Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Gaining value from smart meter data : power quality and outage event analysis
"Electric utility companies are making significant investments in smart grid technologies to improve the way power is generated and delivered to customers. Investments such as the replacement of electromechanical meters with smart meters has provided several benefits including more accurate electricity bills and the ability to remotely connect or disconnect service. In addition to these benefits, smart meters can also be used to address the lack of visibility into the electric distribution system. While many utilities have visibility at substations through supervisory control and data acquisition systems, much of the distribution system beyond the substation remains unmonitored. The objective of this thesis is to show how utilities can gain more visibility into the distribution system by analyzing smart meter data. Smart meter outage events, when integrated into outage management systems, can help utilities locate outages faster and restore power to customers. In this thesis, smart meter outage events are compared with historical outage incidents from an outage management system. The results of the comparison show that there are several challenges to overcome before these events can be integrated into outage management systems. These challenges include processing momentary smart meter outages and ensuring that the electric model is correct. Smart meters can also be used to identify power quality issues such as drastic changes in voltage levels. An average voltage over a five-day period was obtained for 700,000 smart meters and roughly 1% had a voltage above the acceptable tolerance range. Many of these issues were caused by the failure of a distribution transformer or voltage regulator. We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Programmable and reconfigurable strain-powered micro-data-loggers based on linear piezo-floating-gate injectors
This thesis describes the design, implementation and testing of self-powered, large dynamic-range, micro-data-logger that can be used for sensing, computing and non-volatile data storage of mechanical-strain statistics. At the core of the proposed design is a linear floating-gate injector that can achieve more than 13 bits of precision in sensing, signal integration and non-volatile storage. The injectors are self-powered by the piezoelectric transducers that convert mechanical energy from strain-variations into electrical energy. The first fundamental contribution of this thesis is a novel differential injector topology that is used to measure static-strain by integrating the difference between the L1 measure of the piezoelectric signal generated during the positive and negative strain-cycles. The second fundamental contribution of this thesis is a novel compressive self-powering technique that overcomes the input threshold effect of most self-powered sensors. By using a non-linear impedance circuit at the output of the piezoelectric transducer and by using programmable level-crossing circuit and offset cancellation circuits, the thesis demonstrates an extended self-powering range greater than 40dB. A system-on-chip solution has been designed that integrates the linear floating-gate injectors with high-voltage charge-pumps, digital calibration and digital programming circuits. Extensive experiments with the system-on-chip prototypes fabricated in a 0.5\u3bcm standard CMOS process and piezoelectric material (PZT) have been performed using a bench-top mechanical test setup. An automated programming and calibration of the sensor has been developed comprising of an FPGA and MATLAB interface and the results have been calibrated against standard strain-gauge measurements. This evaluation and test platform is useful for long-term, automated reliability testing of the self-powered piezo-floating-gate sensors as demonstrated in the results presented in this work.Thesis (M.S.)--Michigan State University. Node localization via analyzing multi-path signals in ultrasonic sensor networks
This thesis proposes a novel signal analysis based node localization strategy for sensor networks used in structural health monitoring (SHM) applications. The key idea is to analyze location-dependent multipath signal patterns in inter-node ultrasonic signals, and use machine-learning mechanisms to detect such patterns for accurate node localization on metal substrates on target structures. Majority of the traditional mechanisms rely on radio based Time Delay of Arrival (TDOA), coupled with multilateration, and multiple reference nodes. The proposed mechanism attempts to solve the localization problem in an ultrasonic sensor network (USN), avoiding the use of multiple reference beacon nodes. Instead, it relies on signal analysis and multipath signature classification from a single reference node that periodically transmits ultrasonic localization beacons. The approach relies on a key observation that the ultrasonic signal received at any point on the structure from the reference node, is a superposition of the signals received on the direct path and through all possible multi-paths. It is hypothesized that if the location of the reference node and the substrate properties are known a-priori, it should be possible to train a receiver (source node), to identify its own location by observing the exact signature of the received signal. To validate this hypothesis, steps were taken to develop a TI MSP430 based module for implementing a run-time system from a proposed architecture. Through extensive experimentation within an USN on the 2024 Aluminum substrate, it was demonstrated that localization accuracies up to 92% were achieved in the presence of varying spatial resolutions.Thesis (M.S.)--Michigan State University.
