Verdier Philippe. Demographic Shifts and Labour Force Participation Rates in Canada

Labour force participation rates vary greatly by age, with persons 55 and over having much lower participation rates than younger persons. Consequently, changes in the demographic composition of the population can exert a long-run effect on aggregate participation rates. In the third article of the symposium, Bob Dugan and Benoît Robidoux examine the impact of demographic shifts on labour force participation in Canada. They use an accounting framework and plausible trend participation rates for 16 demographic groups with source population estimates to estimate an aggregate structural participation rate for Canada. They find that the ageing of the population has already started to exert downward pressure on the aggregate participation rate in Canada due to longer life expectancy and the resulting growing proportion of the population in the low-participation rate 65 and over age group. The movement of the baby boom generation into the 65 and over group in coming years will intensify this trend. Between 1989 and 1997 they find that the demographic composition effect reduced the aggregate participation rate by almost 1 percentage point, and that from now to 2030 it will reduce the participation rate by an additional 8.5 points. Of course, greater than expected trend increases in labour force participation rates by older age groups could offset some of this composition effect. The authors point out that changes in demographic composition had virtually no effect on the participation rate in the 1990s in the United States as the share of the population 65 and over was stable. This situation reflects the fact that the United States became an “older” society earlier than Canada due to an earlier and smaller baby boom and a higher average age for immigrants. Dugan and Robidoux calculate a trend participation rate of 66.2 in 1997, 1.4 percentage points above the actual rate of 64.8 per cent. Based on this rate they conclude that about one half of the 2.7 point decline in the participation rate in the 1990s was structural and one half cyclical.Canada, Labour Force Participation, Labor Force Participation, Participation Rate, Labour Force Participation Rate, Labor Force Participation Rate, Age Structure, Age, Sex, Gender, Aging, Ageing

How resist dominated groups in Champagne, France? : the example of the wine growers and the employees from a french wine growing area

    No full text
This article deals with the political forms of resistance realized by both the Champagne wine growers and the employees of all that producing region of France. In Champagne, the trade association (CIVC), that represents the interests of both Champagne winegrowers (owner of the main part of the surfaces of the vineyards, produce and sell grapes) and Champagne Houses (market the biggest volumes of champagne), arranges the sharing of the value created between both of them. The employees working for these two actors are not represented in that trade association (CIVC) and are excluded from the negotiations which take place there. Then, the sharing of the value created is the object of resistances on behalf of the dominated groups. Both resist depending on their resources coming from their socialization, from temporal situations and from fields of intervention and negotiation in which they have access but also those of whom they intend to be deprived. We analyze data from both the media speech produced by the wine growers and an ethnography of the union committee. We show that, according to their resources, the two dominated groups build political ambiguous forms of resistance combining simulation and confrontationFil: Sevilla, Ariel. Paul Valéry and the search for poetic rhythm

    No full text
Throughout his theoretical writings, Valéry insists on two fundamental principles: poetic rhythm is undefinable and yet it is central to poetry. Although his verse practice evolves from irregularity to regularity, Valéry insists that predictable metrical forms are no guarantee of poeticity, and rejects the Romantic model of rhythmic mimesis based on the cosmos, nature or the human body. It is not by confirming the meaningfulness of regular patterns, therefore, that poetic rhythm signifies; rather, the complex overlapping of multiple, elusive and unanalysable rhythms provides a source of questions to which the answer is constantly deferred; and that, for Valéry, is the definition of poetry.Peer reviewe

The question of space is one of contemporary poetry’s major issues.  Space, however, a notion so commonly associated with text, and of which island would only be a particular hyponym, is a hybrid notion, a complex sensitive/tangible schema which also encompasses time, the subject, in other words a relationship between seeing and saying.  This is the reason why space, as it appears in the poem, in its processes of reference and textual organization, is part of the metaphorical horizon connecting real space, internal space and textual space. If the insular condition can help explain those choices, and the poetics of singular inflections, to the extent that certain motifs (closure, retreat, the elementary) could be made into insularity’s schemas, to speak of a relationship between poem and insularity is inevitably to confront two singular “realities”, language and space, and to describe thus implicitly an insular metaphor What of this insular metaphor?  What does it tell us about the poem and about the interiority it represents in that modernity of “I is another”, a modernity which Michel Collot splits in two sides, one, “hermetic”, advocating textual closure and one “hermeneutic”, seeking to “open the text to what surpasses it”.  The island, an ambivalent space, at once closure and endless opening on the horizon, could very well be a “fabulous horizon” for the poem, a metaphor leading to the imagining of interiority, a singular organization of “saying”, a dispositio from which originates a voice.  It is  these, at times ambiguous, meanings of the insular metaphor in modern and contemporary poetry ((Saint-John Perse, Jean-Claude Renard, Jean Laude, Yves Bonnefoy, Lorand Gaspar, Benoît Conort) that this article attempts to elucidate

    No full text

In a society marked by secularization, the Danielle Hervieu-leger’s concept of “exculturation” reports the process of “disconnection”, a kind of disruption between the plural social collective culture and that one of the church. Besides, in the public sphere, religion is regularly on the media limelight particularly in reference to its dysfunctions (secrets, pedophilia…). In 2012, a french television series called Ainsi soient-ils, produced and broadcasted by Arte, deals with religion at prime time. Characters quote short passages of the sacred texts; some biographies and theological studies (like those of Saint Augustin) are outlined. Profane texts or symbols also come to converse. This article questions this television series through the lens of the holy writings. Besides representations, we also want to enquire the various metatextual, intertextual and interdiscursive transactions that come forward throughout the episodes. This contribution aims to show the ability of a serial fiction to interrogate, to play with the sacred texts (often fossilized by the dogma and rituals) in order to suggest and provoke an ongoing social critical questioning on about both the contemporary believing and the social relationships
