Questione di confini: diritto, diritti e guerra in Michael Walzer

    No full text
By a comparative analysis of Walzer’ scientific works in the field “social criticism” and “just/unjust war”, the essay shows that the tension between the categories internal/ external is working in the complex of author arguments. Such a contraposition, examined from the strict perspective of the disciplinary languages, which articulate the “modern” moral-historical world, has to be considered constitutive of the separation between juridical and moral paradigm, social acting and communitarian belonging, reasons and meaning, critics and interpretation. Walzer’ attitude to contaminate disciplinary languages, on the contrary, make it impossible for him to investigate the aporetic overcoming from the juridical “boundaries” to political and cultural “frontier”

Building bridges: How to cope with the gap between today and tomorrow

The future results from what we do today, but also what we leave undone , no matter for what reasons. Many of our decisions ? especially those which concern the more distant future ? have far reaching consequences. These decisions must now, and in the future, be made in a turbulent environment both conciously and with regard to the consequences that our decisions and actions may have. Concerning European spatial perspectives, it is clear that progressing integration processes will lead to changed space-time structures. In this respect, inter-municipal and inter-regional competition for investment and employment are factors of central significance. While we will never have clear knowledge of the future, preventative thought is a prerequisite for preventative action. To recognize development early and then to assess and judge each chance and risk, is one of the best means of achieving success in the area of regional competition. Future orientation in organizations, as in planning processes, should be understood first as a process of structured communication. The basis of this is to take into consideration a large range of possible futures. Scenarios serve to prepare decisions; they don't replace decisions. Rather they make especially clear, what is sometimes forgotten or dispelled and what will remain unchanged no matter what facts arise: It befits to us to make decisions with reference to our normative goals - particularly when we cannot be completely sure of possible outcomes. We need more than ever a discussion on useful long-term models and effects of our actions, equally for towns and regions within Europe in the process of unification. This is also a form of bridge building, beyond steel and concrete, with at least the same consequences for integration as the icons of technical engineering, which, by bridging separations, enable understanding and change.

1968 y post scriptum

The author, a well know theorist and activist of the civil rights movement and the movement against the Vietnam War, published the first part of this article in 1968. There, he analyses the emergence of the New Left in the United States –and its global connection– through the social structure, the actors’ class background and their cultural configuration to account for the aspirations and limits that accompanied the middle class youth that lead this movement. The dilemmas that emerged between the racial, ethnic, social and economic axes that defined the actors framed the diverse social movements and throw light on the promises, scope and weaknesses that characterized them. In the post scriptum, written explicitly for the Revista Mexicana de Ciencias Políticas y Sociales 50 years later with a great analytical and existential wisdom, the author inspects the way in which class profile, radicalization and separatism led to an isolation of the New Left from the natural support basis it should have reached. It evaluates the consequences of its integration either to the Old Left or to the system, as it manifests in the turn towards right that progressive and democratic sectors had in the United States. Furthermore, he underlines the way it influenced the inequality and vulnerability that prevails among the social class –the “precateriat”– the left should have represented, and projects itself in the current situation and in Trumpism. Without a doubt, the depth, realism and theoretical and practical vision of Michael Walzer have turned him into one of the representative figures of political theory. JBL
