Mediated Visibility as Making Vitriol Meaningful
When engaged in vitriol through digital media, users harm their peers not
only through the caustic nature of their words, but also by the way in which
they can make their targets visible to public scrutiny. Social platforms
and mobile devices enable individuals to author commentary about their
targets, but also compel other types of actors to join in (or to contest,
appropriate or derail) malicious exchanges. By focusing on highly visible
yet comparatively mundane forms of denunciation in China, Russia and
the United Kingdom, this chapter considers how vitriol can be manifest
as a form of civic engagement. These cases provide insight about a more
prevalent form of vigilantism that may be located at the margins of what
is considered acceptable in their respective social contexts

Dabigatran etexilate is an oral anticoagulant recognized as noninferior to LMWH. We aimed to assess the incidence of symptomatic venous thromboembolic events (VTEs) after discharge in patients who underwent joint replacement, using a hospital registry. Patients and methods: Patients who underwent total knee and hip arthroplasty between September 2011 and March 2015 were selected. Subcutaneous enoxaparin (30 mg twice daily) was given during hospitalization. At discharge, patients received either enoxaparin 30 mg twice daily/40 mg once daily or dabigatran 220 mg/150 mg once daily. Patients were seen or called at 2, 6, and 12 weeks after surgery. Outcomes were the number of VTEs, including deep venous thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and the number of major/minor bleeding events after discharge. Results: After discharge, 1468 patients were prescribed enoxaparin and 904 dabigatran (1396 total knee arthroplasty and 976 total hip arthroplasty patients). Mean age was 66±10 years, and 60% were female. The cumulative incidence of VTEs during the 12-week follow-up was 0.7%. One patient sustained a VTE during the switch window. Seven patients sustained a pulmonary embolism (0.3%). There was no statistical difference between the total knee arthroplasty and total hip arthroplasty groups. The incidence of major and minor bleeding events during follow-up was 0.3% and 30.3%, respectively. These events had a higher incidence in the dabigatran group compared to the enoxaparin group after discharge (p<0.05), but not between knee and hip replacement groups for major bleeding events. Conclusion: A pharmaceutical prophylaxis protocol using LMWH and dabigatran during the post-discharge period resulted in low incidences of VTE and equivalence between treatments. However, the increased number of major and minor bleeding events in patients taking dabigatran is of concern regarding the safety and needs to be evaluated using analyses adjusted for risk factors. Patient Care and Support Measures Overcome Reluctance to Initiate New Regimen Containing Enfuvirtide
Patients can be resistant to initiation of enfuvirtide therapy because of concerns about self-injection and related issues. Because the introduction of a new drug class can substantially enhance the efficacy of an antiretroviral regimen, supporting the patient in the introduction of enfuvirtide, a safe and efficacious agent in a new class, offers therapeutic benefits. In the present patient, who showed resistance to all three of the major antiretroviral drug classes, enfuvirtide was successfully introduced with clinic and peer support group assistance. The patient’s acceptance was enhanced by the use of a needle-free injection system (Biojector), with minimal side effects and significantly improved virological and immunological control
Social Media as Surveillance: Rethinking Visibility in a Converging World
First paragraph: In recent years, based on the employment of various surveillance technologies, there has been an extension and intensification of privacy threats and surveillance risks in economic, political, and cultural contexts. The Internet and new media are among these technologies. The fact that one can find Web 2.0 platforms such as Facebook (rank 2), YouTube (rank 3), LinkedIn (rank 8) and Twitter (rank 10) among the most frequently accessed websites worldwide indicates the enormous popularity of these sites (data source: Alexa Internet, 2013). It is therefore important to conduct theoretical and empirical studies of these research areas. In Social Media as Surveillance, Daniel Trottier (2013) makes an important contribution to this task. Along with Identity Problems in the Facebook Era (Routledge), it is Trottier’s second book within the field of new and digital media to be published in almost 1 year and shows how active and energetic this scholar is. It can be expected that he will provide many new and inspiring contributions to the academic community in the near future. The book looks at the rise of surveillance practices on social media, using Facebook as a case study. Drawing on in-depth interviews with different types of users, it underscores new practices, strategies, concerns and risks that are a direct consequence of living on social media. (p. 1) The author ‘concentrates on the process by which users manage their personal information on social media, while taking advantage of the information that others put up’ (p. 1). Trottier focuses his analysis on four different social groups, namely, individuals (such as students), institutions (such as universities), economic actor (such as marketers) and political actor (such as the police). The subsequent research questions are the subject of the book: How are sites like Facebook used by these four social groups to exchange personal information? What kind of dynamics exists between these four bodies? While the first question is treated in chapters 3 to 6 by analysing the social media usage of distinct actors in the context of surveillance, the second question is answered in the concluding chapter.Output Type: Book Revie
La "Nouvelle" sociologie de l'éducation en Grande-Bretagne
The new educational sociology in Great Britain ; an intellectual stream in decline. - The author thinks it is too soon to conclude that the « new » educational sociology movement is over. He discusses about the perspectives and limitations of works achieved until now and identifies research areas which are placed in the stream of the criticism having already been passed on these works.
The current study sheds light on the reception of 24 Préludes by François Dompierre, created by Alain Lefèvre on 14 July 2012 at Amphithéâtre Fernand-Lindsay of the Festival de Lanaudière. The evening, devoted to the discovery of a new work and the celebration of Quebec new music, was disrupted in the first half of the concert by applause from some parts of the audience, who felt justified in so doing by the virtuosity of the artist, even though the organizers of the Festival had requested to applause only at the intermission and at the end. In doing so, one of the strongest conventions of listening to classical music in concert (i.e., the idea of applauding only at the end of a work) became a source of social tension between those who wanted to applaud after each prelude and those who insisted on silence. In the end, silence was re-established after the eighth prelude, but only by resorting to the use of authority, which the author discusses in detail in order to understand the implications for the concert, the cultural scope and the historical dimension of such a situation. As a result, the very act of listening to a concert is called into question in terms of its aesthetic purpose. Moreover, the festival context for which Dompierre created the work must be taken into account for its relaxed listening atmosphere, providing the possibility for dissension between opposing values. For this reason, the study is ideally suited to the field of sociomusicology, a discipline that can analyze the fundamental conventions and the customs of our relationship to music, while highlighting the historical context of cultural acts such as listening to classical music.

Protein metabolism in the lactating sow
A series of experiments were conducted to examine factors affecting feed intake and protein metabolism in the lactating sow. The primiparous sow exhibits poor appetite during the initial phase of lactation in relation to her requirements for production. The early phase of lactation is associated with a high plasma tryptophan to branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) ratio. High plasma tryptophan to the branched chain amino acids is associated with increased tryptophan entry in the brain and serotonin secretion which in turn is involved in the depression of feed intake in other species. The effect of decreasing the ratio of tryptophan to the BCAA in the sow did not increase feed intake, but rather decreased it. The leaner genotype sows tended to respond to an increased dietary BCAA by minimizing body weight loss during lactation.Body composition during pregnancy was also examined as a factor affecting protein metabolism and feed intake during lactation. Body weight change, feed intake and protein degradation rates were affected by the gestation body weight gain. Gilts fed at a high energy level during pregnancy, 36% above recommended levels from NRC (1988), exhibited a reduced insulin response to feed intake during mid-gestation. During lactation, these gilts also demonstrated a low post-absorptive insulin concentration, insulin to glucagon molar ratio, and a high post-absorptive glucagon concentration. These factors were associated with a decreased feed intake throughout lactation, and an increased protein breakdown rate as measured by plasma three-methylhistidine kinetics.Another experiment confirmed that high-energy-fed gilts during gestation demonstrated a decreased responsiveness to insulin and a reduced tolerance to glucose prior to parturition, further confirming the altered protein metabolic activity in response to excess energy intake during pregnancy.A novel approach to quantify daily amino acids uptake by the lactating mammary gland was examined. A technique to cannulate the anterior venous system of the mammary gland was developed and daily amino acid extraction rates and uptakes were measured and estimated, respectively. Extraction rate for the first limiting amino acid, lysine, increased with advancing lactation. Valine was shown to be extracted at low rates due to its high arterial concentration. New amino acid requirement estimates are proposed, based on the mammary uptake approach.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T13:16:23Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 2
