No full textThe article focuses on a preamble written in Latin by the late Renaissance humanist and diplomat Jacques Bongars. The preliminary of the volume Rerum Hungaricarum scriptores varii, the first Hungarian historical source collection, explores the Hungarian People’s origin and the history of the Hungarian Kingdom. The author links Bongars, the central figure in sixteenthseventeenth-century Central Europe, to the European information networks, as well as to Hungarian Humanist circles, and draws a parallel between his source collection and Matthias Bel’s work. By analysing the volume impacts, Jacques Bongars is presented as the foundation stone of Hungarian historiography

No full textIn 1568 Johannes Rosa (1532–1571)—Professor of History, Ethics, Logic, and Theology at the Lutheran University of Jena—delivered a set of lectures on Herodotus. Rosa never published anything on Herodotus but one of his stu- dents, a fourteen-year old French Huguenot by the name of Jacques Bongars (1554–1612), assiduously copied down Rosa’s words, bound them with the rest of his school-notes, and kept the volume throughout his itinerant diplomatic career. They survive today in manuscript at the Burgerbibliothek in Bern along with the rest of Bongars’s Nachlass.1 Rosa was not a renowned Hellenist, nor did his lectures attract much attention. As such, their chance survival gives us an opportunity to look inside a fairly unremarkable classroom in Lutheran Germany, and to ask how and why young students at a late sixteenth-century Lutheran university studied ancient Greek history

No full textRésumé : L’article propose un examen du manuscrit Berne, Burgerbibliothek, ms. 125, un recueil de récits de voyage qui contient les traductions de Jean le Long, le Devisement du monde de Marco Polo et le Livre des merveilles de Jean de Mandeville. Il s’agit d’un manuscrit du xve siècle qui rassemble trois fascicules différents et qui a probablement été composé par le duc Charles d’Orléans pour entrer successivement dans la bibliothèque de la famille des Pons de Périgord. Il a ensuite appartenu à Jacques Bongars, érudit du xviie siècle intéressé par l’histoire des croisades, qui a vraisemblablement utilisé ce manuscrit pour sa compilation. On essayera ici de comprendre les raisons de cette composition et de reconstruire l’histoire du recueil jusqu’à son entrée dans la bibliothèque de Berne.Mots-clés : Manuscrits ‒ Tradition textuelle ‒ Récit de voyage ‒ Jean le Long ‒ Hayton ‒ Marco Polo ‒ Jean de Mandeville ‒ Charles d’Orléans ‒ Bertrand Richart ‒ Marie de Clèves ‒ Jacques Bongars ABSTRACT : This paper intends to examine the manuscript Berne, Burgerbibliothek, ms. 125, a collection of travel accounts which contains Jean le Long’s translations, Marco Polo’s Devisement du monde and John of Mandeville’s Livre des merveilles. This xvth century manuscript is composed by three different booklets and it has probably been composed by the duke Charles of Orléans. In the same century, it entered in the Pons de Périgord family’s library. In the xviith century it belonged to Jacques Bongars, an erudite who probably used this manuscript in order to write his history of the crusades.
