    All-optical TDM data demultiplexing at 80 Gbit/s with significant timing jitter tolerance using a fiber Bragg grating based rectangular pulse switching technology

    We demonstrate the use of fiber Bragg grating based pulse-shaping technology to provide timing jitter tolerant data demultiplexing in an 80 Gb/s all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) system. Error-free demultiplexing operation is achieved with ~6 ps timing jitter tolerance using superstructured fiber Bragg grating based 1.7 ps soliton to 10 ps rectangular pulse conversion at the switching pulse input to a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) demultiplexer comprising highly nonlinear dispersion shifted fiber (HNLF). A 2-dB power-penalty improvement is obtained compared to demultiplexing without the pulse-shaping grating. <br/

    Descent and cyclotomic redshift for chromatically localized algebraic K-theory

    We prove that T(n+1)T(n+1)-localized algebraic KK-theory satisfies descent for ππ-finite pp-group actions on stable \infty-categories of chromatic height up to nn, extending a result of Clausen-Mathew-Naumann-Noel for finite pp-groups. Using this, we show that it sends T(n)T(n)-local Galois extensions to T(n+1)T(n+1)-local Galois extensions. Furthermore, we show that it sends cyclotomic extensions of height nn to cyclotomic extensions of height n+1n+1, extending a result of Bhatt-Clausen-Mathew for n=0n=0. As a consequence, we deduce that K(n+1)K(n+1)-localized KK-theory satisfies hyperdescent along the cyclotomic tower of any T(n)T(n)-local ring.     Temporal histories of Cordilleran continental arcs: Testing models for magmatic episodicity

    Magmatic activity in continental arcs is known to vary in a non-steady statemanner, the mechanisms for which are a matter of ongoing discussion. Ofparticular importance is the question to what extent episodic magmatism incontinental arcs is governed by external factors (e.g., plate motions) and internal factors (e.g., feedback processes in the upper plate). In order to test existing models for magmatic episodicity, which are mostly based on temporally and spatially limited records, this study uses large datasets of geochronological, geochemical, and plate kinematic data to document the Paleozoic to Mesozoic development of the Cordilleran orogen in eight transects from British Colombia to Patagonia. The temporal distribution of U/Pb bedrock and detrital zircon ages, used as a proxy for timing of magmatic accretion, shows that some minima and maxima are nearly synchronous for thousands of km along the arc. Some age patterns are characterized by a periodicity of 50?80 Ma, suggesting a cyclic controlling mechanism. Other magmatic lulls or flare-ups find no equivalent in adjacent sectors, indicating that either discrete events or variable lag times also may be important in governing magmatic activity in continental arcs. Magma composition in Mexico, the Peninsular Ranges, and the Sierra Nevada varies episodically and proportionally with the temporal record of arc activity. During flare-up events, there is an increase in Sm/Yb, indicating deeper melting, and a decrease in εNdi, suggesting a higher degree of crustal assimilation. Geochemical scatter also increases during the initiation of flare-up events. Plate kinematic data provide a means of evaluating mantle heat input. The correlation between plate convergence rate and magmatic accretion varies for each sector, suggesting that different flare-ups or lulls likely reflect variable combinations of processes.Fil: Kirsch, Moritz. Platynereis dumerilii is a marine annelid that has been used to study germline development and gametogenesis. P. dumerilii has germ cell clusters found across the body in the juvenile worms, and the clusters eventually form the gametes. Like other segmented worms, P. dumerilii grows by adding new segments at its posterior end. The number of segments reflect the growth state of the worms and therefore is a useful and measurable growth state metric to study the growth-reproduction crosstalk. To understand how growth correlates with progression of gametogenesis, we investigated germline development across several developmental stages. We discovered a distinct transition period when worms increase the number of germline clusters at a particular segment number threshold. Additionally, we found that keeping worms short in segment number, by manipulating environmental conditions or via amputations, supported a segment number threshold requirement for germline development. Finally, we asked if these clusters in P. dumerilii play a role in regeneration (as similar free-roaming cells are observed in Hydra and planarian regeneration) and found that the clusters were not required for regeneration in P. dumerilii, suggesting a strictly germline nature.     This paper introduces the concept of Construction Physics as a more comprehensive way of understanding the construction process from a flow perspective. It establishes a preliminary definition of the term and investigates briefly the present knowledge, flow models and methods for their management. From this it argues that the state of the art does not fully cover the whole process and proposes a holistic view of the flow of all prerequisites feeding the process. It introduces the key term Critical Flow and concludes by recommending areas that should be investigated as a joint IGLC research, development and testing programme
