The effect of ageostrophy on the stability of thin oceanic vortices
This paper examines the stability of vortices in a two-layer ocean on the f-plane. The mean depth ¯h1 of the upper layer is assumed to be much smaller than the depth ¯h2 of the lower layer. Using the primitive equations, we derive an asymptotic criterion for baroclinic instability of compensated (i.e. confined to the upper layer) vortices. Surprisingly, it coincides exactly with a similar criterion derived from the quasigeostrophic equations [Benilov, E.S., 2003. Instability of quasigeostrophic vortices in a two-layer ocean with thin upper layer. J. Fluid Mech. 475, 303–331]. Thus, to leading order in ¯h1 / ¯h2, ageostrophy does not affect the stability properties of thin compensated vortices. As a result, whether a vortex is stable or not, depends on its shape, not amplitude (although the growth rate of an unstable vortex does depend on its amplitude)
Steady rimming flows with surface tension
We examine steady flows of a thin film of viscous fluid on the inside of a cylinder with horizontal axis, rotating about this axis. If the amount of fluid in the cylinder is sufficiently small, all of it is entrained by rotation and the film is distributed more or less evenly. For medium amounts, the fluid accumulates on the ‘rising’ side of the cylinder and, for large ones, pools at the cylinder’s bottom. The paper examines rimming flows with a pool affected by weak surface tension. Using the lubrication approximation and the method of matched asymptotics, we find a solution describing the pool, the ‘outer’ region, and two transitional regions, one of which includes a variable (depending on the small parameter) number of asymptotic zones
On the stability of large-amplitude geostrophic flows in a 2-layer fluid: the case of 'strong' beta-effect
This paper examines the stability of two-layer geostrophic flows with large displacement of the interface and strong /7-effect. Attention is focused on flows with non-monotonic interface profiles which are not covered by the Rayleigh-style stability theorems proved by Benilov (1992a, b) and Benilov&Cushman-Roisin (1994). For such flows the coefficient of the highest derivative in the corresponding boundary-value problem vanishes at the point where the depth profile has an extremum. Although this singularity is similar to a critical level, it cannot be regularized by the simplistic introduction of infinitesimal viscosity through the assumption that the phase speed of the disturbance is complex. In order to regularize the singularity properly, one should consider the problem within the framework of the original ageostrophic viscous equations and, having obtained the boundary-value problem for harmonic disturbance, take the limit Rossby number→0, viscosity →0. The results obtained analytically and (for special cases) numerically indicate that the stability of flows with non-monotonic profiles strongly depends on the depth of the upper layer. If the upper layer is ‘thick’ (i.e. if the average depth H1 of the upper layer is of the order of the total depth of the fluid H0), the stability boundary-value problem does not have any solutions at all, which means stability (however, this stability is structurally unstable, and the flow, generally speaking, can be made weakly unstable by any small effect such as external forcing, viscosity, or ageostrophic corrections). In the case of ‘thin’ upper layer (H/H0 < Ro), the order of the singularity changes and all non-monotonic flows are unstable regardless of their profiles. It is also demonstrated that thin-upper-layer flows do not have to be non-monotonic to be unstable: if U — /3RI (where u is the zonal velocity, β is the β-parameter, and R0is the deformation radius) changes sign somewhere in the flow, the stability boundary-value problem has another singular point which leads to instability. © 1995, Cambridge University Press. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
