3PL provider selection by AHP and TOPSIS methodology

    No full text
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to provide a two-phase analytical hierarchy process (AHP) and the technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) approach that is a multi-criteria decision-making methodology (MCDM) in the evaluation of third-party logistics (3PL) providers. Design/methodology/approach: After the description of the selection criteria of 3PL providers that are determined by company management, the weights of criteria are calculated by applying the AHP method. The TOPSIS method is then employed to achieve the final ranking results. A sensitivity analysis is developed for a deeper comprehension of results reliability. Findings: The paper shows the complexity of a real 3PL provider change. At the same time, a simple MCDM methodology is provided to assure the success of this activity in which many other companies have failed. Research limitations/implications: The proposed MCDM methodology represents a very good compromise between a reliable solution and reasonable computational and human effort. 3PL provider selection or change is an extremely complex decision that could be investigated in greater detail with other more complex methodology, with a consequently higher investment, that is not so affordable for all budgets. Originality/value: It is the first time that a two-phase AHP and TOPSIS methodology is applied to an Italian biscuit company for a 3PL provider change together with the analysis of logistics performance after two years. The paper shows a detailed methodology application that could be very useful for managers for their specific application

The Innovative Concept of Cold District Heating Networks: A Literature Review

    No full text
The development of sustainable and innovative solutions for the production and supply of energy at district level is nowadays one of the main technical challenges. In the past, district heating and cooling networks aimed to achieve greater energy efficiency through the centralization of the energy production process but with relevant losses related to heat transport. Moving towards a higher share of renewables and lower demand of primary energy requires redesign of the energy district networks. The novel concept of cold district heating networks aims to combine the advantages of a centralized energy distribution system with low heat losses in energy supply. This combined effect is achieved through the centralized supply of water at relatively low temperatures (in the range 10–25 °C), which is then heated up by decentralized heat pumps. Moreover, cold district heating networks are also very suitable for cooling delivery, since cold water supplying can be directly used for cooling purposes (i.e., free cooling) or to feed decentralized chillers with very high energy efficiency ratio. This paper provides a preliminary literature review of existing cold district heating networks and then qualitatively analyses benefits and drawbacks in comparison with the alternatives currently used to produce heat and cold at district level, including the evaluation of major barriers to its further development

An Innovative Visualization Tool to Boost and Monitor Circular Economy: An Overview of Its Applications at Different Industrial Sectors

    No full text
The quantification of the circular economy and sustainability is a relevant aspect at different levels of applications: (i) the companies need to evaluate and improve the environmental, economic, and social impacts of their products and processes; (ii) the financial bodies must have quantitative information about the potential and risks of different proposed initiatives to select the optimal opportunity; and (iii) the policy-makers must be guided for the coherent definition of strategies at regional, national and international scales, setting realistic targets and measuring their effectiveness. However, the lack of comprehensive and robust approaches to quantify circular economy makes it challenging to apply quantitative methods and indicators in different contexts and compare the results, with the risk of limiting the practical implementation of circular initiatives due to unknown and/or unclear potential and contribution. The ViVACE® tool (Visualization of Value to Assess Circular Economy), developed by the authors, is a promising and effective means to collect data in a systematized manner, helpful to assess sectorial and cross-sectorial indicators about sustainability. It has been applied to different industrial sectors (e.g., plastics, food processing, textile) for different purposes. These applications are described in detail to highlight the potential, versatility, and implications of the proposed tool in boosting the effective transition to a circular economy

Sustainable use of phosphorus raw materials on the example of Italian companies

    No full text
Although intensive efforts have been focused on a more sustainable use of phosphorus (P) in the last two decades, the full-scale implementation of P recovery technologies is not widespread in the industrial sector. Their diffusion is limited by lack of high-resolution and integrated analyses about the potential, benefits and risks of industrial innovation in this field, and the quantification of business, economic, environmental and social impacts at firm level. To cover this gap, the University of Bologna developed an industry-oriented methodology to deliver quantitative information, necessary to companies to explore their potential pathways about P recovery. The methodology, developed through the knowledge gained in two EU projects, InPhos (EIT Raw Materials) and Prosumer (EIT Climate-KIC), consists of four main steps: (i) identification of business interests and constraints; (ii) assessment of P flows in the company boundaries; (iii) cost assessment; and (iv) sustainability assessment through relevant Key Performance Indicators. The methodology was applied to an Italian food company, highlighting that only less than 50% of the P contained in raw materials remains in the final products and that the implementation of a P removal technology allows the compliance of legislative limits. Nevertheless, the economic feasibility is not ensured, confirming literature results. Consequently, suitable and tailored policies and financial tools must be defined to support the diffusion of P recovery at industrial level. The quantitative information provided by the methodology are therefore useful for policy makers and financial bodies to respond to needs and specialization of companies in their territories

From financial merchandise planning to supply chain design and execution

For years agents believed that technology could have bridged the gap in fashion companies. This has not come true. Significant investments aimed at implementing complex systems have often failed. Indeed, they have not been able, in a simple, flexible and comprehensive way, to integrate all the processes that, by definition, are changeable and not only influenced by deterministic factors. Therefore, it proves necessary, in complex organizations, to promote those best practices and habits that support and enhance personal freedom, judgments and hypotheses. This is the process by which the retailer seeks to provide the right amount and quality of the right merchandise in the right store at the right time, while also seeking to meet the financial goals of the company. This project, developed by the collaboration between the Department of Industrial Engineering (University of Bologna) and K.Group, aims to show how financial planning of Merchandise Planning may be implemented in a major Italian Fashion Retail Company, presenting the preliminary plan to integrate it with the specific processes of Supply Chain Planning and Execution, hence highlighting achievements, methodology and technological resources in terms of: data management (normal- ization and load data), business intelligence (score carding, dashboards, reporting, analysis), predictive analytics (clustering, simulation), performance management (budgeting, planning and forecasting, profitability), workflow management and data integration

Lawyer, Paola Savio, during the interview carried out at her law firm in Turin, makes some considerations about the so-called “Cogne case” . Particular attention is paid on the final step of the judicial action where the Surveillance Court of Bologna made a special home detention order on 26th June 2014. The lawyer underlines the importance of the synergy and the successful meeting among professionals (the independent technical consultant, Prof. Augusto Balloni, and the defence consultant, prof. Pietro Pietrini). She is also pleased with the quality of the help given to her client during the rehabilitation phase. Finally, she hopes, as already publicly stated, that the family F. would no longer be in the focus of attention
