    Dalit empowerment, narratives and violence: Locating Ambedkar through select films

    In March 2017, the village of Thottiyapati in Tamil Nadu saw Dalit homes being damaged and the members of the community being abused (Vinita 2017). It was the battle for water that led to a fight between the Dalit community of Arunthathiyar and the upper caste Thottinayaykars. In the conflict, it was unclear who the victim and the perpetrator were, with cases filed against members of both the groups for inciting violence and harassment. The Dalit community’s participation in communal violence as a solution to a basic problem like water supply raises questions about the relevance of Ambedkar’s ideas in the context of socio-political empowerment

    Approaches to Improving the Circular Economy Paradigm in E-waste Management in India through Informal–Formal Sector Integration

    India has witnessed a rapid increase in e-waste generation in recent years and is now the fifth largest generator in the world. The concept of “urban mining” implies recovery and utilisation of secondary material from urban waste streams. In India, e-waste recycling has historically been dominated by the informal sector, which, in addition to creating hazardous conditions, is able to recycle only a fraction of the recoverable material due to technology and other limitations. The e-waste Management Rules 2016 introduced the principle of Extended Producer Responsibility that imposed a mandate on manufacturers for ensuring collection and channelisation of e-waste. This was a significant step in the right direction and has improved formal recycling of e-waste. However, the system continues to suffer from unnecessary and damaging competition between the formal and informal sectors. In 2019, the NITI Aayog and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) released the Strategy on Resource Efficiency in the Electrical and Electronic Equipment Sector in collaboration with the EU Resource Efficiency Initiative for India. This chapter, based broadly on the NITI/MeitY Strategy, analyses the obstacles facing improved recycling and outlines an alternative approach that relies on an effective integration between the informal and formal sectors

    C(X) determines X - an inherent theory

    [EN] One of the fundamental problem in rings of continuous function is to extract those spaces for which C(X) determines X, that is to  investigate X and Y such that C(X) isomorphic with C(Y ) implies X homeomorphic with Y. The development started back from Tychonoff who first pointed out inevitability of Tychonoff space in this category of problem. Later S. Banach and M. Stone proved independently with slight variance, that if X is compact Hausdorff space, C(X) also determine X. Their works were maximally extended by E. Hewitt by introducing realcompact spaces and later Melvin Henriksen and Biswajit Mitra solved the problem for locally compact and nearly realcompact spaces.     Wireless Sensor Network for Helicopter Rotor Blade Vibration Monitoring: Requirements Definition and Technological Aspects

    The main rotor accounts for the largest vibration source for a helicopter fuselage and its components. However, accurate blade monitoring has been limited due to the practical restrictions on instrumenting rotating blades. The use of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) for real time vibration monitoring promises to deliver a significant contribution to rotor performance monitoring and blade damage identification. This paper discusses the main technological challenges for wireless sensor networks for vibration monitoring on helicopter rotor blades. The first part introduces the context of vibration monitoring on helicopters. Secondly, an overview of the main failure modes for rotor and blades is presented. Based on the requirements for failure modes monitoring, a proposition for a multipurpose sensor network is presented. The network aims to monitor rotor performance, blade integrity and damage accumulation at three different scales referred to as macro layer, meso layer and micro layer. The final part presents the requirements for WSNs design in relation with sensing, processing, communication, actuation and power supply

    Redox-Responsive Nanocapsules for the Spatiotemporal Release of Miltefosine in Lysosome: Protection against Leishmania

    Leishmaniasis, a vector-borne disease, is caused by intracellular parasite Leishmania donovani. Unlike most intracellular pathogens, Leishmania donovani are lodged in parasitophorous vacuoles and replicate within the phagolysosomes in macrophages. Effective vaccines against this disease are still under development, while the efficacy of the available drugs is being questioned owing to the toxicity for nonspecific distribution in human physiology and the reported drug-resistance developed by Leishmania donovani. Thus, a stimuli-responsive nanocarrier that allows specific localization and release of the drug in the lysosome has been highly sought after for addressing two crucial issues, lower drug toxicity and a higher drug efficacy. We report here a unique lysosome targeting polymeric nanocapsules, formed via inverse mini-emulsion technique, for stimuli-responsive release of the drug miltefosine in the lysosome of macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line. A benign polymeric backbone, with a disulfide bonding susceptible to an oxidative cleavage, is utilized for the organelle-specific release of miltefosine. Oxidative rupture of the disulfide bond is induced by intracellular glutathione (GSH) as an endogenous stimulus. Such a stimuli-responsive release of the drug miltefosine in the lysosome of macrophage RAW 264.7 cell line over a few hours helped in achieving an improved drug efficacy by 200 times as compared to pure miltefosine. Such a drug formulation could contribute to a new line of treatment for leishmaniasis.A.
