    Partial Function Extension with Applications to Learning and Property Testing

    Partial function extension is a basic problem that underpins multiple research topics in optimization, including learning, property testing, and game theory. Here, we are given a partial function consisting of n points from a domain and a function value at each point. Our objective is to determine if this partial function can be extended to a function defined on the domain, that additionally satisfies a given property, such as linearity. We formally study partial function extension to fundamental properties in combinatorial optimization - subadditivity, XOS, and matroid independence. A priori, it is not clear if partial function extension for these properties even lies in NP (or coNP). Our contributions are twofold. Firstly, for the properties studied, we give bounds on the complexity of partial function extension. For subadditivity and XOS, we give tight bounds on approximation guarantees as well. Secondly, we develop new connections between partial function extension and learning and property testing, and use these to give new results for these problems. In particular, for subadditive functions, we give improved lower bounds on learning, as well as the first subexponential-query tester

    The Complexity of Partial Function Extension for Coverage Functions

    Coverage functions are an important subclass of submodular functions, finding applications in machine learning, game theory, social networks, and facility location. We study the complexity of partial function extension to coverage functions. That is, given a partial function consisting of a family of subsets of [m] and a value at each point, does there exist a coverage function defined on all subsets of [m] that extends this partial function? Partial function extension is previously studied for other function classes, including boolean functions and convex functions, and is useful in many fields, such as obtaining bounds on learning these function classes. We show that determining extendibility of a partial function to a coverage function is NP-complete, establishing in the process that there is a polynomial-sized certificate of extendibility. The hardness also gives us a lower bound for learning coverage functions. We then study two natural notions of approximate extension, to account for errors in the data set. The two notions correspond roughly to multiplicative point-wise approximation and additive L_1 approximation. We show upper and lower bounds for both notions of approximation.     Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) techniques in the management of benign and malignant kidney conditions

    My thesis underlines the role and current evidence of minimally invasive surgical (MIS) technique for benign and malignant renal conditions.Evidence is presented for the use of laparoscopic and robotic partial nephrectomy along with expanding indications for ureteroscopy. Systematic reviews of ureteroscopy for large stones, obese patients, patients with bleeding diathesis and children is presented. Use of ureteroscopy for endoscopic diagnosis and management of upper urinary tract tumours is also presented.The work is comprised of 12 peer-reviewed published papers including 8 systematic reviews and 4 original research papers using retrospective or prospective case series on the subject.Based on the evidence, new insight into MIS for renal conditions will help clinicians and patients in informed decision-making. Minimally invasive surgery is a step in the right direction for management of various benign and malignant renal conditions. My work demonstrates evidence-based outcomes, which will ensure widespread adoption of these techniques in future

    This paper presents a system that performs the recovery of camera motion parameters and the segmentation of mobile objects in video documents for content indexing. Two dierent methods are used for the recovery of the camera motion (relatively to the main background), the rst for a camera maintained at a xed location with rotational and zoom degrees of freedom, and the second for a camera of arbitrary motion but assuming a xed focal length. The rst method is based on the search of an optimal projective transform between consecutive images combined with an iterative background / mobile objects segmentation process. The second method is based on a paraperspective factorization method for shape and motion recovery. Both methods rely on the use of a dense and high-quality matching between consecutive images (optical ow).     Parapharyngodon hemidactylii n. sp. (n= 15 males, n= 20 females) The parasite is a tender white cylindrical worm tapering at both the ends. Prominent annulations visible beginning just behind cephalic extremity and continuing up to the anus. Sexual dimorphism is clearly distinct. Triangular oral opening is surrounded by 3 bilobed lips. Adult male (All measurements are in mm. unless otherwise stated). Cylindrical worm 0.755 (0.47–0.96) long, 0.236 (0.18–0.37) wide at its maximum width (Plate I Fig. 1; Plate III Fig. 1). Cuticle with annulations forming swollen rings in posterior region. Esophageal tube 0.283 (0.20–0.54) long and 0.031 (0.02–0.04) wide. Esophageal bulb 0.079 (0.05–0.11) long and 0.089 (0.07–0.11) wide (Plate I Fig. 2). Nerve ring not clearly distinct. Caudal papillae absent. Spicules 0.049 (0.035–0.085) long and pointed (Plate I Fig. 3). Tail filament 0.065 (0.01–0.09) long, terminal in position and directed posteriorly (Plate I Fig. 4, 5; Plate III Fig. 2). Adult female (All measurements are in mm. unless otherwise stated). Body length 3.47 (2.47–4.05), width 0.405 (0.33–0.51) at maximum width (Plate II Fig. 1, 2; Plate III Fig. 3). Cuticle with annulations approximately 0.032 (0.01–0.055) long and 0.021 (0.015–0.035) in width (Plate II Fig. 1; Plate III Fig. 4). Esophageal tube or corpus 0.55 (0.50–0.64) in length and 0.05 (0.045–0.06) in width and esophageal bulb 0.194 (0.17–0.215) in length and 0.225 (0.21–0.26) in width (Plate II Fig. 2; Plate III Fig. 5). Reproductive structures confined to body cavity between vulva and anus and the developing ova visible in the uterus (Plate III Fig. 6). Nerve ring not clearly distinct. Excretory pore and vulva situated at 1.18 and 1.44 (1.20–1.70) respectively from the anterior end (Plate II Fig. 3; Plate IV Fig. 1). Body with conical termination (Plate II Fig. 5; Plate IV Fig. 2). Tail 0.11 (0.075–0.135) long and 0.063 (0.045–0.10) wide (Plate IV Fig. 3).     A Unified Shell model for Buoyancy-Driven Turbulence

    We construct a unified shell model for stably stratified and convective turbulence. Shell model simulation of stably stratified flow in turbulent regime exhibit Bolgiano-Obukhbov (BO) scaling in which the kinetic energy spectrum varies as k11/5k^{-11/5}. However, simulation of convective turbulence shows Kolmogorov's spectrum. These results are consistent with the direct numerical simulations of Kumar {\em et al.} [Phys. Rev. E {\bf 90}, 023016 (2014)]. We also observe a dual scaling (k11/5k^{-11/5} and k5/3k^{-5/3}) for a limited range of parameters in stably stratified flow
