The way deans run their faculties in Indonesian universities

Using the theory of reasoned action in combination with the Competing Values Framework of organizational leadership, our study examines how deans at Indonesian universities lead and manage their faculties. Based on a large-scale survey with responses from more than 200 Indonesian deans, the study empirically identifies a number of deanship styles: the Master, the Competitive Consultant, the Focused Team Captain, the Consensual Goal-Setter and the Informed Trust-Builder style. Further, the study investigates determinants of deans’ leadership styles, pointing at the important role of their attitudes towards leadership, while their perceived behavioural control only explains some of the styles. The study also suggests that faculty culture is important to take into consideration if we want to gain further understanding of the deanship, since culture turned out to effect the deans’ attitudes and hence their leadership styl

The balance between teaching and research in Dutch and English universities in the context of university governance reforms

The expectations and demands with respect to teaching and research have been changing for universities due to changes in their institutional environments. Born out of changing national research policies and modern governance arrangements, efficiency, effectiveness and output-oriented cultures have become increasingly important. In this article we ask the question of what the consequences of these changing institutional environments are for the teaching-research nexus as experienced by academics at universities. We explore the changing practices of teaching and research in eight research units in research-led universities in England and The Netherlands. The sources of our empirical investigation are documentary evidence as well as interview data from 48 academics in biotechnology and medieval history. Our findings suggest that teaching and research are increasingly falling apart as two distinct activities. Success or failure in research acquisition and performance assessments has serious implications for the work portfolios in terms of teaching and research load of the research units

A his-tagged Melanocarpus albomycesLaccase and its electrochemistry upon immobilisation on NTA-modified electrodes and in conducting polymer films

    No full text
The article describes the construction, immobilisation and electrochemistry of histidine tagged laccase from Melanocarpus albomyces. A facile method of functionalisation of glassy carbon electrodes with nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA) using diazonium grafting and solid state chemistry is described. NTA-modified electrodes are shown to bind laccase which reduces oxygen at neutral pH in the presence of soluble redox mediator. Laccase-modified electrodes are also prepared by enzyme immobilisation within poly(aniline)/poly(vinylsulfonate) films. The polymer is found to efficiently retain the enzyme as well as provide direct electrical contact between the electrode and the enzyme active centre. Cyclic voltammetry reveals the direct electron transfer to the enzyme is dependent on the redox state of the polymer fil

Designing and developing OM research – from concept to publication

Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify similarities and differences between qualitative-based and quantitative-based research, and to present recommendations for designing and conducting the research so that the possibilities of publishing it in leading Operations Management (OM) journals are improved. Design/methodology/approach: The paper takes its outset in contributions made at the 2016 European Operations Management Association Young Scholars Workshop. The theme of the workshop was “Designing and developing research projects in Operations Management – from concept to publication.” Taking the perspectives of the case researcher, the survey researcher and the editor/reviewer, the authors present and discuss the views on and experiences with designing research for publication. Findings: The authors identify a number of recommendations that researchers should use when designing, conducting, and presenting their research for publication. The recommendations include the need to clearly and concisely establish relevance, account for choice of methodology as well as the operationalization, sampling, analytical, and validation methods used, and demonstrate the contribution of the paper in the discussion section. Furthermore, the authors draw attention to the importance of developing a publication strategy as early as possible. Other important aspects include the title of the paper, keywords selection, and rejection criteria. Finally, the authors stress the importance of “total quality management” in designing and executing OM research. Originality/value: Going beyond the standard author guidelines found at journal web sites, the authors present a collection of viewpoints, which are based on the authors’ experiences as reviewers, editors, and evaluators of OM research projects and their designs.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

    Managerial implications and future directions

This chapter provides an overview of the main results of the international CI study and examines the implications of these results for organisations and the managers attempting to guide and develop these organisations. We also consider the possible future development of CI and suggest what areas might be most valuable for future research in this area

Strengthening Research at the Dutch ‘Hogescholen’: From Ideas to Institutionalization

In using an ideational approach of policy analysis, this chapter describes and analyses the establishment and institutionalisation of a research function as the second core task of the Dutch universities of applied sciences Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) in the period 2001–2015. The overarching goal of this structural reform is to contribute to the strengthening of the innovative capacity of the Netherlands by the optimal use of the UAS sector in delivering highly skilled modern graduates and services needed by regional industry and the public sector. At the turn of the millennium, several instruments have been introduced to strengthen the UAS research function such as by means of the introduction of new staff positions at the UAS, grants for practice-oriented research and grants for the establishment of Centres of Expertise. The government provided the funding for these initiatives through additional budgets, alongside the operational basic grant, initially as temporary funding, and independent national agencies were established to manage the reform initiatives. In the 15 years since the first steps were taken, the research function of UAS has obtained a structural and indispensable position in Dutch higher education. In this respect, the structural reform has been successful. Nonetheless, in the chapter, a number of critical observations are being made
