    No full text
Dave Seibold interviews the Boer sisters, Cornie and Ruth, of Spring Lake, Michigan about their memories of living in Grand Haven and the surrounding area. Their grandfather came to Holland, Michigan from the Netherlands with the first VanRaatle group. Their father, John Boer, owned a furniture store in Grand Haven and was a licensed mortician. The sisters recall their early years on Washington Avenue and the days when the family first acquired a telephone, radio, and electricity. Cornie became the first kindergarten teacher for Spring Lake Public Schools and also owned and operated the Spring Haven Farm, located at the northeast corner of Fruitport Road and M-104, where Tennessee Walking Horses were bred. She gives details about her teaching career and some of her students. Ruth's husband Elmore Hoek was a dentist in Grand Haven

Total cholesterol concentrations of the muscles in castrated Boer goats

    No full text
Goat meat is an important source of animal protein and Boer goats are the most widespread breed of meat goats. Cholesterol in meat is a potential cause of human disease and little is known about the cholesterol concentration in different goat muscles. As animals gain bodyweight the amount of cholesterol in their tissues generally increases and can vary for different tissues. Therefore, the aim of this experiment was to determine the effect of slaughter weight and muscle type on total cholesterol concentrations in three muscles (longissimus thoracic, infraspinatus and biceps femoris) taken from castrated male Boer goats in Australia. The goats were grazed on a mixture of native pasture and Rhodes grass (Chloris gayana) and had access to lucerne and commercial goat pellets (CP 18%; ME 12.3 MJ/kg DM). The muscles were dissected from 24 goats slaughtered in groups of 4 or 5 animals at 30, 45, 60, 75 and 90 kg liveweight. Total cholesterol concentrations were then determined using high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Total cholesterol concentrations decreased (P < 0.01) with an increase in slaughter weight for the longissimus thoracic, infraspinatus and biceps femoris muscles. Significant differences (P < 0.01) were recorded in the total cholesterol concentrations for the three muscles studied. The average total cholesterol concentrations ranged from 55 to 60 mg/100 g for the longissimus thoracic, 69 to 88 mg/100g for infraspinatus and 65 to 82 mg/100 g for the biceps femoris muscles. These results are important for consumers of goat meat as total cholesterol concentrations vary between different muscles taken from animals slaughtered at different weights and the concentrations are higher in muscles taken from lighter and younger animals. Therefore, health conscious consumers of meat, concerned about the cholesterol content of their diet, should consume meat from the longissimus thoracic muscles of heavier or older goats. The Boer in the African writings of Stuart Cloete

    No full text
It was the purpose of this study to determine those characteristics and qualities of the Boer, the Afrikaner, as set forth in Cloete's works, which serve to set the Boer apart and make him unique to Africa- those characteristics which perhaps account for his ability to survive despite the hostile environment which he found in Southern Africa. The data for this study were obtained by a careful reading of five novels, a collection of African stories, two non-fiction accounts, one biographical and one descriptive, and one magazine article by Stuart Cloete, all dealing directly with the Boer. Several other novels by Cloete yielded interesting sidelights or contrasts to the Boer but dealt primarily with Congo, Portuguese East Africa and Rhodesia. An examination of biographical material concerning the author and his works proved valuable in supplying information as supporting evidence. With very few exceptions the bulk of this study comes from the novels themselves. A careful analysis of the works studied revealed the following: 1. The Boer's strong religious convictions gave him a faith which armed him against many of life's adversities. 2. His belief in the Bible as the infallible Word of God influenced his concept of science, history, astronomy, and law. Such belief gave rise to his idea that the Boers were a chosen people, and all others were heathen. 3. The Boer despised innovations as irreligious, and accepted the land as God's gift to his chosen people. 4. The Boer respected his land, and accepted the isolation which it required of him as a part of stewardship. 5. His isolation, in turn, caused the Boer to learn to live extremely close to nature, thus preparing him to survive life on the veld. 6. The Boer had a robust physique combined with a tenacious nature which eventually resulted in his fighting to hold the lands and property he felt his from God. 7. The Boer was a good friend, but a formidable enemy. 8. His creativity allowed him to devise what necessities he wished and his nature allowed him to do without those things he could not devise. 9. The trek taught the Boer how to survive the worst of southern Africa's environment, the climate, the geographical features, and hostile tribes and animals. 10. Continual encroachment by English and tribesmen taught the Boers that the only solution to independence was to move on, and when further movement was impossible, to fight for his rights. 11. Since God was the only authority of the Boer, he refused to yield to any other authority
