Kef Azigza Cave (or Tazzouguert Cave), 5.7 km S of Ksar Tazougart, 19 km W-NW of Boudenib, Er Rachidiyah Province, Morocco (32 °01’ 46.6” N, 03° 47’ 16.7” W, 1060 m a. s. l); for a detailed description of the site see Aulagnier and Destre (1985). Description and Diagnosis. Miniopterus maghrebensis sp. nov. is a medium-sized member of the genus Miniopterus Bonaparte, 1837 in most respects similar to M. schreibersii (Kuhl, 1817) s.str. (Figs. 2, 3, 4, 5). Forearm length 45–48 mm, condylobasal length of skull 14.7–15.3 mm, zygomatic width of skull 8.4–9.1 mm, length of upper tooth-row (canine to third molar, incl.) 5.7–6.2 mm (for all measurements, n = 25). The dorsal pelage in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. is chestnut brown to dark greyish-brown, the ventral pelage is pale brown (Fig. 2). Ventral hairs are bicoloured, dark brown on the proximal parts, pale brown to buffy in the distal parts. The dorsal skin of ears and the naked parts of face are pale greyish-brown, the ventral skin of ears is almost without pigments, fleshy pale to pinkish (Fig. 2). Wing membranes are dark brown to dark greyish-brown. Based on the skull size (cf. Fig. 3), M. maghrebensis sp. nov. conforms to the Central European representatives of M. schreibersii s.str., however, is slightly larger than most of the south-European and Levantine specimens, exceeding them on average by ca. 0.3–0.5 mm in largest skull measurements. The rostrum of M. maghrebensis sp. nov. is wide, the width across the infraorbital foramina is large, 4.0– 4.4 mm; the relative width of rostrum (infraorbital width of rostrum / largest length of skull) is very large in comparison to M. schreibersii s.str.: 0.27–0.28 in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. versus 0.24–0.27 in M. schreibersii s.str. from Europe and the Levant. The braincase in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. is high, the height of braincase (incl. the tympanic bullae) 7.7–8.4 mm; the relative height of braincase (largest height of braincase / largest length of skull) is large in comparison to M. schreibersii s.str.: 0.51–0.53 in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. versus 0.45–0.52 in M. schreibersii s.str. from Europe and the Levant. Mandibular molar-row is relatively short in M. maghrebensis sp. nov., its relative length (lower molar-row / mandible length) is 0.326 –0.331 (while 0.336 –0.359 in M. schreibersii s.str. from Europe and the Levant). M. maghrebensis sp. nov. has very distinct tubercle on the dorsal surface of the ramus mandibulae between the third molar and the coronoid process and on the zygomatic arches (cf. Fig. 3 & Šrámek et al., 2013). *IBP: Interval Between Pulses. Compared to M. schreibersii s.str. from Europe and the Levant (see Šrámek et al., 2013) unicuspidal teeth are more robust in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. The cingulum on the palatal side of the first upper molar has a very distinctive concave fold between the protoconus and the hypoconus in M. maghrebensis sp. nov. Measurements of the Holotype (in mm). External: Forearm length 45.8; head and body length 60; tail length 63; ear length 13.4; tragus length 6.3. Cranial: greatest length 15.15; condylobasal length 15.12; zygomatic width 8.59; width of interorbital constriction 3.58; neurocranium width 8.17; neurocranium height 6.31; largest horizontal diameter of tympanic bulla 2.97; rostrum width across upper canines 4.53; rostral width across third upper molars 6.27; length of upper tooth-row (canine to third molar, incl.) 5.93; condylar length of mandible 10.74; coronoid height of mandible 2.57; length of lower tooth-row (canine to third molar, incl.) 6.26. Genetic Characters. Mitochondrial DNA. The GenBank sequence (partial Cytochrome b, tRNA-Threonine, tRNA-Proline, HV1) of the holotype corresponds to the accession numbers KJ535784 & KJ535824. M. maghrebensis sp. nov. and M. schreibersii s.str. are sister groups, each species forming a strongly supported monophyletic clade (Fig. 6). The average K2P distance between M. schreibersii s.str. and Miniopterus maghrebensis sp. nov. sequences was 1.2%. Nuclear DNA. The microsatellite data are congruent with the mitochondrial DNA signal and provide clear evidence of two strongly isolated and differentiated gene pools which are represented by Miniopterus schreibersii s.str. and M. maghrebensis sp. nov. (Figs. 7 & 8). The Fst between the Miniopterus maghrebensis sp. nov. and M. schreibersii s.str. colonies ranged between 0.44 and 0.49 (significant values). Etymology. The name maghrebensis refers to the region (the Maghreb; the region of northern Africa located between the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Sahara) where the new species was discovered. The proposed vernacular names are Maghrebian bent-wing bat (English), Minioptère du Maghreb (French), Murciélago de cueva magrebí (Spanish), létavec maghrebský (Czech), ặ-----ǘdb*Jl Įặ----×ṣ÷لأ d³ ẕ÷ƆƖ-------è*Jl lỪƖ-------ậķJ (Arabic ⵜ ⵙ ⴰ ⵢ ⵍ ⴰ ⵍ ⴰ ⵎ ⴰ ⴼ ⵔ ⵉ ⵡ ⴻ ⴱ ⵢ ⴻ ⵜ ⵉ ⵏ ⵏ ⵜ ⴼ ⵔ ⵉ ⵇ ⵜ ⵓ ⴳ ⴰ ⴼ ⴰ (Berber). Distribution. Genetic analyses confirmed its presence from northern Morocco to south of the High Atlas Mountains and northern Tunisia (Fig. 10) (Šrámek et al., 2013; Puechmaille et al., 2012b; this study); however, these individuals were originally referred to as M. schreibersii. Based on these data and the current extent of Miniopterus distribution in the region (Aulagnier & Destre, 1986; Kowalski & Rzebik-Kowalska, 1991; Dieuleveut et al., 2010; Puechmaille et al., 2012b), we present a hypothetical distribution map of both species.     Back to the Suture: The Distribution of Intraspecific Genetic Diversity in and Around Anatolia

    The effect of ice ages in speciation and diversification is well established in the literature. In Europe, the Iberian, the Italian and the Balkan peninsulas comprise the main glacial refugia, where the subsequent re-population of Europe started. Though not studied as extensively, Anatolia has also been hinted to be a potential glacial refugium for Europe, and with its proximity to the Caucasus and the Middle East at the same time, has potential to exhibit high levels of intraspecific diversity. The more ubiquitous use and cheaper availability of molecular methods globally now makes it possible to better understand molecular ecology and evolution of the fauna and flora in the genetically understudied regions of the world, such as Anatolia. In this review, the molecular genetic studies undertaken in Anatolia in the last decade, for 29 species of plants and animals, are examined to determine general phylogeographic patterns. In this regard, two major patterns are observed and defined, showing genetic breaks within Anatolia and between Anatolia and the Balkans. A third pattern is also outlined, which suggests Anatolia may be a center of diversity for the surrounding regions. The patterns observed are discussed in terms of their relevance to the location of suture zones, postglacial expansion scenarios, the effect of geographic barriers to gene flow and divergence time estimates, in order to better understand the effect of the geological history of Anatolia on the evolutionary history of the inhabitant species.     Automated estimation of link quality for Lora: A remote sensing approach

    Many research and industrial communities are betting on LoRa to provide reliable, long-range communication for the Internet of Things. This new radio technology, however, provides widely heterogeneous coverage; a LoRa link may span hundreds of meters or tens of kilometers, depending on the surrounding environment. This high variability is not captured by popular channel models for LoRa, and on-site measurementsÐa common alternativeÐare impractical due to the large geographical areas involved. We propose a novel, automated approach to estimate the coverage of LoRa gateways prior to deployment and without on-site measurements. We achieve this goal by combining free, readily-available multispectral images from remote sensing with the right channel model. Our processing toolchain automatically classifies the type of environment (e.g., buildings, trees, or open fields) traversed by a link, with high accuracy (>90%) and spatial resolution (10×10m2). We use this information to explain the attenuation observed in experiments. As signal attenuation is not well captured by popular channel models, we focus on the Okumura-Hata empirical model, hitherto largely unexplored for LoRa, and show that i) it yields estimates very close to our observations, and ii) we can use our toolchain to automatically select and configure its parameters. A validation on 8,000+ samples from a real dataset shows that our automated approach predicts the expected signal power within a ∼10dBm error, against the 20ś40dBm of popular channel models.Embedded System

The universe of the research constitutes hotel businesses operating in the Western Black Sea Region. Survey data were obtained using questionnaire technique. As a result of the analysis, it is determined that the innovation perceptions of the managers of the hotel businesses has an effect on the types of innovations applied in the businesses. Nevertheless, it has been determined that business managers' perceptions of innovation have no meaningful effect on innovation strategies applied to the business. In other words, it has been reached that the innovation strategies of the businesses are determined by the variables other than the innovation perceptions of the managers.     Phylogeographic analysis of Anatolian bats highlights the importance of the region for preserving the Chiropteran mitochondrial genetic diversity in the Western Palaearctic

    Identification of intraspecific conservation units and incorporating the distribution of genetic diversity into management plans are crucial requirements for assessing effective protection strategies. This study investigates the phylogeographic structures of 33 bat species present in the Near East in order to evaluate the conservation implications of their intraspecific genetic diversity both at regional and large-scale levels. To compare Anatolian populations with the European ones, we utilized two commonly used mitochondrial markers, Cytb and ND1, and analysed them together with the available sequences from GenBank. The management requirements of the identified clades and their taxonomical relations were evaluated by analysing their distributions and the levels of their genetic differentiations. In 12 species and the large Myotis complex, we identified a total of 15 genetically distinct populations found in the Near East, some of which might represent biologically distinct taxa. Comparing the phylogeographic patterns of different taxa indicates that three regions, the Balkans, the Caucasus, and the southern Anatolia, harbour genetically divergent populations and should have higher priority in conservation practices. Considering that Turkey has one of the richest bat fauna in the Mediterranean region and the Anatolian populations of various species are genetically distinct, protecting populations in Turkey is critically important for preserving the genetic diversity of the bats in the Western Palaearctic.     Is the Bosphorus Strait a barrier to gene flow for the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis (Lamarck, 1819)?

    The Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis, is a commercially important species with a continuous distribution spanning the eastern Atlantic, the Mediterranean, the Aegean and the Black Sea. Previous genetic research has indicated differentiation between the Aegean and the Ukrainian Black Sea populations of this species. Using the COIII region of mitochondrial DNA and six microsatellite markers, we investigated whether there is any genetic differentiation among populations of the Black Sea, the Bosphorus Strait and the Sea of Marmara, on a local scale. A total of 170 mussels representing eight localities extending from the Black Sea to the Sea of Marmara, including the Bosphorus Strait, were analysed. Results for mitochondrial DNA and microsatellite analysis showed no significant genetic grouping among geographical regions. Ukrainian samples differed from those analysed in this study by a single base position. These results suggest that the Bosphorus Strait does not restrict gene flow for this species. Analysis of samples from a greater geographic range, encompassing the Dardanelles, the Aegean, and more northern populations in the Black Sea, will be necessary to understand the nature of the previously reported genetic break of the Mediterranean mussels between the Black Sea and the Aegean

    Using Citizen Science Data to Model the Distributions of Common Songbirds of Turkey Under Different Global Climatic Change Scenarios

    In this study, we evaluated the potential impact of climate change on the distributions of Turkey's songbirds in the 21st century by modelling future distributions of 20 resident and nine migratory species under two global climate change scenarios. We combined verified data from an ornithological citizen science initiative (www.kusbank.org) with maximum entropy modeling and eight bioclimatic variables to estimate species distributions and projections for future time periods. Model predictions for resident and migratory species showed high variability, with some species projected to lose and others projected to gain suitable habitat. Our study helps improve the understanding of the current and potential future distributions of Turkey's songbirds and their responses to climate change, highlights effective strategies to maximize avian conservation efforts in the study region, and provides a model for using citizen science data for biodiversity research in a large developing country with few professional field biologists. Our results demonstrate that climate change will not affect every species equally in Turkey.     Phylogeography of the greater horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (Chiroptera: Rhinolophidae), in southeastern Europe and Anatolia, with a specific focus on whether the Sea of Marmara is a barrier to gene flow

    Population differentiation during the ice ages, followed by range expansions has significantly contributed to the geographic distribution patterns of the genetic diversity in Europe. In this regard, the Iberian, Italian, Balkan peninsulas and Anatolia comprise important glacial refugia. In different parts of Anatolia, suture zones, where lineages that diverged in the different glacial refugia met again, were observed for several species. In this study, we investigated the mitochondrial genetic differentiation of the greater horseshoe bat, Rhinolophus ferrumequinum in southeastern Europe and Anatolia. The mitochondrial DNA analyses indicated a suture zone in central Anatolia, similar to those recorded in other animal species, showing the presence of more than one refugium within the region. The time of the split of these lineages that diverged in allopatry was dated to the Pleistocene. However, the location of this suture zone did not coincide with the Sea of Marmara, not supporting a recent hypothesis, based on microsatellite data, which states that this water body might be an impediment to post glacial gene flow in this species
