Natural Disasters in Bulgaria – Crises Events for the Period 2010–2018
The paper presents an overview of the occurrence of crisis events from natural processes and phenomena in our country. Official data from the National Statistical Institute covering the period 2010–2018 were researched. The results show that natural disasters are among the most common causes of crises. Over half of the reported crises of a natural origin are the result of floods
25 years of Scientific and Educational Cooperation between the Department of Natural Sciences at New Bulgarian University and the Space Research and Technology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences
The paper presents the results of the scientific and educational cooperation in the field of earth sciences and ecology between the Department of Natural Sciences at New Bulgarian University (NBU) and the Space Research and Technology Institute at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (SRTI-BAS) for the period 1996-2021
Survey of the Use of the System for Separate Collection of Household Waste from Packaging in the Municipality of Stara Zagora
Separate waste collection and recycling are at the basis of today’s wastemanagement. This helps the reduction of landfilled waste, which aims to reduce soil, water, and airpollution, on the one hand, and to cut down on the depletion of resources for new production, on theother. A large portion of household waste comes from the so-called “widespread wasteâ€, whichincludes packaging waste. Legislation at European and national levels sets specific goals toovercome this problem. Separate waste collection is carried out by municipalities via wasterecycling companies, which set up and operate systems for separate collection. Citizens are at theheart of the efficient functioning of these systems. A separate waste collection system of this kindhas been established in the municipality of Stara Zagora in Bulgaria. The objective of this paper isto present the results of a questionnaire survey of the system’s users to establish their awareness andattitudes regarding the process of separate waste collection. The results can be used to improve thesystem
Data analysis of the mid-winter census of wintering aquatic birds on the territory of Ramsar sites along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast for the period 2012 – 2021
Wetlands along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast are important wintering points for aquatic birds during the winter period, which is why the site is included in the mid-winter census, which is part of ornithological monitoring in our country. Based on the results obtained from it, an assessment of the ornithological status can be made and the environmental factors influencing it can be analyzed.
The purpose of the study is to present a summary and analysis of census data on the species composition and number of waterfowl in the region of the Ramsar sites on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast for the period 2012 – 2021, which will confirm the ecological significance of these sites and the need for their protection
Landslide crises in Bulgaria for the period 2010 – 2020
Crises, caused by landslides, are registered every year in Bulgaria. Official statistic data analysis for the period 2010 – 2020 show a reduction in their number after the reported peak in 2015. Nearly half of the total number of crises in our country are registered in only three regions located in two landslide areas
Ecological Tourism Opportunities in the Area of Ognyanovo Dam
The dam of Ognyanovo is located in the Eastern Sofia Plain, only 40 km awayfrom the capital of Bulgaria. It is one of the country’s most beautiful places – full of biodiversity, especially as regards avifauna species. An important factor which makes the dam a special object ofscientific and tourist interest is its location on one of the main bird migration routes: the ViaAristotelis. For three consecutive years, the area’s fauna potential has been studied andsignificant biodiversity has been identified. This study aims to explore the opportunities for ecotourism development there
Mobile amateur applications for marking and tracking birds as a tool for protecting them and for development of ornithological tourism
In terms of avifauna richness, Bulgaria ranks second in Europe after Spain, which makes it an interesting destination for ornithological tourism. The development of mobile technologies has made it easier to record and track ornithological observations and create databases for them. In this study, a selection of mobile amateur applications for bird marking and tracking has been made, and the usefulness of their databases is discussed both for bird conservation and for tourism purposes
Educational ecotourism in Bulgaria - opportunities to expand good practices
Educational ecotourism involves travel with learning experiences focused on environmental protection and natural resources sustainable use. The research purpose is to indicate opportunities for good practices expanding in offering educational ecological tourism with an ornithological orientation in Western Bulgaria, along the route of the Via Aristotelis transcontinental bird migration route. Three well-developed destinations have been studied - Kresna Gorge, Eastern Rhodopes, Vrachanski Balkan Natural Park. A proposal has been made to expand their scope by increasing the tourist attractiveness of the Ognyanovo dam as a destination for practicing educational ecological tourism with an ornithological orientation based on an analysis of existing good practices
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
