Imagining the Worst: Ladislav Fuks' Contributions to Holocaust Fiction

    No full text
Ladislav Fuks' works are under-recognized in English-speaking academic discourse. He is a valuable contributor not only to the Holocaust Literature genre, but also to film and literature in general. His two English-translated works, Mr. Theodore Mundstock and The Cremator, as well as the film adaptation of The Cremator, examine the role imagination can play in art that addresses atrocity, allowing for a heightened subjective impact on the audience. I critically and comparatively examine Fuks' work to establish his value to literature and Holocaust art. In the first chapter, I frame my argument with questions of art's abilities to represent atrocity and provide relevant background information relating to Fuks' and his experience in wartime Prague. In Chapter Two, I closely read Mr. Theodore Mundstock, concentrating specifically on Fuks' use of metaphor, presentation of incredulity, and commentary on the imagination's capabilities in confronting terror. Chapter Three compares Mr. Theodore Mundstock to the "Momik" section of David Grossman's See Under: Love, focusing on similarities between the title characters. Chapter Four examines Fuks' use of the grotesque in The Cremator and its film adaptation. Chapter Five compares Fuks' works to Aharon Appelfeld's novel Badenheim 1939, emphasizing each author's reliance on the audience's retrospective prescience, which provides a significant psychological impact and avoids contributing to the over-saturation of Holocaust information on the public. I conclude that Fuks should be more highly regarded and widely recognized both academically and in popular culture, as he exhibits similar features as other, more celebrated Holocaust writers, and his innovative contributions defend the value of literature in representing atrocity.Master of Art

Stylization procedures in texts by Ladislav Fuks

    No full text
This thesis deals with the stylization procedures used in the belletristic and journalistic texts written by Ladislav Fuks. The aim of the thesis is to define and demonstrate the basic distinctive methods and procedures such as repetition, intertextuality, ambiguity and mystification, ambivalence and autostylization. This thesis follows the methods mentioned above in characteristic exposures and transformations and examines the diversity of functions these methods fulfil in several texts of different nature. Furthermore, this thesis occupies with the relationship between these methods and author`s artistic stylization as well as to what extent he can be cogitated. This thesis is directed to defining the uniqueness of Fuks`s writing method which offers a variety of reading approaches. It allows to look at Fuks`s writing from different angles and observe the intensity of author`s personal attitudes projecting into his texts. Keywords Ladislav Fuks, stylization, stylization procedures, deliberateness, unpremeditation, repetition, intertextuality, ambiguity and mystification, ambivalence, autostylization, variation(s), memor

Walter Benjamin and Aby Warburg: from the dialectical image to the spectral image. Looking at history as a physicist or about how to register the survivals [Nachleben] and the energetic life [Lebensenergie] of the past

    No full text
In the preparatory notes to the theses On the Concept of History [1940] (2009), Walter Benjamin points out that the historical materialist must, in traversing the "structure of history", carry out a "spectral analysis" [Spektralanalyse]. Whatever familiarity Benjamin may have had with the physical method of spectral analysis, we start from here to develop a central theme, which is that of the epistemology of the image for a model of history already dialectised with nature, in this case, that of Walter Benjamin and Aby Warburg. Not only the notion of image and dialectical image present in the authors is important, but also that which is contained and transmitted in the image, which comes from past temporalities. This is why we address the idea of survival [Nachleben] in both authors, and how this is encoded, in Warburg's thought, in the idea of an energetic life and in the notions of dynamogram, engram and memory. We seek to show that the dialectisation between history and nature enables us to grasp a sphere of the objectual that is independent of man, that is,the energy or force that is contained within an image, hence the interest of taking the physicist's view of history.Fil: Fuks, Ludmila. Beautiful Majorana Higgses at colliders

    No full text
We investigate a novel collider signature within the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, featuring a Higgs sector composed of a bi-doublet and two triplets. Our study focuses on a region of the parameter space where the SU(2)R charged gauge boson WR lies in the multi-TeV regime (3–100 TeV) and the additional Higgs states play a significant role. In this scenario, a heavy neutral Higgs boson ∆ with a dominant SU(2)R triplet component can be produced in association with either a Standard Model Higgs boson or a massive weak boson. The subsequent decay of the heavy Higgs into Majorana neutrinos N results in displaced lepton signatures, providing a striking manifestation of lepton number violation. Additionally, we explore how the production of b-jets in these processes can enhance hadron-collider sensitivity to such signals. A particularly compelling channel, pp→bb ̄NN, offers the exciting possibility of simultaneously probing the spontaneous mass origin of both Dirac fermions and Majorana states. Based on an optimised event selection strategy and state-of-the-art Monte Carlo simulations, we outline the expected reach at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Our findings demonstrate that this channel probes a region of parameter space where the neutral Higgs triplet and heavy neutrino masses are relatively light (m∆ ≲ 250 GeV, mN ≲ 80 GeV), indirectly constraining the WR boson to the deep multi-TeV domain, with sensitivity extending up to 70–80 TeV, effectively turning the LHC into a precision machine

A novel search strategy for right-handed charged gauge bosons at the Large Hadron Collider

    No full text
We explore the potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in detecting a signal originating from the production of a heavy SU(2)R charged gauge boson that then decays into a top-bottom quark pair via the mediation of a right-handed neutrino, pp→WR→NRℓ→(ℓ′tb)ℓ. Such a channel, that we study in the context of the minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model, contrasts with conventional smoking-gun signatures targeted experimentally and phenomenologically in which only light quarks are involved. We propose a selection strategy aimed at extracting such a top-bottom signal and we estimate the resulting sensitivity of the LHC to the model. Our results demonstrate the potential impact of such a search and we therefore urge the experimental collaborations to carry out a similar analysis in the light of present and future data

The aim of this diploma theses is to find philosophical, religious and ideological motifs in the work of Ladislav Fuks and subsequently interpret their origin, intertextuality and meaning in the text. The emphasis is put on proving the semantic functionality in the story. For our research, we have selected following works: Mr. Theodore Mundstock, The Cremator, and Addressing from the Darkness. We will study philosophical and theological literature, as well as materials from the archives and from the estate of Ladislav Fuks in order to base all the findings on the biographical author, too. The thesis is divided into five chapters. In the first chapter we deal with basic literary characteristics of the selected books and their literary reception. The second chapter discusses Ladislav Fuks' relationship to philosophy, being anchored in both his friends' testimonies and the archival research of his estate. The third chapter is the most important and the most comprehensive one since it deals with the interpretation of philosophical motifs in each of the selected books. In the fourth chapter we compare individual philosophical motifs from different works with each other. We summarize the findings at the end of the theses

Profane Metaphysics : Uses of Leibniz and Héring in Walter Benjamin's Epistemology

    No full text
Fil: Alvarez Gavela, Ariadna.
