    First record of Pelobates syriacus (Anura, Amphibia) in the Early Pleistocene of Italy

    Spadefoot toads (Pelobatidae, Anura) are rare in the Italian fossil record, being previously recorded only in the late Pliocene of Arondelli (Piedmont Region, northwestern Italy) and in the early Pleistocene of Pirro Nord P21 (Apulia, southeastern Italy). Here we describe for the first time abundant fossil remains of Pelobates syriacus from the lower Pleistocene fissure of Pirro Nord P13 (Apulia, southeastern Italy). These fossils shed new light on the palaeobiogeographical history of Pelobates in the Apennine Peninsula and are the first fossil evidence in Italy for P. syriacus, which currently lives in the southeastern Balkan Peninsula, Caucasus and the Middle East. This extralimital Italian occurrence suggests that P. syriacus has good dispersal abilities, when favourable conditions exist. Dispersal routes to reach the Apennine Peninsula during the early Pleistocene may have been favoured by a low level of the Adriatic Sea during a cold interval, furnishing a new habitat suitable for P. syriacus

    MIS 5 environmental and climatic reconstruction in northeastern Iberia using the small-vertebrate assemblage from the terrestrial sequence of Cova del Rinoceront (Castelldefels, Barcelona)

    The habitat weighting method, chorotype classification and the bioclimatic model, as well as the Simpson diversity index, are applied to the small-vertebrate assemblage of Cova del Rinoceront (Castelldefels, Barcelona) in order to reconstruct the environmental and climatic fluctuations that are reflected in the MIS 5 sequence of the cave. The small-vertebrate data analysed are from Unit 1 of the sequence, which comprises three MIS 5 layers (III to I). They allow one cool and two warm episodes to be identified within the section. The warm episodes are related with open-woodland formations and temperatures higher than at present in the area, though in layer III our data suggest moist conditions, with the precipitation higher than today, which could probably be related with the beginning of MIS 5e. Layer II is associated with drier conditions, with precipitation lower than nowadays, which could probably be related with MIS 5c. By contrast, layer I is associated with open woodland formations, but with cooler and relatively humid conditions than today to judge by the temperature and precipitation data obtained. This could probably be related with MIS 5b. Our results are consistent with the available chronological, large-mammal, bird and palaeobotanical datasets for this upper part of the sequence.     Environmental and climatic context of neanderthal occupation in southwestern Europe during MIS3 inferred from the small-vertebrate assemblages

    According to pollen analysis, Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS3, ca. 60-30ka) is characterized in southern Europe by dynamic alternations of forest vs. semi-arid area expansion in accordance with the warming and cooling, respectively, of the sea-surface temperatures. It is in this context of rapid fluctuations that the Neanderthal occupation of the northeastern Iberian Peninsula took place. This paper sets forth a synthesis of the previously published environmental and climatic data obtained from the small vertebrates (herpetofauna and small mammals) of the Neanderthal localities of Cova del Gegant, Abric Romani, l'Arbreda cave, Canyars and Teixoneres. Using habitat weighting and mutual climatic range methods to reconstruct the environment, temperature and rainfall, the Middle Paleolithic occupations in northeastern Iberia are closely related to the presence of woodlands, irrespective of the climatic conditions. However, there are differences in the percentage of forest formations from the south to the northeast of Iberia. Southern Iberia (Gorham's cave) was much more forested than the northern parts (A. Romaní, l'Arbreda, Canyars, Teixoneres, C. Gegant). This observation coincides with the status of the southernmost Iberian Peninsula as a climatic refuge, where Neanderthals survived until ca. 28kaBP. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd and INQUA

    Small vertebrates from the upper Miocene hominoid-bearing site of Udabno, Georgia

    The locality of Udabno, Georgia, preserves material referred to the hominoid primate Dryopithecus. In this study, we describe the microvertebrate fauna from the site, which includes fishes (Scardinius sp., Carassius sp.), anurans (Pelophylax sp.), squamates (Lacertidae indet., Ophidia indet.), insectivores (Schizogalerix sinapensis, Turiasorex cf. pierremeini), and rodents (Byzantinia pikermiensis, Hansdebruijnia erksinae, Vasseuromys pannonicus). The association of two rodents, the cricetid B. pikermiensis and the murid H. erksinae, constrains the age of the Udabno fauna more precisely than previous studies. Byzantinia pikermiensis was first recognized at the site of Pikermi, Chomateri, and later recovered in other sites from Turkey, including the hominid-bearing site of Çorakyerler. The murid H. erksinae was also described from Çorakyerler in Turkey. Therefore, the presence of these rodents at Udabno indicates that the fauna postdates late Vallesian faunas such as Biodrak, Greece, and Bayraktepe II, Turkey, which are characterized by the association of the more archaic species Byzantinia nikosi and Progonomys cathalai.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.
