Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

Spatial and population ecology of giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) in a Cerrado Ecological Station, São Paulo, Brazil
No full textTamanduás-bandeira (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) são mamíferos de ampla distribuição, porém suas populações sofrem diversas ameaças, que colaboram para sua presença em listas vermelhas internacionais, nacionais e regionais. É um animal de grande porte especialista alimentar em insetos sociais, que contribui para a dinâmica dos ecossistemas. Apesar de sua importância, a espécie é pouco conhecida, principalmente no que tange ao entendimento ecológico de populações em áreas com influência antrópica. Este estudo teve como objetivos (i) estimar as áreas de vida e de uso de tamanduás-bandeira em Estação Ecológica de domínio Cerrado com influência antrópica, além de investigar a organização espacial dos indivíduos, (ii) identificar os hábitats que compõem as áreas de vida e avaliar se houve seleção em diferentes escalas, (iii) testar a proposta de identificação de indivíduos por armadilhas fotográficas, e então, analisar aspectos populacionais. Oito tamanduás-bandeira foram monitorados via GPSIridium, sendo sete concomitantemente de maio a setembro de 2015 na Estação Ecológica de Santa Bárbara - EESB. A área de vida e a área de uso foram de 3,41 km² e de 0,65 km², respectivamente. Machos tiveram áreas de vida maiores e maior atividade. O compartilhamento do espaço foi baixo e os machos sobrepuseram suas áreas às das fêmeas. Machos e fêmeas estiveram em proximidade. A seleção de hábitat foi direcionada para savana e o reflorestamento foi evitado. Para testar um método de identificação individual, marcas de pelagem foram caracteres diagnósticos nas fotos de 18 estações de armadilhas fotográficas. A população foi estimada em 16 tamanduásbandeira, em uma densidade de 0,4 ind/km². Tendências populacionais foram simuladas em diversos cenários, resultando um futuro drástico para os tamanduás-bandeira da EESB. Tamanduás-bandeira, possivelmente, são incapazes de persistir em hábitats compostos só por ambientes alterados. A baixa taxa de persistência populacional na área de estudo em longo prazo chama atenção especial. Medidas mitigadoras dos impactos antrópicos sobre a espécie devem ser estabelecidas.Giant anteaters (Myrmecophaga tridactyla) are mammals with a wide range and their populations are threatened by several causes, which have led to the inclusion of the species in international, national and regional red lists. This large-sized species feeds exclusively on social insects, contributing to ecosystem dynamics. Despite its importance, the species is poorly known, mainly in what concerns the ecological understanding of populations in areas with anthropogenic influence. The goals of this study were (i) to estimate the home range and core areas of giant anteaters at an Ecological Station with Cerrado habitat influenced by anthropogenic actions, as well as to investigate the spatial organization of the individuals, (ii) to identify the habitats that compose their home ranges and, to evaluate multi-scale habitat selection, (iii) to test a method of individual identification using camera traps, and use it to analyze population trends. Eight giant anteaters were tracked by GPS-Iridium, seven of them concomitantly from May to September 2015 at Santa Bárbara Ecological Station - SBES. Home range and core area were estimated at 3.41 km² and 0.65 km², respectively. Males had a larger home range and were more active than females. The range overlap was low, and the home ranges of males and females overlapped. Males and females were in proximity to each other. Habitat selection was directed to savannas, while exotic forestry areas were avoided. To test a method of individual identification, fur marks were used as diagnostic characters in photos taken by 18 camera traps. The population size was estimated at 16 giant anteaters and its density at 0.4 ind/km². Population trends were simulated under different scenarios resulting in a drastic future to giant anteaters of SBES. The species is, probably, incapable to persist in areas composed only by altered habitats. The low probability of survival of the population calls special attention. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
