Data Mining and InformationVisualization: a result+data approach
There is a common agreement that integration of Data Mining and
Information Visualization techniques can provide the right tools
needed to handle the huge data collection we are faced with
today. Data Mining and Information Visualization represent different
approaches to solve a common problem: extract knowledge from data. The
joint usage of these techniques can supply the lack that each one has
in reaching the goal. In this paper we present a system in which the
exploitation of both Data Mining and Information Visualization
techniques provides a high degree of synergy and interaction, relating
results coming from Data Mining activities with the underling data
from which such results come up in a intuitive and usable manner
Yap is regulated by phosphorylation at the G2/M transition
Yap is a small protein that acts as a co-activator of transcription. It has been shown to interact with many and diverse transcription factors and as a result of these promiscuous interactions, Yap has been described to have a role in many cellular events, including apoptosis, proliferation, and differentiation. For this reason, it is described to have a role both in tumor suppression and transformation. However, the function of Yap in the regulation of the cell cycle has not been investigated so far. Here we demonstrate that Yap is phosphorylated at the G2/M, both in physiologic mitotic cells and in cells arrested in mitosis by microtubules-targeting drugs. We show that Yap is not recruited onto the chromatin during mitosis and does not localize to any mitotic organelles. In addition, we have noticed that de-phosphorylation of Yap occurs before the entry into G1. These data give an indication that Yap may have a role in the exit from mitosis, and place a solid foundation for characterizing the function(s) of Yap during this event
A methodological framework for automatic clutter reduction in Visual Analytics
Visual Analitycs manages billions of data records and, in such a case, pure Information Visualization reveals its limits in terms of expressivity and scalability. In this paper we deal with the critical issue of visual clutter reduction, presenting a general framework for analyzing and reducing clutter in infovis techniques. We detail our proposal using two running examples, i.e., 2D scatterplots and parallel coordinates. © 2009 by Knowledge Systems Institute Graduate School
By chance is not enough: preserving relative density through non uniform sampling
Dealing with visualizations containing large data set is a challenging issue and, in the field of Information Visualization, almost every visual technique reveals its drawback when visualizing large number of items. To deal with this problem we introduce a formal environment, modeling in a virtual space the image features we are interested in (e.g, absolute and relative density, clusters, etc.) and we define some metrics able to characterize the image decay. Such metrics drive our automatic techniques (i.e., not uniform sampling) rescuing the image features and making them visible to the user. In this paper we focus on 2D scatter-plots, devising a novel non uniform data sampling strategy able to preserve in an effective way relative densities
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Benign congenital hypotonia with uniform type 1 fibers and aspecific ultrastructural changes in the muscle: a case with esophagus involvement
We report the case of a child with congenital neuromuscular disease characterized by neonatal onset of symptoms, a floppy syndrome with marked weakness of facial muscles, palsy of the velum pendulum and hypomotility of the esophagus. EMG was inconclusive. Serum enzyme levels were within the normal range. Muscle biopsy specimen showed uniform type 1 fibers, smallness of the occasionally observed type 2 fibers and slight ultrastructural changes in many fibers. On the basis of the clinical and morphological features we have included the present case among the group of non-progressive congenital neuromuscular diseases
