Tsantsa – Journal of the Swiss Anthropological Association

The world is experiencing new relations between natural, synthetic, and digital substances. Rather than considering these as materially distinct or ontologically separate, this special issue of TSANTSA interrogates how they are interlocked in socio-material processes of mediation, transmutation, and valuation. By conceptualizing the specificity of their separateness, the special issue makes possible the comparison and commensuration of their relationship, and to move beyond their essential qualities. What are the boundaries, leakages, or dis/connections between human and digital, natural and artificial, the organic and synthetic matters? Based on ethnographic research in laboratories, gold refineries, bio-tech microbial seeds and digitally-produced natural sounds, human-machine apps and cellular agriculture, each contribution theorizes the mediation, transmutation, and valuation of natural synthetics, the humanness of artificial intelligence, or the materiality of digital elements

Schools are places where specific temporalities are enacted daily through teaching practices both inside and outside the classrooms. This paper, which draws on ethnographic research in more than fifteen international private schools in Switzerland, looks at the accelerated temporality that prevails in these schools. International private schools have been expanding massively in Switzerland since the 2000s. We suggest that international schools, which explicitly forge a link between the cosmopolitan condition and uncertainty as a context of learning, train students to be autonomous and to be able to cope with the exigencies of flexibility and mobility that characterize the model of the multinational corporation. In this context, the article argues that it is through the temporal dimension of teaching technologies in international schools that the initial social advantages of students are maintained and enhanced. The process of autonomisation that we describe take several forms – temporal and spatial – which constitute the two axes of the article: the first addresses the accelerated temporality in the space of the school, and the other looks at the effects of the spatial reordering of the school upon learning temporalities. Finally, we discuss the ambivalent position of teachers towards these temporal transformations, wavering between belief in their emancipatory potential and increasing precarity of employment conditions

This article examines recent reorganisations in the gold trade in Mali (in Bamako) in the light of the competition between buying houses (comptoirs) and newly-established refineries for the acquisition and export of gold from artisanal mines in a context of political crisis. The contrasting strategies of the comptoirs, which rely on complex networks of support and dependency, and the refineries, which claim to be part of the movement of so-called “responsible” supply chains, shed light on the issues surrounding the reappropriation of the rhetoric of responsible trade. The article also highlights the two strategies from the standpoint of the gold rush that is currently taking place in the north of the country in areas administered by different “rebel” factions. It thus raises the question of the inevitably problematic integration of the gold arriving from this gold rush into the trading channels in Bamako, thereby pointing up certain ambiguities in Mali’s mining policy, particularly with regard to the northern regions of the country

When miners become “foreigners”: Competing categorizations within gold mining spaces in Guinea

Drawing on ethnographic research and problem-centered interviews in Guinean mining areas, this paper presents a comparative reading of the conflicting conceptions of what constitutes a “mining community.” First, I explore how independent artisanal miners describe and identify their activity. The weight of autochthony conventions is discussed concerning their insertion both in the mining fields and in their living locations. Second, I focus the case study on how the corporate social responsibility (CSR) interventions toward the mining community, commissioned by a gold mining company in Guinea, are interpreted by the artisanal miners. The analysis of the deployed discourses and related interventions delineate what is defined as the mining community in CSR programs, and how these interventions shape new understandings of the company׳s territory among the miners. Using a boundary work approach, the paper shows how CSR interventions symbolically transpose the spatial concession border into symbolic and social boundaries among the artisanal mineworkers. CSR discourses and interventions transform “trespassers” into “foreigners”, as opposed to “natives”, who are often viewed as “traditional sedentary workers” by the mining company. In doing this, CSR programs reinforce and standardize autochthony-based relations, and extend autochthony boundaries in all segments of the gold mining socio-technical system. The attachment of these initially separated categories creates an idealized figure of “traditional” artisanal mining, while also stigmatizing the itinerant artisanal miners. As a consequence, I will discuss the emergence of conflict situations regarding access to mining spaces and resources within the surrounding villages
