Backwater Flooding in San Marcos, TX from the Blanco River
Large sections of San Marcos, TX were flooded in Oct. 1998, May 2015, and Oct. 2015. Much of the flooding in Oct. 1998 and Oct. 2015 was produced by overbank flooding of San Marcos River and its tributaries by spills from upstream dams. The May 2015 flooding was almost entirely produced by backwater flooding from the Blanco River whose confluence is approximately 2.2 miles southeast of downtown. We use the stage height of the Blanco River to generate maps of the areas of San Marcos that are lower than the flood peaks and compare those results with data for the observed extent of flooding in San Marcos. Our preliminary results suggest that the flooding occurred at locations more than 20 feet lower than the maximum stage height of the Blanco River at San Marcos gage (08171350). This suggest that the datum for either gage 08171350 or 08170500 (San Marcos River at San Marcos) or both are incorrect. There are plans for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to construct a Blanco River bypass that will divert Blanco River floodwaters approximately 2 miles farther downstream, but the $60 million price makes its implementation problematic

A thorough description of the iconography found in the “White Mantle”, a piece belonging to the textile collection from Museum of archeology and anthropology at the National University of San Marcos, allows us to use clothing attire for distinguishing clearly the gender identity of the anthropomorphic personages represented. On that basis some clues about the role of feminine images in the worldview of Paracas culture can be suggested. Also embroidering techniques and chromatic combinations are examined. Finally, an interpretation of the figures of the mantle as representing a ritual scene is suggested

Relationship between anti-müllerian hormone and ovarian reserve in Brahman and Blanco Orejinegro donor cows
The aim of this study was to compare the levels of anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) in female Brahman and Blanco Orejinegro oocyte donors and its relationship with ovarian reserve and embryo production in vitro. Oocytes were obtained from 42 Brahman and 38 Blanco Orejinegro females by ultrasound-guided ovarian puncture (OPU). Blood samples were collected prior to OPU for determination of serum AMH concentrations. The oocytes and embryos were cultured individually for each donor. The results showed that serum AMH concentrations were 0.78 ± 0.34 ng/ml (0.09-1.89 ng/ml) for Brahman cows and 0.72 ± 0.32 ng/ml (0.13-1.19 ng/ml) for Blanco Orejinegro cows. The correlation between the concentration of AMH and the number of follicles was r=0.77 and r=0.74 for the Brahman and Blanco Orejinegro cows, respectively, as well as a positive correlation between the concentration of AMH and the number of blastocysts (r=0.55 and r=0.6, respectively). It is concluded that the Brahman donors have a higher concentration of AMH and a greater ovarian reserve than the Blanco Orejinegro donors; however, a higher correlation was found between the concentration of AMH and the number of blastocysts in Blanco Orejinegro donors than in Brahman.
Courageous women in media: Marcos and censorship in the Philippines
When Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos declared Martial Law in 1972, press freedom became the first casualty in the country that once boasted of being the 'freest in Asia'. Printing presses, newspaper offices, television and radio stations were raided and padlocked. Marcos was especially fearful of the press and ordered the arrest of journalists whom he charged with conspiring with the 'Left'. Pressured into lifting martial law after nearly 10 years, Marcos continued to censor the media, often demanding publishers to sack journalists whose writing he disapproved of. Ironically, he used the same 'subversive writings' as proof to Western observers that freedom of the press was alive and well under his dictatorship. This article looks at the writings of three female journalists from the Bulletin Today. The author examines the work of Arlene Babst, Ninez Cacho-Olivares, and Melinda de Jesus and how they traversed the dictator's fickle, sometimes volatile, reception of their writing. Interviewed is Ninez Cacho-Olivare, who used humour and fairy tales in her popular column to criticise Marcos, his wife, Imelda, and even the military that would occasionally 'invite' her for questioning. She explains an unwritten code of conduct between Marcos and female journalists that served to shield them from total political repression
