG. The direct-bonded, five-layer structures of sapphire, YAG, and rare-earth-doped YAG have sufficient numerical aperture to capture the fast-axis divergence of a diode bar by proximity coupling with no intervening optics, leading to very simple and compact devices. The restriction of the doped region to the central core leads to diffraction-limited laser output in the guided direction. We also show that the direct-bonding fabrication process can lead to a linearly polarized output

Determination of transglutaminase activity in plants
Transglutaminase (TGase:E.C. 2.3.2.13) catalyzes the acyl-transfer reaction between one or two primary amino groups of polyamines and protein-bound Gln residues giving rise to post-translational modifications. One increasing the positive charge on a proteins surface and the other results in the covalent crosslinking of proteins. Pioneering studies on TGase in plants started in the middle of the 1980âs but the methodology designed for use with animal extracts was not directly applicable to plant extracts. Here we describe radioactive and colorimetric methods adapted to study plant TGase, as well as protocols to analyze the involvement of TGase and polyamines in the functionality of cytoskeletal proteins

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. A cross‐sectional study exploring cognitive impairment in kidney failure
Background: Little is known of the prevalence or associated factors of cognitive impairment in people with kidney failure. Assessment of cognition is necessary to inform comprehension of healthcare information, aptitude for dialysis modality and informed decision making. Objectives: This study sought to determine the prevalence and factors associated with cognitive impairment in people with kidney failure. Design: Prospective cross-sectional. Participants: Participants (n = 222) with chronic kidney disease grade 5 (CKD G5) including those not treated with dialysis, those undertaking dialysis independently or in a facility (CKD 5D), and those with a kidney transplant (CKD 5T). Measurements: Data were collected using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment tool, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (only the depression subscale), and a demographic questionnaire. Type of kidney disease and comorbidities were extracted from participants' hospital records. Results: Participants were 61 ± 13.63 years old; most were male (61.26%), and diabetes was the primary cause of kidney disease (34%). Prevalence of cognitive impairment was 34% although it was significantly higher for those in CKD G5 compared with other groups. A number of factors were found to be associated with cognitive impairment including, age, diabetes, hypertension, education, haemoglobin, albumin, parathyroid hormone, CKD G5, and length of time on treatment. Conclusions: Cognitive impairment in kidney failure is common and it has significant implications for informed decision making and treatment choices. Routine assessment of cognitive function is an important part of clinical practice.No Full Tex

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
