Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Caracterização de genótipos de alface (Lactuca sativa L.) em cultivo hidropônico sob diferentes valores de condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva
No sistema hidropônico, a alface (Lactuca sativa L.) é a hortaliça mais cultivada representando 80% da produção. Este trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar e avaliar o comportamento de acessos de alface sob dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da solução nutritiva, bem como a variabilidade genética desses genótipos através de marcadores moleculares do tipo ISSR (Inter simple sequence repeat). Foram realizados quatro experimentos em dois níveis de condutividade elétrica da solução, 2,5 dS.m-1 e 2,0 dS.m-1. As sementes foram postas para germinar em placas de espuma fenólica e levadas, posteriormente, para a mesa de desenvolvimento, na qual receberam solução nutritiva durante 10 dias, quando foram transferidas para perfis de polipropileno com diâmetro de 50 mm, por mais 15 dias. Passado este período os tratamentos foram distribuídos no delineamento de blocos casualizados com repetições no tempo, em perfis de 75 mm de diâmetro, por mais 15 dias, totalizando o ciclo cultural de 45 dias. Avaliou-se o peso fresco das plantas inteiras, número de folhas, peso das folhas, índice de queima das bordas, comprimento do caule e peso do caule e raiz. Comparando a reação das cultivares, às soluções nutritivas com condutividade elétrica de 2,5 dS.m-1 e 2,0 dS.m-1, observou-se que o índice de queima das bordas das cvs. Babá de Verão e Floresta apresentou diferença, com menor percentual de queima na condutividade elétrica de 2,0 dS.m-1. Com relação ao peso fresco da planta inteira e peso das folhas frescas, as cultivares apresentaram diferenças significativas nas duas variáveis, obtendo os maiores pesos as alfaces cultivadas em solução nutritiva com condutividade elétrica de 2,5 dS.m-1. Comparando-se a reação dos acessos na condutividade elétrica de 2,5 dS.m-1 e 2,0 dS.m-1, observa-se que Tinto, P-76 e P-78 apresentaram alto índice de queima das bordas com a solução de 2,5 dS.m-1. Para o peso fresco da planta inteira e peso das folhas frescas, Regina 2000, Tinto, P-44, P-85 e P-89 não apresentaram diferenças significativas em relação aos dois níveis de condutividade. Para o estudo da variabilidade genética, foram utilizados trinta primers de ISSR. Os dados obtidos foram interpretados com o auxílio de uma matriz de similaridade genética e pela construção de um dendrograma. Destes, dez primers amplificaram um total de 134 fragmentos de DNA nos acessos de alface estudados. A média de fragmentos amplificados por primer foi de 13,4 e o tamanho desses fragmentos variou de 400 (UBC 842) a 2000 pb (UBC 808 e 857). Os resultados indicam que marcadores ISSR podem ser úteis em estudos de diversidade genética em germoplasma de alface.Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is the most cultivated vegetable in hydroponic system. This work aims to evaluate and characterize genotypes of lettuce grown under two levels of electric conductivity of nutrient solution, as well the genetic variability of these genotypes through the molecular markers of the type ISSR (Inter Simple Sequence Repeat. Four experiments were carried out using nutrient solutions with electric conductivity of 2.0 or 2.5 dS.m-1. Seeds were sown in phenolic foam plates and the seedlings were transferred for the nursling, on which they grew for 10 days receiving diluted nutrient solution. Then, they were transferred to polypropylene hydroponics channels measuring 50 mm of diameter on a growth bench for the initial growth. After 15 days the plants were transferred to others hydroponics channels measuring 75 mm of diameter on which they received the experimental treatments for more 15 days. Plant fresh weight, leaves fresh weight, root and stem fresh weight, stem length, number of leaves and tip-burning index were evaluated. Comparing the reaction of the cvs to the nutrient solutions with electric conductivity of 2.0 and 2.5 dS.m-1, the results showed that the tip-burning index for Babá de Verão and Forest was lesser for those grown on the nutrient solution of 2.0 than 2.5 dS.m-1. The total plant fresh weight and leaves fresh weight were greater for the plants grown on de nutrient solution with electric conductivity of 2.5 than 2.0 dS.m-1. The cvs Tinto, P-76 and P-78 presented higher tip-burning index on the nutrient solution of 2.5 dS.m-1, comparing to 2.0 dS.m-1. There was no significant difference on total plant fresh weight neither leaves fresh weight of the cvs Regina 2000, Tinto, P-44, P-85 and P-89, comparing the two nutrient solutions. For the study of the genetic variability thirty primers of ISSR were used. The data were interpreted with the aid of a matrix of genetic similarity after the construction of a dendrogram. Regarding all genotypes of lettuce studied, ten primers were amplified of a total of 134 fragments of DNA. The average of 13.4 fragments per primer was amplified and the size of fragments varied from 400 (UBC 842) to 2000 bp (UBC 808 and 857). The results showed that ISSR markers can be useful in the studies of genetic diversity of lettuce germplasm
Biomassa e nutrientes minerais no bambu em função da adubação mineral
O bambu (Bambusa vulgaris), pertencente à família Poaceae. É bastante difundido nas Américas embora originário da China. É adequado para reflorestamento por possuir um crescimento rápido. No Brasil, a principal utilização desta planta é na produção de polpa celulósica para a produção de papel. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a influência da adubação mineral no crescimento de plantas de bambu cultivadas em vasos com solo. O solo foi adubado com as doses equivalentes a 0,00; 20,00; 40,00; 80,00 e 120,00 kg ha-1 de nitrogênio e 0,00; 10,00; 40,00; 80,00 e 100,00 kg ha-1 de fósforo e potássio respectivamente. O delineamento experimental foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. As plantas de bambu foram cultivadas durante 120 dias. Após este período as plantas foram coletadas e determinadas a biomassa das folhas, colmo, raízes e biomassa total. A maior produção de biomassa seca total foi obtida nas doses de 120, 10 e 100 kg ha-1 de NPK. A maior produção de biomassa nas folhas, colmo e raízes, foram obtidas respectivamente com as doses de 80, 10 e 100 kg ha-1, 120, 40 e 100 kg ha-1 e 80, 10 e 100 kg ha-1 de NPK.The bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) belongs to the poaceae family. It has its origin in China, though widely spread in the American Continent. It is suitable for reforestation due to its fast growth. In Brazil, the main utilization of this plant is for the production of cellulosic pulp for the paper industry. The present study aims at evaluating the influence of mineral fertilization of bamboo plants grown in pots with soil. The soil was fertilized with the doses equivalent at 0.00; 20.00; 40.00; 80.00 and 120.00 kg ha-1 of nitrogen and 0.00; 10.00; 40.00; 80.00 and 100.00 kg ha-1 of phosphorus and potassium. The experimental design was randomized blocks with four replications. The bamboo plants were grown for 120 days. After this period the plants were harvested and the total biomass was determined as well the biomass allocation in leaves, culm, roots and total biomass. The highest production of total dry weight biomass was achieved the dose of 120, 10 e 100 kg ha-1 de NPK. The highest biomass production in leaves, culm and root it was achieved respectively with the doses of 80, 10 and 100 kg ha-1, 120, 40 and 100 kg ha-1 and 80, 10 and 100 kg ha-1 of NPK
Potencial antioxidante de resíduo agroindustrial de goiaba
Diante da elevada produção de resíduo agroindustrial e da possibilidade deste material conter fitoquímicos bioativos, este trabalho objetivou avaliar o potencial antioxidante de resíduo de goiaba (semente) proveniente de uma indústria de polpas de frutas congeladas. Extratos hidroacetônico, hidrometanólico, hidroetanólico e aquoso, obtidos por extração sequencial, foram utilizados para quantificar o teor de fenólicos totais e determinar a atividade antioxidante em sistema da co-oxidação β-caroteno/ácido linoléico e pelo método tiocianato férrico e a capacidade de seqüestrar radicais livres [DPPH• (1,1- difenil-2-picrilhidrazil) e ABTS•+ (2,2’-azino-bis-(3-etilbenzotiazolina-6-ácido sulfônico]. Os extratos hidroacetônico e hidrometanólico exibiram os maiores teores de fenólicos totais (5.317,27 e 2.176,46ag em equivalente de catequina mL-1, respectivamente), sendo, portanto, o aquoso e hidroetanólico excluídos da avaliação do potencial antioxidante. O extrato hidroacetônico exibiu elevado percentual de inibição da oxidação (81,95%) no ensaio da co-oxidação do β-caroteno/ acido linoléico; elevado percentual de inibição da peroxidação do ácido linoléico (74,32% e 80,13%, respectivamente, nas concentraçõesde 140 e 240mg/L); boa capacidade de sequestrar o radical DPPH (percentual de sequestro >60%, baixo valor de EC50 e de TEC50, e médio EA); e o radical ABTS•+ (875,79 mM TEAC.g-1). O extrato hidrometanólico exibiu baixo percentual de inibição da oxidação (38,92%) no ensaio da co-oxidação do β-caroteno/ acido linoléico; inibição da peroxidação do ácido linoléico de 50,50% e 73,70% (nas concentrações de 140 e 240mg/L, respectivamente); e fraca capacidade de sequestrar o radical DPPH (percentual de sequestro 60%; low value of EC50 and TEC50, middle value of AE), and good ABTS•+ scavenging activity (875.79mM TEAC.g-1). The hydromethanolic extract exhibited low percentage of the inhibition of oxidation (38.92%) in β-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation system, inhibition of linoleic acid peroxidation of the 50.50% and 73.70% (at concentrations 140 and 240mg/L, respectively), DPPH• scavenging activity (scavenging percentage < 30%, high EC50 and TEC50, and low value of AE), and bad ABTS• + scavenging activity (57.16 mM TEAC.g -1). Combining of the hydroacetone extract with BHT at different concentrations, the scavenging activity and inhibition of oxidation, in β-carotene/linoleic acid co-oxidation system were similar to that BHT alone, which demonstrated synergism between them. Hydroacetone extract from guava waste (seeds) has a significant potential antioxidant since it has shown better performance in scavenging DPPH • and ABTS• + radical, important antioxidant activity in lipid emulsion system, and synergism with BHT. Thus, the agri-industrial waste from guava can be considered as alternative of natural antioxidants
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
