Was Dali's Wife Malign-Or Misunderstood
An article promoting ""Gala Salvador Dali: A Room of One's Own"" at the Museo Nacional d'Arte de Catalunya. The argument that Gala was not the nasty, mone-hungry woman she was painted to be, but instead, something more benign is presented by Curator, Estrella de Diego. The author provides a brief background of Gala, and multiple examples of strong, negative opinions people had about her

Rewolucja oczami Wandei
Revolution seen through the eyes of VendéeThis paper aims at reviewing a publication entitled "The Franco-French Genocide. Vendée – the Department of Vengeance" by Reynald Secher. The book touches on the issue of fights between the Republicans and peasants opposing the regime of the revolutionaries. This event’s history has been hushed up. Moreover, it has effectively been removed from the national narrative. Reynald Secher propagates the process of reminding us of those facts. In this review, information on the fights will be contrasted with theories presented by other historians in order to make the reader aware of the whole process’s complexity and of many persistent inaccuracies.Materials collected by the author will be subjected to our analysis. Due to the reconstruction of events by eye-witnesses, previously an underestimated but abundant source of knowledge, the author has learned the truth about the acts of the revolutionary heroes. In Secher's work, the accuracy with which he presents all the issues becomes equally important.Special attention should be paid to the very word “genocide” and its associations. Indeed, the work is not focused on carnage. Instead, it plays a part both as a reminder that carnage did take place, and a presentation of reasons for its occurrence. Szczególną uwagę należy przyłożyć do samego słowa „ludobójstwo” i konotacji z nim związanych. Sednem pracy nie jest bowiem przedstawienie rzezi, ale przypomnienie, że miała ona miejsce i zaprezentowanie powodów jej zaistnienia

Aboriginal customary law ::a source of common law title to land /
"This book develops an alternative approach to conventional Aboriginal title doctrine. It explains that aboriginal customary law can be a source of common law title to land in former British colonies, whether they were acquired by settlement or by conquest or cession from another colonising power. The doctrine of Common Law Aboriginal Customary Title provides a coherent approach to the source, content, proof and protection of Aboriginal land rights which overcomes problems arising from the law as currently understood and leads to more just results. The doctrine's applicability in Australia, Canada and South Africa is specifically demonstrated. While the jurisprudential underpinnings for the doctrine are consistent with fundamental common law principles, the author explains that the Australian High Court's decision in Mabo provides a broader basis for the doctrine: a broader basis which is consistent with a re-evaluation of case-law from former British colonies in Africa, as well as from the United States, New Zealand and Canada. In this context, the book proffers a reconceptualisation of the Crown's title to land in former colonies and a reassessment of conventional doctrines, including the doctrine of tenure and the doctrine of continuity."--Bloomsbury Publishing

Epigenome_Datasets
Holstein embryos were produced in vitro (IVP, n=4) or in vivo (by ovarian superstimulation followed by AI; MOET, n=4) and transferred to synchronized recipients. Pregnancies were monitored until delivery. Male calves were maintained in similar conditions during the postnatal period until euthanasia at around 100 days of age.
The following datasets correspond to the epigenomic modifications in the hypothalamus, pituitary, testicles, adrenals, liver, and muscle from IVP and MOET calves.
The WGBS clean reads were aligned to the bovine reference genome (bosTau 9) using the Bismark Bisulfite Read Marker (v 0.22.3). The percent of methylated cytosines was calculated as the number of methylated cytosines/total number of cytosines x 100. Cytosines were annotated with the nearest (no specific cut-off) transcription start site (TSS) and with gene structures (promoter, exon, intron, CpG islands or shores) through Genomation (Bioconductor/R). Promoters and CpG shore were defined as ± 1000 bp and ± 2000 bp of the TSS and CpG islands, respectively.

The impact of 5 consecutive days of ischemic preconditioning on running performance in hypoxia
Brief periods (~ 5 min) of occlusion followed by reperfusion, otherwise known as ischemic preconditioning (IPC), induce local effects that protect the myocardium from ischemic injury (Murry, Jennings & Reimer, 1986). IPC has also been show to improve exercise performance (Bailey et al., 2012; Barbosa et al., 2015; Crisafulli et al., 2011; de Groot, Thijssen, Sanchez, Ellenkamp & Hopman, 2010; Foster, Giri, Rogers, Larson & Anholm, 2014; Jean-St-Michel et al., 2011; Kjeld, Rasmussen, Jattu, Nielsen & Secher, 2013). The proposed mechanisms are thought to be attributed to the vasculature, triggering an increase in blood flow (Shimizu, Konstantinova, Kharbanda, Cheung & Redington, 2007) and oxygen delivery to the working muscles (Saito, Komiyama, Aramoto, Miyata & Shigematsu, 2004). A natural physiological response to altitude exposure (≥ 1500 m) is hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), which reduces blood flow and oxygen delivery to the exercising muscles (Wyatt, 2014). Therefore, it appears possible that IPC may enhance performance in hypoxia however, this has not been found after a single bout of IPC (Foster, Westerdahl, Foster, Hsu & Anholm, 2011 & Hittinger et al., 2015). Multiple bouts of IPC significantly increase flow mediated dilution (FMD) (Jones et al., 2014 & Jones et al., 2015), and thus chronic IPC may enhance performance in hypoxia
Variants in ADCY5 and near CCNL1 are associated with fetal growth and birth weight
To identify genetic variants associated with birth weight, we meta-analyzed six genome-wide association (GWA) studies (n = 10,623 Europeans from pregnancy/birth cohorts) and followed up two lead signals in 13 replication studies (n = 27,591). rs900400 near LEKR1 and CCNL1 (P = 2 x 10(-35)) and rs9883204 in ADCY5 (P = 7 x 10(-15)) were robustly associated with birth weight. Correlated SNPs in ADCY5 were recently implicated in regulation of glucose levels and susceptibility to type 2 diabetes, providing evidence that the well-described association between lower birth weight and subsequent type 2 diabetes has a genetic component, distinct from the proposed role of programming by maternal nutrition. Using data from both SNPs, we found that the 9% of Europeans carrying four birth weight-lowering alleles were, on average, 113 g (95% CI 89-137 g) lighter at birth than the 24% with zero or one alleles (P(trend) = 7 x 10(-30)). The impact on birth weight is similar to that of a mother smoking 4-5 cigarettes per day in the third trimester of pregnancy
The effect of fluid acceleration on sediment transport in the surf zone
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering, February 2007.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Includes bibliographical references (p. 181-184).The surf zone is defined by highly non-linear, breaking waves that have very different acceleration signatures beneath their respective crests and troughs. The consequences of this dissimilarity on sediment transport is not fully understood. This thesis develops methodologies to predict sediment transport under these asymmetric, skewed waves. Two different transport mechanisms are considered: bedload transport and "subsurface" transport. The potential for subsurface transport was first realized by Madsen (1974) who found that the large pressure gradient beneath a breaking wave was sufficient to drive a substantial porous-media flow, adequate to create a soil-mechanics type failure extending several centimeters into a sandy sediment bed. The theoretical model of Madsen (1974) is extended to obtain estimates of subsurface transport by subdividing the sediment in failure into distinct, kinematically admissible slip circles. An equation governing the rotation of each slip circle is developed, yielding the subsurface sediment's horizontal movement as a function of depth. By integration, subsurface transport can predicted. In addition, a method is developed for estimating bedload transport under breaking waves, accounting for the enhanced shear stress beneath the wave's crest. An existing bedload formula is used as the foundation for this predictive model.(cont.) The validity of the two predictive models is substantiated by experiments conducted in a laboratory wave flume. Breaking waves are passed over lightweight, plastic beads representive of uncohesive sediment. The surficial and subsurface transport is experimentally measured. Using velocity records from the laboratory waves, the theoretical models are used to make predictions of each type of transport. Both models produce good agreement with experimental observations. Finally, laboratory wave data from Madsen (1974) are scaled to the the size of waves typical of the surf zone. Using parameters characteristic of sand, the two models predict a subsurface transport of the same order as bedload transport for typical wave and sediment parameters. Furthermore, subsurface transport is found to be proportional to the characteristic length scale of the wave squared, while bedload transport is proportional to the length scale to the power of 1.5.by William McKinney Durham.S.M
