Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Myrmekiaphila flavipes (Petrunkevitch), new combination Figures 1, 106 Aptostichus flavipes Petrunkevitch, 1925: 317 (female holotype from Mitchell, Lawrence Co., Indiana, in AMNH, examined). DIAGNOSIS: Females can be distinguished on the basis of their unique spermathecal morphology (fig. 106): the spermathecae are widely separated and have a small base, with a relatively elongate stalk terminating in a very lightly sclerotized hemispherical bulb. DESCRIPTION: Female described by Petrunkevitch (1925); males are unknown. MATERIAL EXAMINED: UNITED STATES: INDIANA: Lawrence Co.: Mitchell [38.7328 –86.4736, MYR204], Sept. 1, 1906 (A., W. Petrunkevitch, AMNH), 1♀ (holotype). DISTRIBUTION: Known only from the type locality in Mitchell, Indiana (fig. 1).Published as part of BOND, JASON E. & PLATNICK, NORMAN I., 2007, A Taxonomic Review of the Trapdoor Spider Genus Myrmekiaphila (Araneae, Mygalomorphae, Cyrtaucheniidae), pp. 1-32 in American Museum Novitates 3596 (1) on page 29, DOI: 10.1206/0003-0082(2007)3596[1:ATROTT]2.0.CO;2, http://zenodo.org/record/471278
