The Slovak topos of tinker in Czech literature : (J.K. Tyl and Slovak question in the first half of the 19th century)

    No full text
The paper explores the topos of tinker in the works of two Czech authors: J. K. Chmelenský\u27s libretto for the eponymous opera by F. Škroup (1826) and J. K. Tyl\u27s short story Pomněnky z Roztěže (1838, Roztěž forget-me-nots). Expressing Czech-Slovak mutuality, this theme combined Romantic sensibility, folkloric exoticism and patriotic ideology. In the Czech milieu, the tinker was ideated, rather sentimentally, as a particular type of Slovak patriot. Thus in J. K. Chmelenský\u27s dramatic libretto, the tinker defends his home and native language, and similarly, in Tyl\u27s story, which was later included in the cycle of Kusy mého srdce (1844, Pieces of My Heart), the tinker represents love for his country, the conflict of "reason" and "heart". It was in this character that Tyl "relinquished" the Máchaian concept of discontentedness. The tinker, remembering his young love, is depicted by the author not only as a patriot but also a true beggar, distressed vagrant. What distinguishes him linguistically is the fact that in the magazine the man speaks Czech, while in the book edition his speech is "rendered in Slovak". It was the first time that, one year after Štúr had originated the Slovak language, Tyl made an artistically convincing admission of the language separation. Subsequently, in the early 1840s, Tyl came to the conclusion that Slovak endeavours to establish an independent language were not to impede the traditional cooperation with Czechs who could understand Slovak in a work of art

Key Considerations for Designing Clinical Studies to Evaluate Digital Health Solutions

    No full text
Evidence of clinical impact is critical to unlock the potential of digital health solutions (DHSs), yet many solutions are failing to deliver positive clinical results. We argue in this viewpoint that this failure is linked to current approaches to DHS evaluation design, which neglect numerous key characteristics (KCs) requiring specific scientific and design considerations. We first delineate the KCs of DHSs: (1) they are implemented at health care system and patient levels; (2) they are “complex” interventions; (3) they can drive multiple clinical outcomes indirectly through a multitude of smaller clinical benefits; (4) their mechanism of action can vary between individuals and change over time based on patient needs; and (5) they develop through short, iterative cycles—optimally within a real-world use context. Following our objective to drive better alignment between clinical evaluation design and the unique traits of DHSs, we then provide methodological suggestions that better address these KCs, including tips on mechanism-of-action mapping, alternative randomization methods, control-arm adaptations, and novel end-point selection, as well as innovative methods utilizing real-world data and platform research

In the article there were analyzed the legal norms concerning shrines included in common law and particular law of the diocese of Kalisz. The Author noticed that the shrines are sacred places to which people make pilgrimage and have lots of functions, this is why the legislator of the First Synod of Diocese of Kalisz, which took place in 2007-2009, regulated this issue in particular law. The Author presented the term of „shrine” and indicated material and formal element. The legislator in the Code distinguished a diocesan shrine, a national shrine and an international shrine, while the legislator in diocese of Kalisz made different classification. The Author indicated what the statutes of the shrine should regulate in particular to efficiently administrate the shrine, there was also presented the authority competent to approve these statutes. There were presented functions of the shrine curator, who is head a shrine

    Philosophy – autonomy and domination

    No full text
The purpose of the paper is take a look from the perspective of the field theory of Pierre Bourdieu at the history of the Polish post-war philosophy with special attention given to the so-called Christian philosophy. In reference to Bourdieu’s research practice, the author postulates application of research strategies of the sociology of science/philosophy to historical and philosophical studies with a belief that they enhance the picture of philosophical dynamics of the past. From this point of view, the author focuses on relations between the field of Christian philosophy and the field of church authority, exposing the issue of philosophy’s autonomy

Stefan Swieżawski – warunek możliwości historiografii filozoficznych problemów

    No full text
The article addresses the problem of justifying the concept of historiography of philosophical problems understood as analogically identical throughout history. Initially, the author situates this concept in the context of the so-called Lublin School, pointing to the historical and philosophical background in which Stefan Swieżawski and Mieczysław Krąpiec formulated their idea of a “philosophical history of philosophy”, oriented towards the systematic study of recurring metaphysical questions. Then, the article considers Hans-Georg Gadamer’s criticism of the historical identity of philosophical problems, suggesting that the analogical identity proposed by Swieżawski can find theoretical support in the theory of analogy, developed in Thomism and by Izydora Dąmbska. The author also discusses specific examples of historical-theoretical research (Marek J. Siemek, Arthur O. Lovejoy, and Stanisław Judycki), showing how certain philosophical questions retain their identity despite historical transformations. Finally, the author considers the possibilities of extending and strengthening the arguments for such a historiography of problems in the light of Fernand Braudel’s concept of “long duration”.W artykule podjęto problem uzasadnienia koncepcji historiografii problemów filozoficznych rozumianych jako kwestie analogicznie tożsame na przestrzeni dziejów. Autor omawia również konkretne przykłady badań historyczno-teoretycznych (Marka J. Siemka, Arthura O. Lovejoya i Stanisława Judyckiego), pokazując, w jaki sposób pewne pytania filozoficzne zachowują swoją tożsamość pomimo historycznych przekształceń. Na koniec autor rozważa możliwości rozszerzenia i wzmocnienia argumentów na rzecz historiografii problemów przez koncepcję „długiego trwania” Fernanda Braudela

Investigating the fate of natural organic matter at a drinking water treatment plant in South Africa using optical spectroscopy and chemometric analysis

    No full text
The removal dynamics of biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) and natural organic matter (NOM) polarity fractions at a water treatment plant (WTP) in South Africa was studied using UV-Vis absorbance, fluorescence excitation-emission matrix, and two-dimensional synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS). This study gave insights into the transformation of NOM due to treatment processes. The objectives of the study were: (i) to use chemometric analysis and two-dimensional SFS correlations to investigate the evolution of NOM arising from treatment processes, and (ii) to access the chemical profile dynamics of polarity and BDOC fractions throughout the treatment train. The UV254 absorbance, which indicates aromaticity, reduced by 45%  along the WTP. Gaussian fitting of UV-Vis data showed a decreasing trend in intensity and number of bands along the treatment process. The removal efficiency of NOM components followed the order: humic-like (HL) > tyrosine-like (TYL) > fulvic-like (FL) > tryptophan-like (TPL) > microbial-like (MBL).  At the source, the relative distribution of the hydrophobic (HPO), hydrophilic (HPI), and transphilic (TPI) fractions was 45%, 31%, and 24%, respectively. The HPI was recalcitrant to treatment, and the TYL component of the HPI fraction was conjectured to be a disinfection byproduct limiting reagent. The HL and FL components of the BDOC fraction were the major substrates for bacterial growth. According to two-dimensional-SFS correlation, TYL, TPL, and MBL varied concurrently across the treatment stages. Used for the first time in South Africa, the robustness of a multi-dimensional approach of optical methods coupled with chemometric tools for the assessment of the fate of NOM along the treatment processes was revealed by this study
