Loggia del Capitanio; cropped elevation, left side (plate T XIV); [Physical descrip: 4 v. : ill., plans; 24 cm. Edition source: University of Toronto Libraries] In 1776 Bertotti Scamozzi published the first volume of Le fabbriche e i disegni di Andrea Palladio raccolti e illustrati. The idea of producing a luxurious edition of Palladio's works for an international, especially English, market began in 1770, when Pietro Edwards first discussed it with Bertotti Scamozzi, the scholar Antonio Locatelli and probably also the collector and patron John Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute. The aim of the project was to clarify Palladio's ideas for his admirers and imitators, to solve problems of attribution and reconstruction of incomplete or destroyed works, and to resolve the question of the difference between Palladio's completed buildings and those shown in the plates of his treatise I quattro libri. Bertotti Scamozzi erroneously viewed the drawings in I quattro libri as plans representing Palladio's original wishes. He therefore undertook a philological analysis aiming to restore the 'old' Palladio: he collated all the editions of I quattro libri, comparing the designs shown in those plates that he considered most reliable and consistently Palladian with the corresponding buildings and noting the differences in execution. The results of his work were recorded in the drawings published in Le fabbriche. Source: Grove Art Online; http://www.groveart.com/ (accessed 1/25/2008
On the qualitative analysis of the solutions of a mathematical model of social dynamics
This work deals with a family of dynamical systems which were introduced in [M.L. Bertotti, M. Delitala, From discrete kinetic and stochastic game theory to modelling complex systems in applied sciences, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 7 (2004) 1061–1084], modelling the evolution of a population of interacting individuals, distinguished by their social state. The existence of certain uniform distribution equilibria is proved and the asymptotic trend is investigate

Bertotti-Robinson Geometry and Supersymmetry
The role of Bertotti-Robinson geometry in the attractor mechanism of extremal black holes is described for the case of N = 2 supersymmetry. Its implication for a model-independent derivation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy formula is discussed. The role of Bertotti-Robinson geometry in the attractor mechanism of extremal black holes is described for the case of N = 2 supersymmetry. LAS: a software platform to support oncological data management
The rapid technological evolution in the biomedical and molecular oncology fields is providing research laboratories with huge amounts of complex and heterogeneous data. Automated systems are needed to manage and analyze this knowledge, allowing the discovery of new information related to tumors and the improvement of medical treatments. This paper presents the Laboratory Assistant Suite (LAS), a software platform with a modular architecture designed to assist researchers throughout diverse laboratory activities. The LAS supports the management and the integration of heterogeneous biomedical data, and provides graphical tools to build complex analyses on integrated data. Furthermore, the LAS interfaces are designed to ease data collection and management even in hostile environments (e.g., in sterile conditions), so as to improve data qualit

Nariai, Bertotti-Robinson, and anti-Nariai solutions in higher dimensions
We find all higher dimensional solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory that are the topological product of two manifolds of constant curvature. These solutions include the higher dimensional Nariai, Bertotti-Robinson and anti-Nariai solutions and the anti–de Sitter Bertotti-Robinson solutions with toroidal and hyperbolic topology (Plebański-Hacyan solutions). We give explicit results for any dimension D>~4. These solutions are generated from the appropriate extremal limits of the higher dimensional near-extreme black holes in de Sitter and anti–de Sitter backgrounds. Thus, we also find the mass and charge parameters of higher dimensional extreme black holes as a function of the radius of the degenerate horizon
Connecting Gravitational Perturbations: from Bertotti-Robinson to Extreme Reissner-Nordstrom
We study spherically symmetric spacetime perturbations induced by a neutral scalar in the near-horizon region of extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black holes. For the unperturbed black hole, the near-horizon region is given by another exact solution of the Einstein-Maxwell equations, namely the Bertotti-Robinson spacetime. Our aim is to extend this connection beyond the background level and identify perturbations of a Bertotti-Robinson spacetime as near-horizon perturbations of an extreme Reissner-Nordstrom black hole. We explain that explicit identification of the perturbative solutions to the two different backgrounds can only work in appropriate gauges. For this reason, we first solve the two perturbation problems in the most general spherically symmetric gauges and then find the necessary gauge conditions for matching the Reissner-Nordstrom and Bertotti-Robinson perturbative solutions in the near-horizon limit.23 pages; v2: minor edits, appendix adde
