Two studies identified motivational, volitional and emotional predictors and correlates of PC and Internet literacy as well as correlates of usability criteria. Studies were conducted during the testing phase of Web-based trainings for key competencies at three German Universities in 2002 and 2003. Study 1 (2002, n = 149 university students) clarified which variables predict computer knowledge and self-confidence in using the PC. Variables in use were: error competence, planning behavior, academic self-efficacy, self-initiative and general action persistence. PC knowledge was mainly predicted by self-confidence in using the PC and gender (women scoring lower than men). Self-confidence in using the PC showed positive correlations with persistence, academic self-efficacy and self-initiative. Self-confidence in using the PC was predicted by error competence (positively), error strain, and self-initiative (both negatively). In 2002 it could also be tested whether attitudes towards the PC and self-confidence in using the PC change over time while using a Web based training. Using ANCOVA (controlling for PC experience) a significant but small positive overall effect for attitudes could be found for the treatment group in comparison to a control group. The results for self-confidence in using the PC showed a small but significant increase for the control group and no change over time for the treatment group. Based on the findings of study 1, in study 2 (2003, n = 184 university students) two valid and reliable scales for the assessment of PC-specific error strain and persistence in using the PC were developed. To clarify patterns of correlation a measure of self concept of computer ability was introduced besides the above mentioned scales. Negative correlations between PC-error strain and Internet literacy variables could be found. PC error strain correlated positively with error strain and negatively with persistence. Persistence in using the PC correlated positively with self-concept of computer ability, self-confidence in using the PC and negatively with PC-error strain. Persistence in using the PC showed negative correlations with error strain and positive correlations with academic self-efficacy. Planning behavior showed positive relationships with persistence and Internet knowledge. Finally self-concept of computer ability showed a positive correlation with Internet knowledge. Furthermore, a model for the prediction of Internet knowledge could be tested. Self-confidence in using the PC was mediated by persistence in using the PC which again was mediated by measures of Web usage. Self confidence in using the PC also was mediated by self-confidence of Web use. Two direct paths could be identified: Self-confidence in using the PC and self-confidence of Web use directly influenced Internet knowledge positively. The model showed a good fit to the empirical data. Theoretical implications of the model are discussed. In 2003 it was tested whether attitudes towards E-Learning change over time while using a Web based training. Using a longitudinal non-control-group design, a significant albeit small decrease of the attitude scores could be found. Significant gender differences in favour of men on the basis of mean scores could be found in 2003 for persistence in using the PC, Internet knowledge, measures of Web usage, self confidence in using the PC, and self-concept of computer-related ability. Implications concerning E-Learning and curricula for PC and Internet literacy are discussed. Based upon the sample mentioned above (study 2, 2003), correlations between person-related variables and evaluation criteria of Web based trainings where obtained (online overall indicators for evaluation criteria and paper-pencil measures for person related variables). Self confidence in using the PC showed a negative relationship with technical problems and a positive relationship with measures for instruction. Self-concept of computer ability showed a negative correlation with technical problems and a positive relationship with measures for instruction. PC error strain showed a positive correlation with technical problems and a negative correlation with measures for instruction whereas persistence in using the PC showed negative correlations with technical problems. Internet knowledge showed a negative correlation with technical problems but also negative correlations with navigation and mapping and measures of interaction. Finally important issues concerning the implementation of E-Learning and E-Teaching competencies in higher education are discussed focusing institutional obstacles and opportunities

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The main theme of human resource management is the digitalization of production and work and the related opportunities for telecommunications and cloud work. Efficient solutions of human resources can be realized where these topics meet. The central focus of this paper is that of the "crowd worker", an employment arrangement that is quickly growing in use. Despite its popularity, little evidence has been collected on the individual experience of this work and its potential for health hazards. The issues reviewed in this article will include: Which systematically observable health effects are known to be associated with crowdworkers? And to what extent does the existent traditional health management system offer formative strategies for crowdworkers? The findings will conclude that crowdworking challenges the existing traditional employment and occupational safety and health systems. Crowdwork is fragmented work that can be carried out with a low level of skill. It only marginally requires professional knowledge and relevant skills of workers and offers little personal recognition or development opportunities. Crowdwork is poorly compensated, it suffers from highly fluctuating rates of work availability, and it involves significant health hazard risks. The traditional health management system cannot take on these risks. Suggestions for health management measures in response to the digital transformation of work will be presented

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
