Seattle, Washington, United StatesThis accession is part of the Washington State Jewish Archives.
Mr. Shucklin relates his family history as well as his own early life in Alaska and Seattle. His father came from Lithuania seeking an uncle, Jacob Cohen, in the West. Sam Shucklin had several ventures in the Seattle clothing business, was married in 1907, and then tried the clothing business in Alaska beginning with Fairbanks circa 1910 and Anchorage from 1917-1918. He eventually became established in a wholesale business in Alaska with headquarters in Seattle.
The second cassette includes the account of Mr. Shucklin's mother's family, the Garfinkels, but concentrates on the work of his grandmother, Goldie Shucklin, in establishing and running the Ladies Montefiore Society, a direct relief agency, and the Jewish Chapel. He also discusses at length his involvement in the military, Pearl Harbor, and Japanese-Americans in Seattle after the attack. Tape 2, side 2 describes Gerald Shucklin's schooling, his college years, his impressions of discrimination against Jews, and his early legal career. To request a high resolution or uncompressed reproduction, or to obtain permission to use any portion of this item, contact the University of Washington Libraries, Special Collections.
