The theatrical work of João das Neves in the Grupo Opinião
Having conducted a master\'s degree research in which the objective was to examine the constitutive aspects of João das Neves\' critical thought based on the investigation and analysis of his theatrical works in the years prior to 1964, the project was to give historical continuity to this study in doctoral dissertation now presented, focusing on his work in the political context of the Brazilian military regime. In this way, the intention was to verify which aspects of his thought remain and which prevail in his proposals in Grupo Opinião. To this end, different aspects of Neves\' political engagement were analyzed in order to understand the role played by the artist in the creation and maintenance of the group between 1964 and 1980. In this sense, the following investigated themes to be noted are: the group\'s first play, Show Opinião; the Concourse and Seminar of Dramaturgy Opinião, conceived and organized by João das Neves in the 1970s; the writing and staging of O Último Carro, possibly the author\'s most known play; his appropriation of the Brecht\'s idea of model; Neves\' research on the German radio play and the artistic interchange initiated and spread by him between Brazil and Germany; the scenic-dramaturgical particularities of Mural Mulher, the last play performed at Opinião; his definition of documentary and popular theater. In addition to João das Neves\' plays and critical fortune, the analyses were built on primary documents surveyed, on statements and testimonials from the author at different times, and on interviews conducted with him. In addition to João das Neves\' plays and critical fortune, the analyses were built on primary documents surveyed, on statements and testimonials from the author at different times, and on interviews conducted with him. To conclude, it is Worth mentioning that showing the transformations of the dictatorship period, the examination of all theatrical work of João das Neves in Grupo Opinião presents a communion of the brazilian cultural process within the last five decades, providing a vast contribuition, nontheless, to a viable compreehension of the artistic scenario we see nowadays
The Tennessee Williams´ Unknown, and Experimental Six One-act Late Plays from 1960 to 1980 decades: Approach, Analysis and Context of Female Characters.
This thesis aims at analyzing the female characters in six of Tennessee Williams\' late plays written between 1960 and 1980: [The Mutilated, I Can\'t Imagine Tomorrow, A Cavalier for Milady, Kirche, Küche, Kinder (An Outrage for the Stage), Now the Cats with Jeweled Claws and The One Exception]. The analyzes focus on the historical and political aspects in these plays and avoid the reiteration of hegemonic readings of the author\'s canonical play, which tend to stress aspects such as the one of the so called psychological realism of his works, the parallels between themes and characters in Tennessee Williams´ plays and in his biography, and the glamour of the Hollywood versions of his plays. The analyses of Tennessee Williams\'s experimentalism in the aforementioned plays discuss the innovations that stem from the context of counterculture, rather than the idea that he is na essentially realistic author. The six plays studied in this thesis show that, in spite of living in a countercultural context, women were still unable to free themselves from the socially imposed roles. The parodic representation of female characters in these plays is a critical response to this. As a complementary element of dramaturgical analysis, these analyzes will also deal with the characteristics these plays eventually share with the most important sources of theatrical experimentalism, taking in consideration the author\'s stylistic lyricism. These elements are the ones of the epic theatre, of the theatre of cruelty and of the so called theatre of the absurd. In the United States, they are re-contextualized as metaphysical existentialism, the camp and the grotesque
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
The role of the epic in Elmer Rice\'s dramaturgy: an analysis of Street Scene
O estudo dos recursos tanto épicos como dramáticos no texto dessa peça nos levou à hipótese de que aí teríamos, na verdade, uma das marcas principais da dramaturgia de Rice: o uso de estruturas formais do âmbito do drama coexistindo com a função épica associada à representação crítica das grandes questões da classe trabalhadora e da sociedade estadunidense à sua voltaStarting from the analysis of the form and content represented in the play Street Scene, written in 1928, this thesis aims at understanding the role of the epic in the dramaturgy of Elmer Rice [1892-1967]. In his works, the author constantly deals with issues of a social nature and often presents a strong criticism of the capitalist system, characteristics situated within the scope of the epic, but many of his plays were staged in the great professional theater circuit on Broadway, where drama was predominant, and he never completely discarded the dramatic form in his dramaturgical creations. This analysis of Street Scene allows us to identify that, in fact, the text is not characterized as a dramatic work in the strict sense, and that it presents strong epic aspects linked to the representation of social and economic issues, to the conditions of life and survival of the working class and the criticism of the capitalist system in the context of the United States of America. The study of both epic and dramatic resources in the text of this play led us to the hypothesis that this would be, in fact, one of the main features of Rice\'s dramaturgy: the use of formal structures within the scope of drama coexisting with the epic function associated with the critical representation of the great issues of the working class and the American societ
Road towards the end: study on Camino Real by Tennessee Williams followed by an essay on playwriting
The first consists of a study regarding the play Camino Real by Tennessee Williams, published in 1953, arguably considered the most controversial of his plays. Against the grain of the psychological lens through which his work is dominantly viewed, we set out to investigate dramaturgical resources via which American History and imperialist foreign policy can be seen in the play. As we aim to demonstrate, through epic-lyrical procedures and influenced by many genres, Camino Real is able to dialectally express American History\'s past, present and future, thus showing its strong contemporary relevance. The study is then followed by an epilogue in the second part, which is a reflexive essay. We discuss how the study of Williams\' play is intertwined with the creation of another play, O fim é sempre pop [The end is always pop], written by the author of this research, who also works as a playwright. The goal is to reflect on the academic and artistic processes, then using the latter play as corpus, which we consider doubly the result and part of this researc

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Drama and fiction: a study of its links and projections in the theater of Tennessee Williams [1911-1983]
The purpose of this thesis is to prove the expressive number of short stories by Tennessee Williams, relatively high to be composed of around fifty short stories which represented in various manners the genesis of later theater plays, besides highlighting cases of plays seen/ considered sources of short-story telling or even screenplays written by the author. The supremacy of episodes in which the short stories are seen as fictional sources of dramaturgic works by the writer was confirmed by verifying and analyzing the theater and the production/creation of short stories by Tennessee Williams. By doing the analytical study of three theater plays in one-act and a three-act play [fulllength play] it was possible to establish the relationship between the theater plays and the structure of the short stories as well as present a more profound understanding of the formal processes and the links between the plays and his short stories: The Dark Room [O Quarto Escuro, theater play and short story, approximately 1939/1940], Something Unspoken [Algo não Dito, play, 1953] and Happy August the Tenth [Feliz Dez de Agosto, short story, 1970]; Twenty-seven Wagons Full of Cotton [Vinte e sete Carros de Algodão, short story, 1935] and the one-act play with the same title [written before 1946] e The Night of the Iguana [A Noite do Iguana: short story written between 1946-48 and the play with the same title, in one act, in 1959 and in three acts, in 1961]. Therefore, the dialogue among various types of art was studied, besides the sources of inspiration of the playwright and the representations of history on drama and in his short stories investigated
