Il granuloma plasmacellulare o pseudotumore infiamma-
torio è una rara lesione proliferativa benigna, con eziologia
incerta, che si localizza prevalentemente nel parenchima
polmonare ed epatico. Sono stati riportati nella letteratura
casi di granuloma plasmacellulare con invasione mediasti-
nica [l, 5] e la localizzazione primitiva nel mediastino è
estremamente rara [1].
Riportiamo un caso di pseudotumore infiammatorio con
esclusiva localizzazione mediastinica, studiato con radiolo-
gia tradizionale, TC ed RM e verificato istologicamente
Automatic Implant Generation for Cranioplasty via Occupancy Networks
The design of patient-specific implants for cranioplasty surgery is time-consuming and challenging. Hence, the 2021 AutoImplant II challenge, consisting of the SkullBreak and SkullFix datasets, was organized to foster research on computer vision techniques pursuing automation of the cranial implant design task. Data-driven methods working on Computed Tomography (CT) emerged as a promising procedure for the realization of such a task. The best performing approaches turned out to rely on ensembles of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) architectures that either process each CT slice separately or the entire voxelized volume through computationally demanding three-dimensional convolutions. More recently, few methods were designed to deal with different data representations, for instance point clouds, to perform skull completion. Similarly, we investigate a novel solution for implant generation that deploys a conditioned occupancy network. Starting from the partial point cloud, we directly reconstruct the completed voxel grid by evaluating the learned occupancy function in the given space resolution. Our approach can generate high-quality implants achieving qualitative and quantitative results comparable to state-of-the-art methods on the SkullBreak and SkullFix datasets while requiring significantly less computational resources. The model trained on the SkullBreak dataset successfully generalize to real craniotomies provided in the MUG500+ dataset
Prosthetically guided mandibular reconstruction using a fibula free flap: three-dimensional Bologna plate, an alternative to the double-barrel technique
The fibula free flap represents the gold standard for mandibular reconstruction. However, when harvested as a single barrel, this flap does not allow the native mandibular height to be restored, which is required for implant-supported dental rehabilitation of the patient. The aim of this study was to present a new design for a patient-specific three-dimensionally printed reconstructive plate (3DBO-PSI) that positions the fibula bone at the height of the resected mandibular alveolar bone while restoring the mandibular profile to ensure a correct morphological outcome. Twenty patients were enrolled prospectively between January 2019 and May 2022. All patients underwent a segmental mandibular resection and prosthetically guided reconstruction making use of a fibula free flap supported by the 3DBO-PSI. The mean follow-up period was 20 months. All microvascular and implant-related complications were recorded. Microvascular failure occurred in two patients. No PSI-related complications were recorded during the postoperative follow-up. The proposed reconstructive method was found to be reliable and reproducible. In all treated patients, the bony flap appeared to be adequately positioned to maintain the preoperative intermaxillary relationship, as planned. Neural shape completion for personalized Maxillofacial surgery
In this paper, we investigate the effectiveness of shape completion neural networks as clinical aids in maxillofacial surgery planning. We present a pipeline to apply shape completion networks to automatically reconstruct complete eumorphic 3D meshes starting from a partial input mesh, easily obtained from CT data routinely acquired for surgery planning. Most of the existing works introduced solutions to aid the design of implants for cranioplasty, i.e. all the defects are located in the neurocranium. In this work, we focus on reconstructing defects localized on both neurocranium and splanchnocranium. To this end, we introduce a new dataset, specifically designed for this task, derived from publicly available CT scans and subjected to a comprehensive pre-processing procedure. All the scans in the dataset have been manually cleaned and aligned to a common reference system. In addition, we devised a pre-processing stage to automatically extract point clouds from the scans and enrich them with virtual defects. We experimentally compare several state-of-the-art point cloud completion networks and identify the two most promising models. Finally, expert surgeons evaluated the best-performing network on a clinical case. Our results show how casting the creation of personalized implants as a problem of shape completion is a promising approach for automatizing this complex task
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
