A Study of the Expansion of the Fu-Bing 府兵 Military System and the Soldiers Involved in This in Tang-Dynasty Xi-Zhou 西州 Province

Following its destruction of the Qu state of Gaochang 麹氏高昌國 in Zhenguan 貞観 14 (640), the Tang transformed this area into Xi-Zhou province and established it as an important point in the control of the Western Territories and the Silk Road. Following the conquest, the Tang established four Zhechong-fu 折衝府 (district military headquarters) within the new province and implemented the conscription of the local populace to serve as soldiers in the fu-bing system. This paper is an analysis of the actual workings of the fu-bing system and the true status of the soldiers in it via an examination of records found in Turfan. It also highlights specific aspects of the working of the Tang fu-bing system, with particular attention paid to the actual circumstances of the soldiers involved in this system. Among the several points confirmed in this paper are, first, that the four Zhechong-fu were established early in the period of Tang control and that the total soldiers involved in it numbered some three thousand. Second, these soldiers were referred to , as Weishi 衛士 (imperial guards), but they actually served five one-month-long tours of duty in the lookout posts and signal towers within the province rather than in the capital. Third, it may thus be surmised that the duties of these soldiers were less onerous than those of peasant farmers, and that their social status was, moreover, higher than the latter. Recognition of this principle of the separation of soldier and peasant--the soldier and the peasant-farmer did not occupy the same role--makes it possible to redefine the fundamental character of the Tang fu-bing system from this vantage point

[red handwritten label] (HBUM). Paratypes. 6 males, 12 females, same data as for the holotype (male, female in SHNU, rest in HBUM). BL: 5.9–7.3 mm, ED: 0.27–0.32.mm, PL / PW of male: 0.78–0.80, PL / PW of female: 0.75–0.79. Similar to S. grande in most respects, but differs in the following characters: antennal club (Figs 25) relatively stouter; most punctures on head well delimited, connected by weakly confluent traces; apical portion of elytra indistinctly impressed; male profemora (Figs 26) with inner side expanded gradually from base forming an acute angle at apical third, tubercles smaller and sparser; male tibiae (Figs 26) with two widest points forming a blunt and a sharp angle on inner side at about apical 1/5 and apical end respectively; internal sac of aedeagus as in Figs 23, 24. Distribution. China (Anhui). Diagnoses. This species can be easily distinguished from other member of the species complex by its small body size. Etymology. The Latin adjective “ spinatum ” refers to the spined male profemora of the new species. Biological notes. All specimens were collected from a log covered with fungi.Published as part of Tang, Liang & Li, Li-Zhen, 2010, On Scaphidium grande-complex (Coleoptera, Staphylinidae, Scaphidiinae), pp. 65-78 in ZooKeys 43 (43) on pages 70-72, DOI: 10.3897/zookeys.43.447, http://zenodo.org/record/57665

Tang Code, Tang Rite, and Other Manuscripts of Tang Dynasty

In the present paper, the author gives the preliminary reports on three newly found Tang 唐 official documents, pointing out their important value, and offering the all texts for further studies.1. In Tunhuang and Turfan Documents concerning Social and Economic History I. Legal Texts (Tokyo 1978-1980), Professors T. Yamamoto, O. Ikeda, and M. Okano published the joined texts of O. 5098 and O. 8099 from Otani collection. They identified the fragments with the Section on Violence and Robbery of the Tang Code (唐律), and pointed out the article comes from the Yonghui 永徽 or Chuigong 垂拱 Code according to the Zetian 則天 characters used in the Buddhist text on the verso. The author joins another fragment based on an old photograph of the Turfan document preserved in the Lüshun Museum (旅順博物館). The new text contains one different article from the printed text after the Song 宋 dynasty.2. Among the Dunhuang 敦煌 manuscripts in the National Library of China in Beijing, there is a good copy of the Tang Rite (唐礼) in high Tang characters (No. zhou 周 70A). It contains the text corresponding to the Da Tang Kaiyuan li 大唐開元礼, vol. 37: “Huangdi shixiang yu Taimiao 皇帝時享於太廟”. It is the first time to find the book in Dunhuang or Turfan manuscripts.3. In his Dunhuang Turfan Tangdai fazhi wenshu kaoshi 敦煌吐魯番唐代法制文書考釈, Liu Junwen thought the document of zhou 51 should be the Regulations of the Regional Military Organization. But the form of the original document could not conform to the Tang Regulations, so the author refutes his view and thinks that it is an official document relating to the beacon of the military fortress in the area of Dunhuang or Turfan.journal articl
