    No full text
Heute ist der letzte Tag vom Rest deines Lebens is an autobiographical graphic novel by the Austrian author Ulli Lust. Ulli, who is a rebellious seventeen-year old “punk” girl and the protagonist of the book, went for a hitchhiking trip across Italy. Although Ulli enjoyed the journey and the new sense of freedom, she also ran into many difficulties. Italy is depicted as a male-dominant society, where women are regarded as sexual objects. During her trip Ulli had to face molestations, sexual assaults and even rape. Some of the comic’s most dramatic pages represent the effects of violence on the protagonist, such as feelings of shame and nightmares. This article focuses on the verbal and graphic  representation of a trauma. With the support of trauma studies, I will analyze the sequence of images representing rape and argue that this is an illustration of a "post-traumatic stress disorder". Usually narrating a traumatic event represents a great challenge, because of the incommunicable and unutterable nature of traumas. I will argue that comics can overcome the difficulties of narrating a traumatic event thanks to the combined use of text and images

Ulli beier, Obotunde Ijimere and Theopaneia in the imprisonment of Obatala

Ulli Beier's attachment to the arts and the peoples of Nigeria is in itself unique. His choices, in association, research and artistic efforts portray this in an unequivocal manner. Obotunde Ijimere, another of Beier's creations, is the author of The Imprisonment of Obatala. This study examines the posture and the context in which Beier perceives the Yoruba, his involvement with the people's theopanic visions and the significance of the experiences to his work in Nigeria

The calculation of observables at low energies in QCD requires non-perturbative methods since the energy-dependent coupling constant is large there. Monte-Carlo simulations of lattice gauge theory are well-suited for this task. Perturbative methods can be used to determine observables at high energies, because the coupling constant is small there. The ALPHA collaboration has the aim to connect the low and high energy regimes of QCD. The Schrödinger-functional allows for the definition of a coupling constant, whose energy dependence can be determined non-perturbatively with the help of Monte-Carlo simulations of lattice gauge theory with high numerical precision. The calculation of Lambda parameters and the commonly used coupling constant alpha-MS-bare requires perturbative relations at high energies. In the present work the two-loop coefficient of the expansion of the Schrödinger-functional coupling into the bare lattice coupling of SU(3) Yang Mills theory is calculated. With the help of this coefficient the Lambda parameter of QCD without fermions can be calculated from the numerically determined coupling with systematic errors that are small compared to statistical ones. The second universal coefficient of the Callan-Symanzik beta-function is reproduced in the context of this work in the lattice regularisation. Furthermore the determined two-loop improvement coefficient can be used in the non-perturbative determination of various observables defined within the framework of the Schrödinger-functional

Japan’s New Trade Policy – A Policy Transformation Without Strategy?

    No full text
Japan’s trade policy has undergone major changes in recent years. This policy shift manifests itself in Japan’s turn towards bilateral and plurilateral trade agreements as a new pillar of its trade policy. In this book, the author identifies and analyzes the main driving forces and actors behind this policy change and discusses its potential political and economic ramifications. This book also raises the question on why Japan has failed to conduct a comprehensive and transparent evaluation of its new trade policy. The author draws on 25 expert interviews with policy makers, bureaucrats and other experts on Japanese trade policy to unveil deep insights into the complex process of trade policy-making in Japan.<br
