Thin-gap bubble columns have been recently considered as photobioreactors for the intensification of culture conditions to achieve high volumetric productivities. In the present study, a thin gap bubble column (4 mm) is characterized with the objective to cultivate high concentrations of microalgae (42 g/L). Such cultures have a shear-thinning behaviour, which is mimicked here with CMC and XG aqueous solutions. Experimental (Shadowgraphy) and numerical (CFD) study is performed on isolated bubbles rising in this column. The Volume of Fluid method allows satisfying prediction of bubble terminal velocity, shape and trajectory. A dimensionless correlation is developed to predict drag coefficient of isolated bubbles in non-Newtonian fluid for confined conditions. Global hydrodynamics, as well as gas-liquid mass transfer, are also characterized. The emphasis is on gas holdup, flow regime transitions, mixing time and volumetric gas-liquid mass transfer. The results are presented in terms of confinement, rheological parameters and sparger effects. They show that the gas holdup in non-Newtonian liquids is greater than that in water and that the regime transitions for non-Newtonian liquids occur at slightly lower superficial gas velocities than in the case of water. Mixing in non-Newtonian liquids is quite poor particularly in the homogeneous regime compared to low viscosity Newtonian liquids. Finally, kLa results show that kLa decreases with the increase in the capillary diameter of the sparger and decreases with the increase of apparent viscosity. Compared with classical bubble columns, the value of kLa in the confined bubble column is lower, both for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids
This research concerns the characterization of global and local hydrodynamics and gas-liquid transfer in a confined bubble column (4 mm thick) intended for intensified photobioreactor cultivation (high cell concentration). The issue of biofilms that develop on the photobioreactor walls is also treated. The particular hydrodynamics in this confined bubble column is characterized for three fluids of increasing viscosity to reflect the change in rheological behavior of the microalgal culture. One of the main results of this study is that the regime transitions appear for much lower gas superficial velocities than in a conventional column. The gas-liquid transfer in confined bubble column is less efficient than in conventional bubble columns even if the inorganic carbon does not seem to be limiting for microalgae growth, even at low gas superficial velocities. A study of the local hydrodynamics is also carried out to characterize the liquid phase and the gas phase, highlighting the presence of two transition regimes and allowing to point out the effect of the different zones of the flow on the velocity profiles and their fluctuations. Finally, the last point of this study is to find strategies to limit the development of biofilm on the walls by using bubbling sequences
Thin-gap bubble column photobioreactor : hydrodynamics, gas-liquid mass transfer, bubble influence on wall shear stress and production performance
Thin-gap bubble column photobioreactors (PBRs), typically with a few millimeters’ gaps, theoretically offer the potential to increase volumetric biomass productivity. In the context of this thesis, a comprehensive characterization of both global and local hydrodynamics, as well as gas-liquid mass transfer, is conducted within a confined bubble column having a 2 mm thickness and at high viscosity of the liquid phase, changing from Newtonian to non-Newtonian shear-thinning behavior. The high concentration of microalgae Chlorella vulgaris (≈ 42 g.L-1) is mimicked using aqueous solutions of 50 wt% glycerol and xanthan gum at 0.5 and 1 g.L-1. The objective is to better understand the influence of confinement, injection, and rheological properties of the liquid phase on global hydrodynamic parameters, such as gas holdup, flow regimes, mixing time, and gas-liquid mass transfer. To complete the global study, a characterization of the gaseous phase is performed. The hydrodynamics near the walls are also characterized to identify the contribution of bubble dynamics to wall shear stress. Finally, the knowledge acquired from model fluids experiments is used in culture experiments to optimize the production of microalgal biomass. This was achieved by using this intensified PBR in a continuous culture mode with Chlorella vulgaris
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
