No full textThis writing aims to convey the essential nature and features of a cultural tool based on a set of skills and capabilities generally referred to as "life skills", which allow for the proper management (in the medical and medical-forensic professional realms) of daily situations in an effective and rewarding fashion. Such a process is based on individual tools such as communication, problem solving, stress management, self-control, the ability to make timely decisions, empathy, creativity and the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary setting. Life skills include everything the professional should rely on in order to minimize the risks of a professional error, through the acquisition of knowledge and behavioral traits which constitute the fundamental, experience-based starting point. The chief objective of this commentary is to outline the scope of a straightforward discussion by specifically defining such skills; that in turn will make it possible to identify all the technical issues to address during the medical-diagnostic assessment, also from a medico-legal perspective, in order to frame the residual life skills and evaluate the possibilities of recovery and any disabilities, based on observation and interactions with each patient aimed at weighing their psychophysical performance

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Innovative Strategies for Hip Synovial Chondromatosis and Its Medico-Legal Implications
Full text linkPrimary synovial chondromatosis of the hip is a rare pathology characterized by metaplastic changes in the synovium, leading to the formation of cartilage nodules and, eventually, free intra-articular bodies. Early manifestations, such as pain, stiffness, and limited mobility, require timely differential diagnostic process through imaging techniques, with magnetic resonance imaging being the gold standard diagnostic method, complemented by histopathological analysis. Considering the rarity of the condition, the diagnostic suspicion is linked to the expertise of the professional and the referral to specialized centers/professionals. While, the evolution toward minimally invasive surgical techniques and a multidisciplinary approach has improved clinical outcomes, the level of evidence in the different surgical approach are worthy of further long-term investigation. Furthermore, the definition of multidisciplinary diagnostic-therapeutic protocols based on evidence is of importance. In conclusion, the careful management of the condition, along with detailed docu mentation, is essential to minimize medico-legal implications associated with potential diagnostic delays, interpretative errors or improper surgical approach indication

No full textBackground: Among the deaths recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic, some were caused by clinical manifestations of venous thromboembolic disease, mainly pulmonary embolism. Several litigations were settled worldwide for professional malpractice associated with COVID-19 and anticoagulant therapy management. The authors aimed to discuss, as court-appointed consultants in civil court, a case settled for compensation against a healthcare facility associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Case report: We described the case of an old patient in therapy with a direct oral anticoagulant for thrombotic diathesis, hospitalized for COVID-19 pneumonia, who died after two intra-hospital adverse events influencing coagulation imbalance. Discussion: Two health professionals’ malpractice hypotheses were discussed related to the adverse events’ occurrence: one related to the administration of an enema, resulting in rectal perforation, and the other related to proper anticoagulant prophylaxis and comprehensive coagulation imbalance management after the rectal perforation in a patient at high risk of venous thromboembolic disease. Intra-hospital adverse events complicated the hospitalization and then significantly reduced the concrete possibility, even uncertain in terms of time and extent, of the patient’s living longer, representing the damage of reduced possibilities of survival, also called loss-of-chance damage. Conclusions: The case discussed as court advisors, characterized by clinical and legal complexity, together with SARS-CoV-2 infection, underscores the vital role of forensic examiners in cause-of-death ascertainment and as interpreters of statistical-probabilistic data according to naturalistic, logical, and scientific criteria
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
