DOMESTICATION PROCESS OF TWO SOLANUM SECTION LASIOCARPA SPECIES AMONG AMERINDIANS IN THE UPPER ORINOCO, VENEZUELA, WITH SPECIAL FOCUS ON PIAROA INDIANS. Economic Botany 58(2):000–000, 2004. Two semi-cultivated Solanum species (S. sessiliflorum Dunal and S. stramonifolium Jacq.) are utilized by the Amazonian Indians of the Upper Orinoco Basin in Venezuela. The manner by which they have become partially domesticated by the Piaroas and other native tribes of this rain forest region is elucidated in the following text. Both species have two varieties, with and without prickles, the latter the result of human selection. Patterns of indigenous utilization of these species by the selection of morphologic forms and to the differentiation of karyotypes of varieties, and exploitation of the species reflects also in the perception of them among users. S. sessiliflorum is cultivated in swiddens and has an economic role, whereas S. stramonifolium is grown in dooryards. This difference is detectable to the Piaroas, as they recognize in their folk taxonomy three different varieties of the S. sessiliflorum and one of S. stramonifolium, this according to the stage of domestication of the species and the way in which they are utilized

    No full text
In this volume, the author publishes 240 Messenger Texts from the city of Umma, texts that are currently housed in the collections of the Yale Babylonian Collection and the Harvard Semitic Museum. Earlier volumes of Nisaba published nearly 900 similar Messenger Texts that are in the collections of the British Museum. The texts published here range in date from the fifth month of Amar-Suen 3 to the twelfth month of Ibbi-Sîn. These administrative records provide data on the allotment of rations and disbursement of goods and thus form a basis for further study of the sociology and economics of Neo-Sumerian times in and around the city of Umma

    No full text
Drawing on local sources and on old and new historical literature, the author examines the social and geographical spread of the cult of the Holy Nail, a relic from Christ’s Cross preserved in the Milan Cathedral. The related iconography centers round the procession organized by Carlo Borromeo during the plague of 1576, when the Sacro Chiodo was carried through the streets of Milan, and the Saint’s personal veneration for the relic. From Milan, where most of the surviving paintings were produced, the cult spread to the near-by province of Novara, including the town itself, lake Orta and the Sesia and Ossola valleys. The Sacro Chiodo devotion can thus be regarded as typical of the religious climate of the area spanning present-day western Lombardy and eastern Piedmont

The research aims to investigate Luigi Meneghello’s translations of texts by Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Donne, William Butler Yeats and Edward Estlin Cummings. Most part of Meneghello’s translation work is published in Trapianti (Rizzoli, 2002). The volume contains forty-three vicentine translations from Shakespeare, Wordsworth, Hopkins, Cummings, Empson, Yeats and Campbell. The autograph documents, which testify the various drafts of Trapianti, are owned by the Maria Corti Foundation. They are preserved in the Meneghello Fund of the Centre for Studies on the Manuscript Tradition of Modern and Contemporary Authors at the University of Pavia. The Fund includes the drafts of numerous unpublished translations, based on texts by both authors present in the volume (Cummings, Hopkins, Yeats) and authors who were instead excluded (Arnold, Don Marquis, Larkin, Donne). After an initial examination of the material preserved at the Fund, I selected the four aforementioned authors. Such choice was made following the criterion of representativeness of Meneghello’s translation work. In this study, every translation made by the Italian author was analyzed – even those unfinished or constituted by a few verses. Every analysis was completed by a genetic apparatus. The research was in fact conducted both from a critical and philological perspective, in order to produce an in-depth study on every phase of the translation work. In addition, a comparison with other literary works by Meneghello was made, to orient the critical readings both synchronically and diachronically. In the research, the genetic apparatus of each text is followed by a critical analysis. These insights are dedicated to identifying points where translation work deviates most from a literal translation, showing a deeper authorial intervention. The broader aim is to deepen the programmatic approach of Meneghello’s translation practice. His work of linguistic adaptation appears in fact free and not referential in most cases, as the study allows us to observe. In conclusion, the study highlighted how Trapianti is a work aimed at bridging the gap that separates a regional language from a national and literary language. The author has thus established a comparison between cultures on equal basis, counteracting the risk of a linguistic hierarchy

37, par. The Regulation (EU) 2016/679 (also known as General Data Protection Regulation or “GDPR”), in defining a framework of rules for the protection of personal data, establishes the obligation to designate the Data Protection Officer (DPO) in three specific cases and, among these, when the processing of personal data is carried out by a public authority or a public body. Starting from the provisions of art. 37, par. 1, lett. a) GDPR, the paper investigates the meaning to be attributed to the expressions “public authority” and “public body”. The author points out the lackness of a specific provision and analyzes the ratio of art. 37 GDPR, goes so far as to say that the expressions should be investigated in a dynamic and substantial perspective, looking at the nature of the interests pursued by the entity and not, instead, at its legal form. Therefore, the list of obliged subjects – for which it is not only suggested, but it is mandatory to designate the DPO – should be reconstructed in an extensive key, as including all those entities that exercise public functions and, consequently, they hold the same supremacy position towards the data subjects

Planning a Monumental London in the Early Nineteenth Century. Projects, administrative machine, time and people around Regent Street

The thesis is on the transformation of Regent Street in London in the early nineteenth century. Regent Street was conceived within the London Metropolitan Improvements, and its design and execution are considered a different model from every other street. Within its history, Regent Street suffered several transformations, adjustments and at last complete rebuilding. Currently, even if the street has been completely rebuilt, the original Regent Street perspectives left a sign that remains not only in the plan but also in the image and the imaginary of the city as part of Cultural Heritage. In this research, the street is studied in the context of several proposals and ideas of improvements. The study looks to the new and to the old city. The new project enlightens also some aspects of the old city thanks to the kind of sources written and illustrated produced. It enlightens the process of construction by surveying the procedures and the pre-existing conditions. The study discusses time, causes and events that from an idea of project led to a demolition. Finally, it also aims to discuss if this interruption represents a fail within the project. Some questions still remained open by the published literature. The thesis, through the discovery of new documentation by the author, aims first to enlighten the conceiving and constructing processes of Regent Street. It also aims to study the relationships between the project of John Nash and the other projects, the receiving of the street and issues and matters after its construction. Therefore, the most emblematic part of Nash’s project, the Regent’s Quadrant, had never been a specific object of study before. Thanks to an unpublished sketch by hand of Nash found during this research, new inputs emerges in order to understand the peculiar shape of the Regent’s Quadrant. Another corpus of unpublished documents, related to the modifications to the original project of the street, has been found during this research in the archives, then dated and contextualized by the author in order to create a new chronology of the street building site

The expression “Social Responsibility” referred to the business community has been apparently used for the first time in Japan, in 1956. In a pamphlet titled “Consciousness and practice of the Social Responsibility of the Businessmen”, the Japanese Association of Corporate Executives (Nihon Keizai Dōyūkai) described the social role of enterprises in a surprisingly up-to-date way. Which were the reasons leading to such a precocious interest in corporate ethics? When did CSR spread in Japan? In which way have Japanese enterprises responded to the challenge of accounting for their impact on society? To what extent did the Japanese institutional framework contribute to the adoption of CSR related practices? This article tries to answer these questions. The first section analyses the debate on CSR in Japan, elaborating on the role of Nippon Keidanren and the CSR focused initiatives sponsored by the state. The second section provides an empirical analysis of Japanese enterprises’ attitude towards CSR related issues, based on reports by the main Japanese corporate organisations and on a survey by the author. A description of the main laws on welfare, wages, labour, safety and the environment completes the analysis. The findings of the article point to a role of Japan as a pioneer of CSR in Asia

Scientific avatars or doing anthropology of (and against) our modern discontent

The author analyses James Cameron's Avatar (2009) exploring the structures of feeling and the cosmopolitics responsible for the success of the film with audiences worldwide. Close attention is given to the study of two dominant possibilities of understanding indigenous alterity in the contemporary world: metropolitan alternativism and an alter-native cosmopolitanism. The second part of this article deals with recent anthropological debates that polarized the academic world in relation to the politics of recognition and the implications of cultural differences. The author concludes by discussing the politics of translation and the possibilities for critical theory from the perspective of scholars doing anthropological research from the Global South.Fil: Briones, Claudia Noemi. Perché i giovani fanno selfie?

    No full text
The study presented in this paper explored the range of motivations of selfie taking and sharing, with a specific attention to the processes of identity work and representation. A survey involved a sample of students of the University of Bari (aged 18-35, N=566). Biographical memory, self-expression and amusement are the main motivations arising from the survey, respectively associated with the identity functions of remembering, self-representation and playing. Based on the survey results and a theoretical framework on identity work and new media, the article explores possible directions for research and educational practice, with an effort to focus strengths and weakness of selfie as a symbolic resource in the identity process. Selfies can play a role in identity exploration. A selfie inspires its author to reflect on the own self and his/her relationship with places and experiences as identity markers. At the same time, a selfie is a looking-glass capturing social reactions from a range of possible publics. However, the survey also highlights some educational limits of the selfie since it seems mainly an autarchic and self-referential form of communication, with uncertain effects on the development of dialogic identities, and the tendency to reproduce gender stereotypes on the digital space

    Get PDF
The Dialogo della divina provvidenza or Libro della divina dottrina is a mystical-theological treatise composed by Catherine of Siena between 1377 and 1378. This work, which earned Catherine the title of Doctor of the Church, has not yet been published in a critical edition, based on an exhaustive analysis of the Dialogo’s manuscript tradition. The absence of a reliable text has long discouraged a detailed study of Catherine’s language and prose. Moreover, there are no comprehensive contributions on the circulation and reception of the work, as well as on its literary sources. The aim of the present study is to analyse the manuscript tradition of the Dialogo della divina provvidenza. The first chapter provides a literary-historical background to the work, with the aim of reconstructing the circulating and receiving environments of the text, as well as presenting an overview of Catherine’s prose models. The second chapter is devoted to the presentation of the data derived from the census of the manuscript tradition, followed by a palaeographical-codicological description of the 27 manuscripts. A third chapter is dedicated to the linguistic analysis – related with the description of the codices – which supports not only the localisation of the manuscripts themselves, but also the reconstruction of the history of the tradition. The fourth chapter proposes a syntactic analysis of the text, which includes some linguistic and textual phenomena typical of Catherine’s prose, selected on the basis of the following criteria: 1) syntactic aspects justifying the editorial choices; 2) syntactic tendencies typical of the author; 3) syntactic phenomena that might cause difficulties in reading; 4) phenomena related to the “transcribed speech” typology. In the fifth chapter we present the results obtained after the collatio and recensio of all manuscripts (and three incunabula), including a partial collation of the two complete Latin versions of the treatise. On the basis of the loci critici identified and from the demonstration of families, groups and subgroups, we have traced two stemmata codicum, which give an account of the possible configuration of the tradition for books I-III and IV-V. Finally, after explaining the criteria adopted for the constitutio textus, the critical apparatus and the choice of the “surface manuscript”, we propose an essay of edition of the Dialogo, followed by a final appendix of commentary notes
