Cryptocurrencies - a future form of money? An analysis of the functionality of Bitcoin as a means of exchange and payment

    Get PDF
With the rise of market capitalisation of cryptocurrencies in 2018, Bitcoin in particular and to lesser extent also its offspring, commonly referred to as Altcoins, have gained significant interest by governments, institutions and investors. The future of these new forms of currency remains a topic that is debated heavily. While some enthusiasts believe that the status of cryptocurrencies will rise up to the point where they are equivalent or even replacing traditional currencies in some departments of online commerce, sceptics usually evaluate them as a dubious new form of assets with no intrinsic value. The latter thereby often point at the large sell-off of cryptocurrencies in the first quarter of 2018 as the beginning of the end of the crypto era. This work aims at elaborating the characteristics of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin by applying monetary theory to answer the research question whether Bitcoin is actually feasible to serve as a future means of payment and exchange and which consequences result of this feasibility for the cryptocurrency in the future. While Bitcoin provides reasonable advantages to individuals involved in monetary online transactions and from a theoretical perspective also fulfils the criteria for a means of exchange, the cryptocurrency will likely face difficulties to attract more users due to issues regarding its scalability, price volatility and many more. Alongside with other technical restrictions, the author concludes that - considering all facts presented in this work – Bitcoin in its current state will be unable to achieve a transaction volume comparable to PayPal, Visa or Mastercard and will therefore only play a niche-role in certain environments as a future means of payment

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Probabilities and predictions – How heuristics and biases influence private investor behavior

    Get PDF
Classic economic theory supposes that its agents are rational in their decision making and action. Various empirical studies, however, indicate that individuals are by no means perfect rational utility maximizers. Evidence from cognitive psychology shows where humans abandon the rational path in decision making and utilize simple heuristics to draw conclusions quicker. These heuristics can potentially bias individual investor behavior and create situations in which investors are worse off because they do not follow the rational postulates of classic economic theory. This thesis investigates the influence of heuristics and biases on individual investor behavior. Thereby, it examines various empirical studies concerned with investor behavior that contradicts the principles of classic economic theory. Explanations that stem from the area of cognitive psychology and the discipline of Behavioral Finance are utilized to explain this counterintuitive investor behavior. Indeed, empirical studies suggest that individuals are subject to heuristics and biases also when conducting investments. However, it remains difficult to determine the degree to which psychological factors influence investor decision making

The Monetary Transmission Mechanism – an Analysis with Focus on German Banks

    Get PDF
The present thesis investigates the impact of European Central Bank’s (ECB) mone-tary policy measures on the lending behaviour of several German bank types by means of a structural vector autoregression (SVAR) analysis covering the past 19 years on a quarterly basis. Hence, the paper contributes to the ongoing discussion on the effect-tiveness of the monetary transmission mechanism’s channels in times of unconven-tional monetary policy regimes. The theoretical approach includes a thematic classification and presentation of the topic’s relevance, while also money as such and the corresponding creation proces-ses, including the money multiplier, are addressed. This is followed by a presentation of ECB’s toolkit for monetary policy measures and how these are expected to influence the overall price level. The functioning of the transmission mechanism is analysed as well as the effectiveness of ECB’s measures. Finally, SVAR is presented theoretically before the actual analysis and its results are displayed. The analysis yields statistically significant models which assign only little importance to ECB’s measures themselves. Rather, the lending behaviour of banks seems to be determined by them indirectly and additionally by other factors, such as the output and the demand for credit. Moreover, some distinct differences can be identified between the single bank types. In conclusion, the thesis provides further empirical evidence for the yet unsolved puzzle of how to motivate banks to increase their lending while showing various areas of possible further research
