Modified Halloysite as Catalyst for the Conversion of Hydroxymethylfurfural to Furandicarboxylic Acid: A DFT Investigation
The reaction steps involved in the 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid conversion by means of H2O2 were investigated employing a dedicated computational protocol based on density functional theory. The catalytic environment of choice was a molecular model representing a portion of the halloysite nanotube outer surface, functionalized by an organosilane, the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, whose amino group bonds one gold atom. At this stage of the investigation, the process was fully detailed in terms of the interactions between the reaction intermediates and the catalyst, and the reaction standard free energies. In addition, the energy barriers of the elementary steps involving the hydrogen migration from the adsorbed organic species to the gold atom were analyzed. On the basis of the interaction geometries, a certain distinction among the preferred reaction path can be inferred as a function of the net negative charge characterizing the catalyst outer surface. Since the inner surface of halloysite can represent the acid environment needed to obtain 5-hydroxymethylfurfural through dehydration of fructose, the present study is framed in a wider research field where the possibility to consider functionalized halloysite as one-pot reactor for the valorization of biomass is explored.A novel catalyst architecture is proposed with potential one-pot activity for the valorization of biomass. It exploits the gold coordination on the organosilane functionalization in the outer surface of the halloysite spiral nanotube, to be coupled with the acid catalytic activity of its inner surface. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Zero-Shot Image Retrieval with Human Feedback
Composed image retrieval extends traditional content-based image retrieval (CBIR) combining a query image with additional descriptive text to express user intent and specify supplementary requests related to the visual attributes of the query image. This approach holds significant potential for e-commerce applications, such as interactive multimodal searches and chatbots. In our demo, we present an interactive composed image retrieval system based on the SEARLE approach, which tackles this task in a zero-shot manner efficiently and effectively. The demo allows users to perform image retrieval iteratively refining the results using textual feedback
Effective conditioned and composed image retrieval combining CLIP-based features
Conditioned and composed image retrieval extend CBIR systems by combining a query image with an additional text that expresses the intent of the user, describing additional requests w.r.t. the visual content of the query image. This type of search is interesting for e-commerce applications, e.g. to develop interactive multimodal searches and chatbots. In this demo, we present an interactive system based on a combiner network, trained using contrastive learning, that combines visual and textual features obtained from the OpenAI CLIP network to address conditioned CBIR. The system can be used to improve e-shop search engines. For example, considering the fashion domain it lets users search for dresses, shirts and toptees using a candidate start image and expressing some visual differences w.r.t. its visual content, e.g. asking to change color, pattern or shape. The proposed network obtains state-of-the-art performance on the FashionIQ dataset and on the more recent CIRR dataset, showing its applicability to the fashion domain for conditioned retrieval, and to more generic content considering the more general task of composed image retrieval
Improving Zero-Shot Generalization of Learned Prompts via Unsupervised Knowledge Distillation
Quantum extreme learning of molecular potential energy surfaces and force fields
Quantum machine learning algorithms are expected to play a pivotal role in quantum chemistry simulations in the immediate future. One such key application is the training of a quantum neural network to learn the potential energy surface and force field of molecular systems. We address this task by using the quantum extreme learning machine paradigm. This particular supervised learning routine allows for resource-efficient training, consisting of a simple linear regression performed on a classical computer. We have tested a setup that can be used to study molecules of any dimension and is optimized for immediate use on NISQ devices with a limited number of native gates. We have applied this setup to three case studies: lithium hydride, water, and formamide, carrying out both noiseless simulations and actual implementation on IBM quantum hardware. Compared to other supervised learning routines, the proposed setup requires minimal quantum resources, making it feasible for direct implementation on quantum platforms, while still achieving a high level of predictive accuracy compared to simulations. Our encouraging results pave the way towards the future application to more complex molecules, being the proposed setup scalable
Zero-Shot Composed Image Retrieval with Textual Inversion
Composed Image Retrieval (CIR) aims to retrieve a target image based on a query composed of a reference image and a relative caption that describes the difference between the two images. The high effort and cost required for labeling datasets for CIR hamper the widespread usage of existing methods, as they rely on supervised learning. In this work, we propose a new task, Zero-Shot CIR (ZS-CIR), that aims to address CIR without requiring a labeled training dataset. Our approach, named zero-Shot composEd imAge Retrieval with textuaL invErsion (SEARLE), maps the visual features of the reference image into a pseudoword token in CLIP token embedding space and integrates it with the relative caption. To support research on ZSCIR, we introduce an open-domain benchmarking dataset named Composed Image Retrieval on Common Objects in context (CIRCO), which is the first dataset for CIR containing multiple ground truths for each query. The experiments show that SEARLE exhibits better performance than the baselines on the two main datasets for CIR tasks, FashionIQ and CIRR, and on the proposed CIRCO. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
