Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Contribution of the force-velocity profiling to the evaluation of transfer from dry-land strength and conditioning to performance in high-level sprint swimming
La préparation physique à sec constitue un élément essentiel de l'entraînement moderne en natation, visant notamment l’amélioration de la condition physique et de la performance des sportifs. Cette thèse explore la problématique cruciale du transfert entre la préparation physique à sec et la performance en sprint, dans le but d’optimiser ce processus pour les nageurs de haut niveau. Ce travail a débuté par la diffusion d’un questionnaire qui a permis de recueillir les pratiques de terrain auprès des préparateurs physiques des structures de haut niveau en France et de les confronter aux recommandations scientifiques. Différentes phases expérimentales ont ensuite permis de répondre à plusieurs objectifs. Les méthodologies de mesure se sont appuyées sur l’utilisation du profilage force-vitesse à sec ainsi que du profilage charge-vitesse et de l’estimation des paramètres de résistance à l’avancement dans l’eau. Ainsi, nous avons pu identifier le lien entre les paramètres issus du profilage charge-vitesse en crawl avec la performance en compétition ainsi qu’avec les paramètres issus du profilage force-vitesse réalisé sur différents exercices de préparation physique à sec. Nous avons également pu analyser les effets d’un entraînement en force maximale à sec sur les paramètres mentionnés ci-dessus. Enfin la dernière étape consistait à suivre les évolutions parallèles de ces différents paramètres au cours d’une saison. Les résultats de cette thèse visent à fournir des outils d’aide à la décision pour l’optimisation de la performance des nageurs de haut niveau et à apporter une contribution scientifique à l’amélioration des méthodes de monitoring en natation.Dry-land strength and conditioning (S&C) is a key component of modern swim training, aimed at improving physical condition and performance of athletes. This thesis examines the critical issue of the transfer between dry-land S&C and sprint performance, with the goal of optimizing this process for elite swimmers. This work began with the distribution of a questionnaire to collect field practices from S&C coaches in high-level training centers across France and to compare them to scientific recommendations. Various experimental phases were then carried out to achieve several objectives. Measurement methods relied on dry-land force-velocity profiling, swimming load-velocity profiles, and the estimation of in-water drag parameters. Therefore, we identified the relationship between parameters derived from front crawl load-velocity profiling and competition performance, and with parameters from force-velocity profiling conducted on different dry-land exercises. Then we analyzed the effects of dry-land maximal strength training on the aforementioned parameters. Finally, the last part of the research monitored the parallel evolutions of these parameters over a season. The results of this thesis aim to provide decision-support tools to optimize the performance of elite swimmers and contribute scientifically to the improvement of monitoring methods in swimming
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Physical activity and cancer cachexia : from molecular mechanisms to management care of patients
La cachexie cancéreuse est l'un des effets secondaires les plus néfastes du cancer et de ses traitements. Caractérisée par une perte de poids rapide et involontaire, elle est associée à une diminution de l'espérance de vie. Il n'existe actuellement aucune prise en charge pour lutter efficacement contre ce syndrome. L'activité physique se présente comme un soin de support incontournable dans la prise en charge des patients atteints de cancer. Elle semble être une stratégie pertinente pour lutter contre la cachexie cancéreuse. Toutefois, les données disponibles ne permettent pas de déterminer ses effets chez les patients concernés. L'objectif de cette thèse est de décrypter les effets de l'activité physique dans un contexte de cachexie cancéreuse en développant une étude pilote chez le patient, en condition réelle et une étude pré-clinique chez la souris. Nos travaux ont montré, en condition de vie réelle qu'il est possible pour des patients atteints de cachexie de suivre un programme d'activité physique adaptée et d'en obtenir des bénéfices. Toutefois, nous avons observé une réponse différentielle de deux modalités d'activité physique dans un modèle murin de cachexie liée au cancer du pancréas. L'activité physique volontaire sur roue permet de ralentir le développement de la cachexie cancéreuse, tandis que l'entrainement sur tapis roulant l'accélère. Ces résultats sont encourageants et démontrent l'importance d'étudier différents paramètres d'activité physique afin d'identifier ceux étant optimaux. Cela permettra de préciser les recommandations en matière d'activité physique pour les patients atteints de cachexie et ainsi améliorer leur prise en charge.Cancer cachexia is one of the most harmful side effects of cancer and its treatments. Characterized by rapid and involuntary weight loss, it is associated with a decrease in life expectancy. There is currently no effective treatment for this syndrome. Physical activity is an essential supportive care in the management of cancer patients. lt seems to be a relevant strategy to fight against cancer cachexia. However, the available data do not allow us to determine its effects in the patients concerned. The objective of this thesis is to study the effects of physical activity in the context of cancer cachexia by developing a pilot study in patients and a pre-clinical study in Mice. Our work has shown, that it is possible for benefits. However, we observed a differential response of two physical activity modalities in a mouse model of cachexia related to pancreatic cancer. Voluntary physcial activity slows cancer cachexia development, while treadmill training enhance it. These results are encouraging and demonstrate the importance of studying different physical activity parameters in order to identify those that are optimal. This will help to refine physical activity recommendations for patients with cachexia and thus improve their management
