    E.M. Jellinek: The Hungarian connection

    No full text
This is the second in a series of papers depicting the mostly undocumented life of E.M. Jellinek. This paper establishes the connection between Jellinek Morton, a well-known figure in Hungary in the early part of the 20th Century, and E.M. Jellinek, one of the founders of alcohol studies. Newly found documents in Hungary and at the Rutgers Center of Alcohol Studies Library and Archives provide compelling evidence of this connection and shed some light on the mysterious circumstances of his 1920 disappearance from Hungary. The information in these papers was first presented at the 36th Annual Substance Abuse Librarians and Information Specialists (SALIS) Conference on May 1st, 2014, by seven presenters in a panel entitled “Mystery and speculations: Piecing together E.M. Jellinek’s redemption.”Peer reviewe

High Field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance In Transition Metal Substituted Bafe2as2

    No full text
We report high field 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements on Co and Cu substituted BaFe2As2 single crystals displaying same structural/magnetic transition T0?128 K. From our anisotropy studies in the paramagnetic state, we strikingly found virtually identical quadrupolar splitting and consequently the quadrupole frequency νQ?2.57(1) MHz for both compounds, despite the claim that each Cu delivers 2 extra 3d electrons in BaFe2As2 compared to Co substitution. These results allow us to conclude that a subtle change in the crystallographic structure, particularly in the Fe-As tetrahedra, must be the most probable tuning parameter to determine T0 in this class of superconductors rather than electronic doping. Furthermore, our NMR data around T0 suggest coexistence of tetragonal/paramagnetic and orthorhombic/antiferromagnetic phases between the structural and the spin density wave magnetic phase transitions, similarly to what was reported for K-doped BaFe2As2 [Urbano et al., Phys. Electrical Resistivity Under Extreme Conditions In The Ce 3ir4sn13 Heavy Fermion Compound

    No full text
We have performed measurements of temperature dependent electrical resistivity ρ(T) under pressures up to 27 kbar and down to 0.1 K on single crystals of the Ce3Ir4Sn13 heavy fermion compound. At ambient pressure (P=0) we have identified in the ρ(T) data interesting features associated with the presence of crystalline field effects, magnetic correlations, Kondo single impurity scattering and, possibly, a low temperature structural phase transition. All these features were mapped as a function of pressure which allowed us to construct a pressure-temperature phase diagram with these temperature scales. We have also carried out measurements of ρ(T) as a function of magnetic fields up to H=8 T and the important temperature scales in ρ(T) were followed with field. Enlightened also by temperature dependent specific heat experiments we discuss the possible microscopic origins of the features found in our ρ(T) data. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.177132135Remeika, J.P., Espinosa, G.P., Cooper, A.S., Barz, H., Rowell, J.M., McWhan, D.B., Vandenberg, J.M., Thomlinson, W., (1980) Solid State Commun., 34, p. 923Hodeau, J.L., Chenavas, J., Marezio, M., Remeika, J.P., (1980) Solid State Commun., 36, p. 839Agüero, O., (2007), Ph.D. thesis, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas, SP, BrazilZhong, G., Lei, X., Mao, J., (2009) Phys. Integrated difference: Counteracting exclusion of migrants through intercultural spatial planning and governance in Athens

    No full text
This research-and-design research addresses the influence of urban conditions on social conditions (and vice versa) and explores interdisciplinary alternatives. In the context of Athens (Greece), spatial planning and its governance support social exclusion of migrants, which is expressed through conflicts with native residents. The project experiments with alleviating these effects by establishing spatial planning as active agent of integration. The main aim of the research is to develop an appropriate strategy in areas with migrants, by re-adjusting the principles of urban space. Instead of providing one fixed solution, the project will design flexible initiatives that help the community achieve the desirable outcome. The methodology of this urban integration can be replicable, provided that it is adjusted for similar urban and social contexts

Probing The Localized To Itinerant Behavior Of The 4f Electron In Cein 3-xsn X By Gd3 + Electron Spin Resonance

    No full text
The CeIn 3-xSn x cubic heavy fermion system presents an antiferromagnetic transition at T N=10 K, for x=0, that decreases continuously down to 0 K upon Sn substitution at a critical concentration of x c0.65. In the vicinity of T N→0 the system shows non-Fermi liquid behavior due to antiferromagnetic critical fluctuations. For a high Sn content, x2.2, intermediate valence effects are present. In this work we show that Gd3 +-doped electron spin resonance (ESR) probes a change in the character of the Ce 4f electron, as a function of Sn substitution. The Gd3 + ESR results indicate a transition of the Ce 4f spin behavior from localized to itinerant. Near the quantum critical point, on the antiferromagnetic side of the magnetic phase diagram, both localized and itinerant behaviors coexist. © 2012 American Physical Society.8612Stewart, G.R., (1984) Rev. Antiferromagnetic exchange weakening in the TbRhIn 5 intermetallic system with Y-substitution

    No full text
We report measurements of the temperature dependent specific heat and magnetic susceptibility in single crystals of the series of intermetallic compounds Tb 1−x Y x RhIn 5 (nominal concentrations x = 0.0, 0.15, 0.3, 0.4,0.5, 0.7). A mean field approximation to simulate the macroscopic properties along the series has been used.Neutron diffraction data in powdered samples of Tb 0.6 Y 0.4 RhIn 5 and Tb 0.6 La 0.4 RhIn 5 reveal antiferromagnetic(AFM) propagation vector k = ⎡ 2 0 2 ⎤ with the magnetic moments oriented along the tetragonal c axis or canted from this axis, respectively for Y and La-substitutions. Considering both the simulations of the magnetic exchange and neutron diffraction data, we discuss the role of combined effects of crystalline electric field (CEF) perturbations and dilution in the evolution of magnetic properties with Y and La contents. In particular, we found negligible variations of the Bnm parameters along the Y series. The decrease of T N with x is fully dominated by magnetic dilution effects.Fil: Amaral, R.P.. Psycholinguistic Characteristics of the Discourse with a «Colour Black» Component (based on E.M. Remarque’s works)

    No full text
In recent decades, colour vocabulary has been actively studied by the Ukrainian and foreign scientists. Modern Linguistics has significant achievements in research of this issue, however, some of its aspects, in particular, psycholinguistic characteristics of the discourse with a colour element, still remain relevant and poorly researched. Colour has always played an important role in artistic discourse. The names of individual writers are inextricably associated with certain coloronyms, which is a so-called marker in their work. One example of this phenomenon is the colour black, that is dominant in the discourse of E.M. Remarque, which, given the mostly dramatic themes of the author’s novels, is quite expected, especially if the fact is considered through the prism of Psycholinguistics. The purpose of the given scientific investigation is to provide psycholinguistic characteristics of the discourse with the «black colour» component in E.M. Remarque’s works and to identify the impact it has on the reader in the process of perceiving the outstanding author’s texts. Implementation of the stated tasks of research involved the integrational usage of general scientific methods (such as description, induction, deduction), as well as the analysіs of dictionary definitions, current native and foreign psycholinguistic sources; contextual and structural-thematic analysis; modelling and classification of actual material. The results of the analysis of the Remarque’s discourse with the «black colour» component allow us drawing the following conclusion: the coloronym «schwarz» in E.M. Remarque’s is characterised by a wide semantic content, wherein the black colour is used by the writer both to determine the colour of the described object neutrally and to convey figurative negative semantics. Lexemes denoting black, in their direct meaning, indicate the colour of the depicted object directly. Using the colour nomination «schwarz» in symbolic meaning, the author resorts to «painting» in dark natural phenomena, which are not characterised by black; depicts dishonest and illegal actions; demonstrates negative attitude towards people. Using the specified colour nomination as the colour of clothing, objects, buildings, as well as emotions, experiences and feelings, non-verbal means of intensification the semantics of “black” – the designation of poses, gestures, facial expressions, body movements the author demonstrates not only his personal attitude towards the characters of his novels, but by focusing the consciousness of the reader on their difficult psychological and physical state, he encourages to rethink the causes and consequences of their actions.
