No full textFor over one hundred years the Stefano manuscript was a private document in the possession of the Baccich family and descendants. It told a story of the 1875 Stefano shipwreck as narrated by the shipwreck survivor and the founding family patriarch Miho Baccich. In these circumstances the question of authorship of the manuscript was immaterial and did not arise as an issue. However, with the publication of the manuscript the author‟s name, or names, need to be formally attributed to it. It turns out that this is not such a clear-cut matter.
As we shall see, all informed sources attributed the authorship, and the ownership, of the manuscript to Miho Baccich. But the manuscript itself was written by Canon Stjepan Skurla – a priest from Miho‟s hometown of Dubrovnik. The question then arises: should Skurla also be considered as an author of the manuscript, or, even as the sole author (as some would have it)
Mechanical modeling of bend sensors exploited to measure human joint movements
No full textFlexibility, lightness, wearability and cheapness are the most important features for a successful adoption of bend sensors, being they fundamental elements to realize systems able to convert static positions and movements into electrical signals. Even though these sensors have been employed for many different applications, the focal aspect of their mechanical modeling is still not adequately considered. For such a reason the aim of this paper is to fill a lack concerning the method of bend sensors mechanical characterization and modeling. La France colma una lacuna grave nella critica d’arte con una solida monografia in lingua inglese che prende in esame tutte le opere e i documenti di questo pittore. Stefano Colonna giudica positivamente il libro, pubblicato da Leo Olschki, limitandosi a sottolineare che alcune opere, inserite come autografe dall’autore, presentino differenti qualità.

Total mesorectal excision for surgical treatment of rectal cancer
No full textAbstract: Background and Objectives: The aim of our study was to retrospectively evaluate the results of 2 groups of patients admitted and treated for rectal cancer.
Methods: One hundred and fifty-one patients were available for evaluation. Eighty (group A) were radically operated with the standard technique; 71 (group B) underwent total mesorectal excision (TME). Groups were similar according to demographics, staging, and pathological data. Mean follow-up was 73.5 months.
Results: No operative mortality was observed. Complications were 15% in group A and 32% in group B. Local recurrence rates were 41.2% in group A and 12.6% in group B. Distant metastases occurred in 21.2% and 7.6%, respectively, in groups A and B. Cancer-related mortality was 62.5% in the non-TME group and 19.5% in the TME group. Overall 5-year survival rates were 32.4% in group A and 70.5% in group B. Disease-free survival rates were 25% in group A and 62.3% in group B.
Conclusions: TME appears to lower the incidence of cancer-related mortality, with a higher incidence of postoperative complications. Further studies need to be done to assess the real benefits of TME in the surgical treatment of rectal cancer

He has been responsible for overseeing AAA operations, including the development and commercialization of the current portfolio of diagnostic and therapeutic molecular nuclear medicine products, and listing AAA on Nasdaq (stock symbol: AAAP). Prior to founding the company in 2002, he worked as a physicist at the Centre for Advanced Studies, Research and Development, or CRS4, in Italy. During his 6-year tenure with CRS4, he headed a team of engineers working on different international research projects in the field of energy production and nuclear waste transmutation. Before working at CRS4, and alongside his appointment at CRS4, he worked with Physics Nobel Laureate Carlo Rubbia at The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the world’s largest research laboratory for particle physics, in Geneva, Switzerland. He actively participated in the development of CERN’s Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) method. He is the author of numerous scientific papers. A Sentence Structure-based Approach to Unsupervised Author Identification
No full textAssessing whether two documents were written by the same author is a crucial task, especially in the Internet age, with possible applications to philology and forensics.
The problem has been tackled in the literature by exploiting frequency-based approaches, numeric techniques or writing style analysis. Focusing on this last perspective, this paper proposes a novel technique that takes into account the structure of sentences, assuming that it is strictly related to the author's writing style. Specifically, a (collection of) text(s) in natural language written by a given author is translated into a set of First-Order Logic descriptions, and a model of the author's writing habits is obtained as the result of clustering these descriptions. Then, if an overlapping exists between the models of a known author and of an unknown one, the conclusion can be drawn that they are the same person. Among the advantages of this approach, it does not need a training phase, and performs well also on short texts and/or small collections
