The PhD work presented in this manuscript focuses on the experimental realization and the study of a cold-atom gyroscope based on matter wave interferometry. As part of the development of a cold-atom inertial measurement unit, techniques have been proposed to implement single axis atomic gyroscope which combines compactness, sensitivity and simplicity in order to being able to extend it to the other measurement axes of the future multi-axis sensor. In particular, an original method of atoms launching based on a magnetic field gradient pulse has been studied, demonstrating a gyroscope's scale factor stability of the order of 700 ppm over 24h due to launch velocity variations. This limit is not fundamental and can be reduced by improving the experimental setup. In addition, the performances of the atomic gyroscope have been analyzed. In static conditions, the setup has been tested during 44h of integration with an alternation of the launching direction in order to average some systematic effects. The results of this study have shown a relatively large bias on the Earth rotation measurement of the order of 25%, which could arise from a combine effect of the Raman laser's wave front aberrations and a dissymmetry between the two launching configurations. The gyroscope has demonstrated a short-term sensitivity of the order of 10⁻⁵ rad.s⁻¹)/√Hz, a priori limited by the non-perfect correction of the ground vibrations, as well as a long-term bias stability of 4× 10⁻⁷ rad.s⁻¹ over the whole integration range. The hybridization of the cold-atom gyroscope with a commercial gyroscope has allowed to reduce by a factor of 3 its bias drift. In a mean time, the atomic gyroscope has been tested in dynamic conditions simulated by rotating the retro-reflecting Raman mirror. Over the whole dynamic range, limited by the exponential decrease of the atom interferometer's contrast with the rotation rate, the sensor has demonstrated a linearity of the order of the percent. On the other hand, the agreement with the commercial gyroscope varies between < 1% and 5% according to the data set
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
: Onboard cold atom gravimeter
This HDR manuscript is about my research work at ONERA devoted to the development of a cold atom gravimeter allowing measurements from a boat or an airplane. This instrument is based on the acceleration measurement of a gas of cold atoms in free fall by an atom interferometry technique. Unlike conventional onboard gravimeters, this quantum technology allows absolute measurements and thus provides a considerable advantage for gravimetric campaigns where the regular calibrations required for conventional sensors impose significant constraints. In 2006, at the beginning of my research activity at ONERA, there were only atom gravimeter laboratory experiments. My research activity focused on developments allowing the use of this instrument on a mobile carrier. We therefore worked on the miniaturization, reliability and environmental resistance of the sensor and in particular the development of fiber laser systems, the study of an atomic interferometer using Bloch oscillations and the work on hybridization with classical sensors. Thanks to these developments, we have realized a prototype gravimeter and tested it successfully on ships and planes, demonstrating better measurement precisions than conventional sensors. On the strength of this experience, my research project aims to develop other cold atom inertial sensors (accelerometer, gyroscope) and thus to create an atomic inertial unit.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
In this thesis we present the realization of a magneto-optical trap of strontium loaded from a laser slowed atomic beam. We have constructed a 200 mW blue laser at 461 nm by frequency doubling an amplified laser diode. Our device has allowed us to trap 10^7 atoms at a temperature of 8 mK.We have used this cold strontium cloud to study interference effects in multiple scattering. More precisely, we have measured the coherent backscattering cone using light resonant with the J=0 - J=1 transition of strontium. The enhancement factor close to 2 obtained in the polarization channel h // h shows that, as opposed to rubidium, the effect of interferences in multiple scattering, which play a crucial role in strong localization, are not reduced in strontium. In order to achieve a magneto-optical trap on the narrow transition of strontium we have frequency locked a laser at 689 nm to an ultrastable cavity. We have measured a spectral linewidth below 1 kHz which is sufficient for the experiment. Finally, we present a theoretical study of Doppler cooling on a narrow transition.
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
