Electrochemotherapy of head and neck cancer

    No full text
In the head and neck area, electrochemotherapy (ECT) is currently implemented for the treatment of recurrent and/or metastatic cutaneous, subcutaneous, mucosal, or deep-seated tumors of any kind of histology. However, its particular efficiency in the treatment of small, primary, and treatment-naïve tumors has already been demonstrated. Nevertheless, ECT has different effectiveness in tumors of various histotypes. Basal cell carcinomas proved to be a most responsive tumor with almost 100% objective response rate and excellent cosmetic results without any functional impairment of treated sites. For the treatment of deep-seated tumors in the head and neck region, long single needle electrodes are used. These electrodes can be placed in various patterns with the aim to cover large and irregular-shaped tumors, hidden under the visible surface. Moreover, coupling treatment planning and navigation system enables precise insertion of long, single needle electrodes into deep-seated tumors of the head and neck region. Further developments in the application of ECT in the head and neck cancers are orientated to reduced dose of bleomycin in elderly patients and combining ECT with immunotherapy and/or immunogene electrotransfer

COVID-19: what if the brain had a role in causing the deaths?

    No full text
In the last few weeks Italy first, and then several other countries across the world, have been swept up by the deadly wave of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), which causes the illness named COVID-19, from the acronym CO (corona) VI (virus) D (disease) and 19 (year of the virus identification). The medical community is working day and night to assist affected people and experts in communicable diseases are striving in multiple ways to understand the progression of events leading to the lethal respiratory syndrome

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Low-Grade Papillary Schneiderian Carcinoma: Report of a Case with Molecular Characterization

In 2015, Lewis et al. first described low-grade papillary Scheneiderian carcinoma (LGPSC) of the sinonasal tract. Their case resembled a sinonasal papilloma clinically and histopathologically; however, invasion and metastasis resulted in the death of the patient despite absence of malignant cytologic features. Additional reports established LGPSC as a distinct entity and characterized its immunohistochemical profile. Diffuse expression of low molecular weight cytokeratins, positivity for p16 and p53 in at least 50% of cells, a high Ki-67 index, and absence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-DNA was observed across all reported cases. We report an additional case of LGPSC and describe the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical features. In contrast to sinonasal papillomas, the case was negative for HPV-DNA and showed no mutations in the EGFR and KRAS hotspot regions

[Surgical revision of the lateral nasal wall].

The purpose of rhinosinus revision through endoscopic surgery is to resolve recurrent, residual pathologies in patients with drug-resistant symptoms and to prevent ocular and endocranial complications. Surgical revision proves quite complex because of the destruction of the anatomical structures. More over the presence of tougher scare tissue which bleeds easily increases the risk of iatrogenous complications. Axial and coronal-projection tomography without contrast medium must be performed prior to surgery. Endonasal orientation is ensured by six main reference points. Three of these points--nasal septum, upper edge of the choana and upper edge of the nasolacrymal duct--are nearly always present while the others may or may not be, depending on what sort surgery has been performed. The present work gives the guidelines for a correct approach to patients who have undergone many previous procedures

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
