Underneath the Observational Snapshot: Looking For Sense and Meaning Behind the First Impressions of a Learning Interaction

Education practitioners, including Ofsted inspectors and Teacher Educators, try to make sense of behaviour in the classroom by observing the interaction of teachers and learners. They make judgements about what is good teaching, what is bad learner behaviour and what are inclusive and effective learning experiences. This article argues that such observations are inadequate for assessing and evaluating learning behaviour and insufficient to enable teachers to develop their own personalised teaching and learning strategies and their confidence as professional teachers. The article was written in response to examples of Further Education (FE) teachers describing the college classroom as a war zone and a battlefield (Lebor, 2013). The author argues that such metaphors reinforce the notion that teachers and learners are situated at opposing sides of an education institution with differing interests. They also ignore the position of the teacher as being a learner too. The author advocates using an existentialist approach to understanding and reflecting on the learning process. She models strategies she has used herself to attempt to step outside the conventional paradigm of learning in college and create a new framework for reflecting on what is good behaviour from a teacher and good behaviour from a learner

Copyright and Creativity: Authors and Photographers

The history of the occupations “author” and “photographer” provides an insightful perspective on copyright and creativity. The concept of the romantic author, associated with personal creative genius, gained prominence in the eighteenth century. However, in the U.S. in 1900 only about three thousand persons professed their occupation to be “author.” Self-professed “photographers” were then about ten times as numerous as authors. Being a photographer was associated with manufacturing and depended only on mastering technical skills and making a living. Being an author, in contrast, was an elite status associated with science and literature. Across the twentieth century, the number of writers and authors grew much more rapidly than the number of photographers. The relative success of writers and authors in creating jobs seems to have depended not on differences in copyright or possibilities for self- production, but on greater occupational innovation. Creativity in organizing daily work is an important form of creativity.occupations, authors, photographers, copyright law, economic history

Stainless steel in Sweden : antidumping attacks, good international citizenship

This report analyzes the economics, legal, and business logic of the United States, Sweden, and the European Community regarding the stainless steel industry. Trade policies and legal cases are analyzed and presented to support the author's conclusion that good economics, international competitiveness, private ownership, and limited support from a government that demonstrates good international citizenship are not enough to defend an industry against the application of antidumping or other import-restricting policy.Water and Industry,Roads&Highways,Primary Metals,Banks&Banking Reform,Mining&Extractive Industry (Non-Energy)

Optimizing Subtalar Arthrodesis: A Human Cadaveric Evaluation of a Novel Partially-Threaded Screw Combination in the Delta Configuration

    No full text
Background and Objectives: Despite the established role of subtalar joint arthrodesis (SJA) for treatment of subtalar osteoarthritis, achieving bone union remains challenging, with up to 46% non-union rates. Adequate compression and stable fixation are crucial for successful outcomes, with internal screw fixation being the gold standard for SJA. The delta configuration, featuring highly divergent screws, offers stability, however, it can result in hardware irritation in 20–30% of patients. Solutions to solve this complication include cannulated compression screw (CCS) countersinking or cannulated compression headless screw (CCHS) application. The aim of this biomechanical study was to investigate the stability of a delta configuration for SJA utilizing either a combination of a posterior CCHS and an anterior CCS or a standard two-CCS combination. Materials and Methods: Twelve paired human cadaveric lower legs were assigned pairwise to two groups for SJA using either two CCSs (Group 1) or one posterior CCHS and one anterior CCS (Group 2). All specimens were tested under progressively increasing cyclic loading to failure, with monitoring of the talocalcaneal movements via motion tracking. Results: Initial stiffness did not differ significantly between the groups, p = 0.949. Talocalcaneal movements in terms of varus–valgus deformation and internal–external rotation were significantly bigger in Group 1 versus Group 2, p ≤ 0.026. Number of cycles until reaching 5° varus–valgus deformation was significantly higher in Group 2 versus Group 1, p = 0.029. Conclusions: A delta-configuration SJA utilizing a posterior CCHS and an anterior CCS is biomechanically superior versus a standard configuration with two CCSs. Clinically, the use of a posterior CCHS could prevent protrusion of the hardware in the heel, while an anterior CCS could facilitate less surgical time and thus less complication rates

OBS! An FPT-Algorithm for Longest Common Subsequence Parameterized by the Maximum Number of Deletions

In the NP-hard Longest Common Subsequence problem (LCS), given a set of strings, the task is to find a string that can be obtained from every input string using as few deletions as possible. LCS is one of the most fundamental string problems with numerous applications in various areas, having gained a lot of attention in the algorithms and complexity research community. Significantly improving on an algorithm by Irving and Fraser [CPM'92], featured as a research challenge in a 2014 survey paper, we show that LCS is fixed-parameter tractable (FPT) when parameterized by the maximum number of deletions per input string. Given the relatively moderate running time of our algorithm (linear time when the parameter is a constant) and small parameter values to be expected in several applications, we believe that our purely theoretical analysis could finally pave the way to a new, exact and practically useful algorithm for this notoriously hard string problem.Discrete Mathematics and Optimizatio
