Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Identifying the potential of the North-West planning region in Bulgaria to create innovation-based incubators
Traditionally, innovations have been in the focus of researchers since their introduction, as a concept by Schumpeter, to the present days. In the last decade, these trends have intensified, and more and more researchers are directing their research into the innovation field. The connections of innovations with the results of companies, the success of innovations, the environment for innovations, etc. are investigated. The main goal of the present study is to reveal the potential of the North-West Planning Region in Bulgaria to create an innovation-based incubator/s, that will be part of the innovation environment, support companies in their innovation activity and thus contribute for economic growth in the region. The main methods used are the office survey, statistical methods /collection of statistical information/, trend method, factor analysis and scenario method. Based on the collected statistical information and its secondary processing, certain regularities and trends have been deduced for the potential for creating innovation-based incubators. Through the method of scenarios, the potential usefulness of such structural elements of the innovation environment for increasing the innovativeness of the companies of the region has been determined
“The Middle Class”: Between “Production” and “Consumption” of Life Chances.
Paper presents, on the background of a discussion on prerequisites for “classness” and socio-historical construction of “class”, a conceptual framework for sociological understanding of possibility conditions for middle class emergence and evolvement as a “producer” of life chances. Several socio-economic processes are discussed that engender the middle class’ shifts towards life chances “consumption” and back to their “production”
Applied aspects of investments in innovation in Bulgarian companies
Investment and innovation have traditionally been seen as interconnected areas of activity. Clarifying this relationship in the business practice of Bulgarian companies is an interesting task, from a scientific and applied point of view. The intensity of innovation resulting from the dynamics of the global economy also implies pressure on companies to make more and more investments in new products, new technologies, new working methods and managements, etc. At the same time, not all innovative technologies and/or products are characterized by the necessary cost-effectiveness. This requires companies to apply appropriate methods for assessing the profitability of investments in innovation, as well as methods for assessing the risk of such investments. The purpose of this article is to investigate the practice of Bulgarian companies (based on a limited range of researched but completely randomly distributed) in applying approaches and methods for assessing the effectiveness of investments in innovation. To achieve the main objective, methods such as: literary review, observation, survey, two-dimensional statistical distribution, analysis and synthesis of primary information, comparative analysis, expert evaluation, etc. are used. In conclusion, some summaries of good practices and recommendations for increasing the effectiveness of these processes in the practice of companies are given
Methodological Aspects of Management of Portfolios of Investment Projects for Real Assets of Business Organizations
The article aims to present the potential of the classical portfolio theory and the possibilities for its application in the formation and selection of a portfolio of investment projects for investment in real assets. For this purpose, it reviews and summarizes the views of various authors on key concepts, such as investment, project, investment project, etc. The essential conceptual characteristics of portfolio theory are defined in terms of its methodological and mathematical toolbox and subsequently adapted to a conceptual model (methodological framework) for selection of a portfolio of investment projects for real assets and its optimization according to key criteria set by the management. Finally, its draws conclusions regarding the main advantages and the related constraints of the methodological model
