Mechanical modeling of bend sensors exploited to measure human joint movements
No full textFlexibility, lightness, wearability and cheapness are the most important features for a successful adoption of bend sensors, being they fundamental elements to realize systems able to convert static positions and movements into electrical signals. Even though these sensors have been employed for many different applications, the focal aspect of their mechanical modeling is still not adequately considered. For such a reason the aim of this paper is to fill a lack concerning the method of bend sensors mechanical characterization and modeling. Advanced characterization of piezoresistive sensors for human body movement tracking
No full textDue to their pliability, sensitivity and cheapness, piezoresistive sensors can be usefully adopted to recover joint bend angles in human body movement tracking. After providing quasi-static and dynamic electrical characterization of piezoresistive sensors, the authors develop a simple and accurate RLC model fitted on sensor electrical response under fast deformation and relaxation movements, which allows to predict the actual device behavior in tracking body fast movements

No full textSurgical management and prognostic factors of hilar cholongiocarcinoma: experience with 68 patients at the Ghent university Hospital
No full textFrom may 1992 to december 2006, 68 patients with Klatskin tumor were evaluated in our institution. Clinicopathological data were analyzed and univariate and multivariate analyses carriede out to determine significant prognostic factors affecting morbidity and mortality. Mean age was of 53,4+/-12 years. M/F ratio was of 46/22. After a median FU of 28 months (1-84), 11/68 (16%) of patients were non respectable (group A) and treated with palliative transtumoral stenting. The others 57 patients (group B) underwent surgery : n=5 for BYsmuth type II; n=20 for type IIIa; n=23 for type IIIb and n=9 for type IV. Median survival was of 6 months in non resected patients vs. 32 months in group B (p = 0,001). R0 resection was achived in 41/57 (72%) patients. Median survival was of 48 m in R0 vs. 10 m in R1-2 resection (p = 0,003). In-hospital mortality was of 3.5%. Overall morbidity rate was of 3.5%. Factors related to a shorter survival were identified as: Lymphatic and perineural invasiveness, R1-2 resection, AJCC stage, overall 3 & 5 y patient survival was of 45% and 22% respectively. Surgical approach for Klatskin tumor is the only chance for long-term survival with acceptable surgical mortality rate. In our experience, radical oncological surgery was possible in more than 70% of cases leading to a significant survival. Perineural and lymphatic involvement combined to a R1-R2 resection correlated with shorter survival

No full textThis study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)
